Love ECR4Kids products, and this bookshelf is no exception. It’s perfect for toddlers and really promotes engagement by encouraging little ones to grab their own books. This is a good display bookshelf and I very am happy with my finished product, but I wanted people to know that they should be prepared for some minor bumps along the way during assembly. The concept of the assembly is pretty straightforward, but the pieces in my box had some minor issues. First of all, one of the pieces didn't have a hole drilled where it was supposed to. No hole at all. My husband is handy and happened to be available at the time, so he drilled the hole for me. (I am not too shabby with power tools and could have drilled it myself, but he has had more experience with woodworking and offered to do it for me while I did something else.) Secondly, the grooves in some pieces weren't cleaned out after they were cut, so there were some pieces of wood that had to be removed so the boards would slide into them. (I didn't notice at first and one board got stuck.) Finally, I had to loosen some of the pre-drilled screws so I could slightly bend the bottom piece to make the final hex screw line up with its hole. All in all, it took a little more effort to assemble this than something from that big Swedish furniture store. However, it wasn't horrible, and the bookshelf looks great and functions well. One thing I was worried about before purchasing was how deep the front panels of the shelves would be. I'm pleased to say that small books are just fine on the shelves, not swallowed up and hidden. I did a lot of research on this type of display bookshelf and finally decided on this one. There is a big range in materials, size and pricing across sellers on Amazon and elsewhere. This one is not the cheapest but in the low to mid range of pricing. The wood is sturdy and good looking. It is not huge, but quite large enough to fit easily as many books as shown in the photo. Each ledge is a few inches deep so you can display either one book or layer the books of varying sizes to increase the number of books that fit on each shelf. My four year old can easily reach all levels of this bookshelf to get and return the books himself. He is 10x more likely to take a book from this bookshelf then a standard bookshelf where he only sees the spine of the book. The box it arrived in was heavy. If you've ever put anything together from Ikea then you will have no problems putting this together. My four year old helped me put it together in about 20 minutes. It does require following the instructions to make sure you don't put any pieces on backwards or the like. This bookshelf is deeper than a typical bookshelf, and holds fewer books than standard bookshelves would hold, but if you want your kid to be more likely to take books from the shelf on their own, then this is the bookcase to get! UPDATE - July 2022 - My son is now nine (almost 10) and he STILL uses this book shelf. We have moved it out of the playroom into his bedroom and he "displays" his school year books and his larger reference books so he can easily find and grab them when he wants to look something up. His books that are on a typical book shelf where he can only see the spine, he has to intentionally go to it and pull books. On this book shelf, the books still catch his eye and his interest regularly. It is also quite durable and still in excellent condition 5 years later! ... show more
