Description

Take a deep dive into the weedy waters of professional bass fishing with veteran fishing reporter Rob Newell, who has covered the big leagues of bass fishing for more than 30 years. Retracing the sport’s progression from the 1980s to the present day, Newell tries to answer the question: What happened to the burgeoning niche sport poised to become America’s next major-league sporting sensation? Through his keen insights and witty commentary, Newell uncovers a series of deepening potholes that have created a contentious cratering of professional bass fishing in the modern era. Once bolstered by extensive corporate sponsors and $1 million tournament payouts, the sport has now morphed into a massive marketing machine of egos and logos, all scrambling for the same dollar. Is professional fishing a pastime past its prime? Whether you are a hardcore fan of competitive bass fishing or have wondered how the quirky tournament industry works, Newell’s memoir Egos, Logos and Bass Prose is a must-read. Due to the in-depth nature of this subject, it does require some basic background knowledge about the sport of professional bass fishing to enjoy fully. Read more

  • Good read for those that love bass fishing...
Format: Paperback
Yep, we lived it! See I also worked in the industry from 2008 until 2020. I saw everything Rob spoke about first hand. Some have asked do I miss it, because I left the industry in 2020. The fact is, YES I do but, I knew mergers were happening and I did not want to continue living that way and not knowing where my pay check was coming next. Now the facts, this is an extremely powerful story about professional fishing circuits and the fishing industry. If someone wants to fish professionally now or in the future you should read this and get prepared. Rob's involvement is the industry was at the top level and YES, he saw alot of what was going on every day. This is Rob's first book, but he had complete control of the story and his style is tops. This guy is legit and he has shared some great stories from his past and prepares us for what is to come. Read it and pass it on to someone who loves bass fishing... ... show more

