  • How technology has influenced musical styles and vice versa
Format: Kindle
The most enjoyable part is the overview by decades - you'll get to know how the technology developed to serve musical needs and vice versa. The rest of the book is basically a list of manufacturers and their products, which could be used for reference if these were alphabetically ordered. The "40 most popular..." section is dubious for me, as there's no reference to the research methodology or sources. ... show more

  • A deep dive into tone history that’s as fun as it is informative.
Format: Kindle
What I really enjoyed about Effects—Everything You Want to Know All in ONE Book—Book 1 is how it connects the gear to the people and moments that made it matter. It’s not just a list of pedals or specs. The stories behind the effects, the builders, and the artists give real context to why certain sounds became iconic. I also liked how accessible it is. You can jump in anywhere, learn something useful, and suddenly understand why a fuzz, wah, or delay feels the way it does. It made me appreciate both vintage classics and modern gear in a whole new way, and it definitely reignited that curiosity about how sounds are shaped and why they work. ... show more

  • gift for the gearhead in your life!
Format: Kindle
This is an outstanding book! If you play an electric guitar and want to enhance your sound like your musical heroes do, this is the book for you! The author presents an absolutely breathtaking survey of all the 'toys' guitarists have used to thrill listeners through the years, and I can't think of any he's missed. The coolest part of the book are the songs the author cites to give readers vivid examples of these tools in action. For instance, many of the memorable guitar sounds on U2's early albums were courtesy of the Memory Man effects box, which The Edge used extensively. Guitarists will find this book endlessly engaging. It's the ideal gift for the gearhead in your life! ... show more

  • A Treasure Chest for Guitarists and Sound Explorers
Format: Kindle
As someone who has spent years tinkering with pedals, amps, and odd bits of gear, I was blown away by how much ground this book covers. Effects—Everything You Want to Know in ONE Book doesn’t just skim the surface—it digs into the history, the makers, the myths, and even the happy accidents that shaped some of the world’s most iconic sounds. What I liked most is how approachable it is. You don’t need to be a gearhead to appreciate it. The author explains concepts clearly, ties them to real-life examples (from Hendrix’s fuzz tones to modern boutique stompboxes), and sprinkles in stories that make you want to grab your guitar and experiment right away. The mix of history, technical notes, and practical tips makes it just as valuable for beginners as it is for seasoned players. This isn’t just a “how-to” manual—it’s a guide to understanding why effects matter, how they shaped the music we love, and how you can use them to find your own voice. Whether you’re into rock, electronic, or anything in between, this book earns a permanent spot on the shelf. Highly recommended for any musician who’s ever twisted a knob, stomped a switch, or wondered how their heroes got that sound. ... show more

  • Techniques and history of unforgettable guitar sounds
Format: Kindle
When I hear my favorite guitar players, I often wonder how they created certain sounds. Like in “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” that swirling, crying tone Eric Clapton plays always makes me curious about how it was done. If you’ve ever had the same questions about your favorite guitar solo, this book can help you discover answers. The author explains the techniques and connects them to stories about the musicians who first used them. This mix of music, people, history, and even the accidents that created memorable guitar sounds makes this book a really interesting read. The only disappointment with the Kindle version is that the search function isn’t supported, so I couldn’t look up my favorites, I just had to read all pages in order. ... show more

  • A must-have for any guitarist or gearhead
Format: Kindle
This book is a goldmine, a really long goldmine..... for anyone who's ever been curious about effects pedals and how they shape tone. Effects – Everything You Wanted to Know in One Book – Part 1 lives up to the name, covering everything from stompboxes and rack mounts to vocoders and amp modelers. It's well-organized, clear, and packed with helpful info on the history, top makers, and even artists known for specific effects. As someone who has been exploring guitar tone and building a pedalboard, I found this book both educational and inspiring. It doesn't just list gear; it helps you understand how and why different effects work and how to use them creatively. If you're new to the world of effects or even a seasoned player looking to fill in the gaps, this is a solid reference to have on your shelf or, better yet, in your gig bag. ... show more

  • Comprehensive, but zero pictures
Format: Paperback
It is very comprehensive, about effects pedals and other accessories, but not a single illustration in the entire book, not a single image except what's on the cover, so if you're hoping for a look at some cool or legendary pedals, look elsewhere. Also, the "About the Author" is over three pages long, which is about two and a half pages longer than it should be. ... show more

  • An Absolute Must-Have for Guitar Nerds!
Format: Kindle
This book is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Guitar Effects - Part 1 covers everything you could possibly want to know about pedals, stomp boxes, and all the cool gear that makes guitar playing so fun. It’s super easy to read, but also packed with tons of interesting details, like the history behind certain effects, famous artists who use them, and even the companies that make them. As someone who loves messing around with pedals but doesn’t always know the technical stuff, I found this really helpful. It’s not overly complicated but still goes deep enough to keep things interesting. I also appreciated the variety, whether you’re into classic wahs, crazy vocoders, or modern amp modelers, it’s all in here. ... show more
