Description

Echo In The Canyon celebrates the explosion of popular music that came out of LA’s Laurel Canyon in the mid-60s as folk went electric and The Byrd's, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas and the Papas gave birth to the California Sound. 1965-67 was a moment when bands came to LA to emulate The Beatles, and Laurel Canyon emerged as a hotbed of creativity and collaboration for a new generation of musicians who would soon put an indelible stamp on the history of American popular music. Featuring Jacob Dylan, the film explores the Laurel Canyon scene via never-before-heard personal details behind the bands and their songs, and how that music continues to inspire today. Echo in the Canyon contains candid conversations and performances with Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys), Michelle Phillips (The Mamas & the Papas), Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield), David Crosby, Roger McGlinn (The Byrd's), their contemporaries Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash, and slightly younger followers Jackson Browne and Tom Petty (in his last film interview), as well as contemporary musicians influenced by their music such as Beck, Fiona Apple, Cat Power, Regina Spector and Norah Jones.

  • The Old Stories Through a Fresh Perspective
First, It's amazing they got all these people together, including the guy who wails over the credits (spoiler alert). I've heard all these stories, I've read Barney Hoskyns, I've been a huge fan of this era of music since I first smoked a joint when I was 15, so of course I really liked this. There are some interesting nuances and stories that are revealed even if you have heard many of the stories before (like Brian taking Roger's speed, never heard that one.) Jakob and Co. did a great job without crossing into the cloying side of nostalgia. And damn he sounds like his dad sometimes (when speaking, he sounds like himself when singing, in his smooth baritone). If you found this you'll probably like it. RIP Tom, we love you. ... show more

  • Worth the price of admission
It has been said that the finest and sharpest swords can only be forged from the hottest of flames and purest of steel. The no-B.S. charisma Crosby, Wilson, Petty, and co. prove this both on camera and off. The loss, the dysfunction, the hours and months of work put in with a fraction of today's technology: They've seen it all by now and aren't afraid of your opinion. All of this, unfortunately, highlights how much less charisma the current cast of musician's have by comparison. It quickly becomes clear that none of them have ever had their noses bloodies in a bar fight. But, can you really blame 'em? They're competing with titans. And, although it helps, you don’t need charisma to be a great songwriter. The live performances sound exceptional and reveal how astounding these songs are with Jakob Dylan at the production helm, esp.”Going’ Back’ by the Byrds. Visually, it becomes a bit of insecure karaoke night with performers relying too heavily on the teleprompter instead of just feeling the vibe of the music. Jade and Norah Jones seem to be the only flames that rise up with the kind of inhibition to burn you into submission. If you just love the vibe of California, this flick is yours. You could turn the sound off and just observe the sophisticated sublime camera work surrender its creativity to you... and still enjoy it on its own merit. Neil Young’s testimony (stock footage notwithstanding) is conspicuously absent. And hey, Tom Petty's last major on-screen appearance, so, Yeah. This golden state adventure manages to capture the real wizardry of the 60's without fetishizing. ... show more

  • The 60’s best!
The Wallflowers Jakob Dylan interviews and organizes the best of old and new in this tribute to the Laurel Canyon music scene in the mid-late 60’s. The Byrds, Mamas and Papas, Beachboys and more performed by some of our contemporary favorites. Great viewing and sound quality. Music available on CD.

  • This is why you don't want to erase our history.
I am a songwriter of 50 years. I traveled across this country to CA in the 70's, because of the music. I grew up idolizing The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, CSNY, Jackson Brown etc. This is an absolutely wonderful production led by Mr. Zimmerman's son, Jakob Dylan. Laurel Canyon had an amazing mix of genius songwriters and performers, that all knew, shared and inspired with one another. This was a great and transformational period in American music. The Beatles inspired folk and rock artists to combine, producing beautiful, melodic, poetic and powerful songs that stand the test of time. All these artists believed The Beatles were the top of the musical hill; and The Beatles thought The Byrds were the coolest band in America. Talk about the original "global village"? This is an outstanding combination of music and interviews that explain a very big piece of Americana... and for me, a very large piece of who I am. And it is dedicated to the memory of Tom Petty. This like American History, is vital to us, and helps to explain what this Great Nation was made of. Highly recommended to all. (including my children;) ... show more