  • The truth all aspiring anglers need to hear about a ONCE great industry!
Format: Paperback
Rob Newell is such an incredible talent and writer. He has put into words what the world needs to know about the bass fishing industry past, current, and to come without naming names, finding fault, trying to ruin reputations. He like all of us has flaws, but his biggest is his love and passion for this industry, the anglers, and the fans. Never has there been such an accomplished writer who has spent the time on the water with the anglers as Rob, not anyone! He is more than qualified to share his opinions and present the facts of the history of the industry, the current trajectory of the industry, the continued miss management of the leagues, anglers not having the ability to form a self governing union to represent their interest (this has been and will continue to be a reason why the pinnacle has long since past). Early in his book he does and incredible job comparing payouts of 2007 to modern payouts, quickly one can see that the only thing that has went up is the price to play while the rewards have went down substantially. He coins a phrase from Ott DeFoe and call this a spendustry. I will go with that but I also think we can label this industry a glorified hobby, definitely not a “sport”. There is no professional sport that from 1997 (I am picking a year that fishing started to explode) to current in which its athletes make the same today or even less as they did in 97’. True sports have grown in what their athletes make from salaries, bonuses, appearances etc.. True sports have one league, one governing body, one sanctioning body that represents player's, media and marketing machines that build player’s and league brands. True sports have well defined rules, transparency of those rules, and a standardized system for what happens to athletes who break them. When true professional leagues change their rules there is a lot of thought put into these changes, these changes are easy to keep up with and understand by fans. Rob covers this and so much more in his book Egos, Logos, & Fishing Prose. This is a must read for every high school and college angler and their parents. Rob will present the facts of why this one group is now spending the money to keep this industry afloat. I will never tell a young man or women’s not to chase their dream just understand if their dream is to be a part of this industry it is Not what it was in its golden days. I got to live those days with many other anglers and guys like Rob and we all know what is left is a remnant of the past that now consist of three leagues. One league you could say at times is dysfunctional and ran by a family group who know very little about bass fishing thus the great exit, another league that is ran by a one person who has way too many conflicts of interest (sadly this started out as an angler run league, but one voice wanted his way so he kept making the “room” smaller until he had everyone in the “room” agreeing with his way—some would call this a dictator), a third league who is being run the right way by listening to their customers (the anglers), but unfortunately for this league there are two others in this game as well. As we saw with the mass exodus B.A.S.S. has the brand recognition, 500,000 subscribers to their magazine, second to none digital footprint, and the Classic. In their model the brand will always be bigger than the anglers and that’s how they survived when the majority of their anglers left for the Bass Pro Tour. This league will be run by management knowing that no matter who the anglers are the brand will continue to exist. It will at times make it appear that anglers have a voice that guide the tournaments it conducts, that will be short lived ending with anglers realizing their voice really doesn't matter. Major League Fishing thought if it stripped BASS of its stars it would go out of business. Turns out that was a bad bet and the entire industry is now suffering the consequences, I will be the first to confess that when the mass exodus happened I bought into the fact for the first time in a long time this could be better for the anglers, wrong again. At MLF there was two years of no entry fees and over 12.5 million in payout, but it was unsustainable model that management had created and their billionaire partner put a cap on the spending. Thus the model of pay to play was re-implemented. While the majority of the superstars in the sport where at MLF most of them to took pay-cuts from their sponsors because the marketing machine of MLF did not match where they left. The third league time will tell if it can survive and if there is any marketing dollars left to support it. Gone are the days of big non-endemic sponsors supporting this industry so this third league will need to find a “niche” that separates itself from the other two leagues. If you are an aspiring angler and want this to be a career read this book before starting down that path—please! If you have been at it a while and wondering if this industry can get back to its glory days read this book please! If you are a multi-billionaire and are looking for your next big “it” and are considering this industry this book is the start of your blueprint—caution what you are attempting has been tried several times and failed. If you are in the production business and you want to build dreams and make profits for your company this is the perfect shell game for you because over the years I feel they are the only ones who have made life changing money. I got to live with Rob and others through some golden era’s of bass fishing and I will never tell someone to not pursue their dream, I did and it was good to me and my family in-spite of all the mismanagement along the way. However, never has so many things lined up for a downward spiral like we have in this industry right now. Be careful in how you jump in, pick the league that has stood the test of time or the one who has the brightest future and be willing to suffer through a lot more downs than ups! This book is a must read for all in this industry and all need to take a moment and ask ourselves are we going to continue to be a part of the problem or are we going to be a part of the solution that somehow can get this industry back to another golden era? Well done Rob—it exceeded my expectations and my expectations where very high! ... show more

  • Missed opportunity....
Format: Paperback
I had high hopes for this book. I was expecting actual stories of named pros and cases in point examples of what we said goes on. I wanted to hear about individual pros careers and how they handled the hurdles in this sport. There was very little of this. Newell stayed in the "general information zone" which most followers of the sport already know. There was not much delving into the personalities and how some pros struggle with the social media and some do well. Perhaps what he was told and knows firsthand is being held "in confidence" and he's afraid to offend some anglers or betray their confidence, but a lot of this information is still known by the insiders. I wanted to hear about these. It seems the old book "Bass Wars" did a much more thorough job of giving us that inside look, compared to Egos, Logos and Fishing Prose. At least it leaves this opportunity open for another writer to cover. Newell missed his opportunity. ... show more

  • This book is about more than fishing!! Business owners pay attention!!!
Format: Paperback
Whether you are an avid professional fishing fan, a casual fan of the sport or no fan at all, this book will open your eyes to some catastrophic mistakes made by many a business owner. While focusing primarily on the sport of professional fishing and the intricacies of the sport pay close attention to what Rob Newell is telling you. Rob focuses on fishing, but the mistakes are common to many businesses trying to adjust to a moving target and missing that target. Rob points out how the professional fishing leagues have played the shell game with sponsorship monies and the payouts only to alienate those very people who are driving the explosive growth of such league. In effect killing the growth and cutting off their nose to spite their face. At the same time these leagues are so lax in the legislation of the league (operational clarity and vision) that dissention and mutiny are sure to take an insurmountable toll. Read this book with an open mind and receive an education in business management and the proper way to treat those who are the backbone to your success!!! ... show more
