Last week, I had a new Nest thermostat installed. Since the old thermostat was a different shape/size, the hole and paint job was showing with the nest installed directly. The system came with a white rectangle, but the HVAC guy told me they sold other faceplates and that they were easy to install myself. He put the white one on temporarily. I couldn't decide based on the Amazon pictures, so I bought three faceplates (all from this item) to see in person. I ended up keeping the Matte Dark Gray. It looks so much nicer on my wall. WARNING IF YOU'VE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE... I wish he had told me that if the wires touched, it would cause a fuse to blow in the HVAC system. Since I had to straighten the wires to get them through the old faceplate and back through the new one, they touched. It was after I called the HVAC company asking for help when the Nest wouldn't turn back on that I learned this. He said I should have turned the HVAC's power off before changing the plate. They're coming out to replace the fuse. I'm lucky that I had a service contract so they won't charge me for the new fuse. I took the star off because if it had come with directions or an install guide, I would have known about turning the power off first. ... show more

    • Better than Lyric - I Own Both

I am now an owner of both the Honeywell product and Nest, one in one house and one in the other (or I should say three in each). I can honestly say the Nest is far more technologically advanced and has a friendly user interface. Both are not as simple to install as they say, particularly if you don't have a C wire (so I used Add-a-wire to do so) but I do like the fact that the Nest battery is rechargeable (on its own with C wire) vs the Lyric which takes a lithium ion battery which I had to replace every four - six months (a pain for a second home when you are not there). Nest is also more attractive of a product for user. I also found customer service (which I needed) to be excellent. The beauty of competition is that it will force Honeywell to improve it's Lyric product, which is now obviously outdated. Before I convert my second house to Nest, I am standing by to see what Honeywell does. It's shocking to me that a company the size and stature of Honeywell has fallen behind more of an entrepreneurial company like Nest (but then again, maybe I'm not surprised) ... show more

Fits the Nest Gen 3 perfectly! Looks way better than the included rectangular plate that comes included with the Nest. All the holes line up perfectly. The only downside is that since it's chrome, fingerprints show up regularly. But that's not the fault of this product. Included a pic of it after installation. My wife jokingly says it looks like a shower fixture. I think it looks great! ... show more

My Furnace does not have a C wire or a "power wire", technically. I only had 3 wires. W, B, G. This had me stumped as the Nest requires a "power wire" to stay charged. My old thermostat ran off of batteries, so wasn't ever needed. Upon several hours of frustration and googling. I finally went and looked at my 100 year old control board and noticed, the diagram on it listed, R W B. I went and grabbed my multi-meter and tested the wires. the "R" wire didn't have much voltage but it was significantly greater than the others. Wired that one to the RH slot and WOOOO! The nest recognized the power source and further setup was extremely easy. This thermostat is definitely fancy and easy to use, lots of features to utilize and even reports how you are using it. Love the feature that it knows you are away from home, Will definitely help me save money and pay for itself. ... show more

    • It is smart maybe too smart

First off I’m an electrician. I installed this in about 10 minutes including a separately bought wall mount. They include one though that’s actually pretty nice. This thermostat has saved us a lot of unnecessary heat usage. This thermostat learns what you set things to and gives you detailed ways to save more energy and money by setting it at different temps. My two favorite things though are I set it so when you walk by it tells you the current temp outside and gives you the forecast! I also love it learns what you like and it goes to that temp. Here’s a beware make sure you don’t have someone especially early on accidentally do something you wouldn’t normally do. It may remember that and you make come back to your house set at 85! I’ve heard of that story once because their kid accidentally touched the thermostat. Enjoy it’s actually cool looking and fun to set just be careful and make sure you turn off the power because low voltage cause still short out and blow a fuse in the furnace. ... show more

I hated the default rectangular white wall plate that came with my Nest Thermostat and thought this would be a cheap way to replace it. It really is just a circular piece of thin plastic but in my opinion it looks much better and is worth the extra cost. The metal support for my thermostat does not sit flush with my wall and sticks out a bit. A lot of the other wall plates requires a completely flat surface which would not have worked for me. This cover has just enough of a buffer to still sit flush with my wall (similar amount of space as the default Nest wall plate) even with the metal support sticking out a bit. I also purchased the Elago grip cover to change the color of the ring around the thermostat. The two items fit together along with the thermostat perfectly. ... show more

My previous thermostat was a square box so I was a little worried that this wasn't going to be big enough but it is exactly big enough to cover the previous markings on the wall. My previous one didn't have a whole lot more real-estate space than my nest. If you previous thermostat is a lot bigger than the Nest, this might not work for you. Good quality plastic. Good enough for this purpose. I didn't try but you could probably bend it if you tried but perfect for it's purpose. Was easy to install. It sits behind the Nest base during install so either install them at the same time or be aware that you will have to remove the Nest to install it. I got this because my neighbor has the Nest and used the rectangle cover that comes in the box. I can't handle the different shapes so I figured Amazon has to have something that is also circular.
