  • Solid beginner level kit with some nice features.
Size: EDS-2
I wasn't sure whether to give this kit 3 or 4 stars, but I decided on 4 because for the right audience, this is a solid little kit. I have been playing drums for many years, but I ordered this kit for my son and not for me. It comes in one fairly large box that includes everything but surprisingly not that heavy. Once opened, everything was packed in smaller boxes that were labeled with what was inside. This includes the rack, drum pads, cymbal pads, pedals, hardware, drum module, cable snake, stool, accessories, power adapter, sticks and even headphones. The packing was excellent. There was an instruction sheet, but I didn't need to use it. Anyone not familiar with setting an electronic drum kit will likely need to reference the instructions. Everything assembled fairly easily, and it took about 30 minutes to unpack and set everything up. Once you set it up and plug it in you have everything you need to sit right down and start playing. Simply plug in the power and included headphones and you're on your way. Keep in mind that this needs headphones or amplification to hear. There are no speakers. I'm just about 6' tall and even though the kit felt small, I actually could get everything (including the throne) high enough to be fairly comfortable to play. That said, it feels like a kit for kids or maybe smaller teens in terms of size. When I started playing around with the first kit on the module, I was pleasantly surprised at how good everything sounded. No super high quality samples here but the sounds are solid and all of the pads, cymbals and pedals triggered very well. Rolls and other faster articulations triggered with no real issues. And despite everything being on the compact rack, there wasn't even much cross-talk unless you really wack things hard. And even though I'm no fan of beaterless kick pedals, this one worked as well as those from other manufacturers that I have played. The hi-hat pedal also worked well for simple open-close work. The drum pads are NOT dual zone so you get only one sound on each of those. The cymbals are dual zone and have different sounds for bow and edge with the ability to choke them as well. This is great for a drum kit in this price range. Scrolling through the rest of the kits in the module, I found them to be all fairly good sounding. Several of the kits sounded somewhat similar with not a lot of variation in the drum samples. "Metal" seems to be a theme here with a few of the kits named for that genre. Some samples sounded "bigger" mostly through the use of effects like reverb being applied. There was no way to adjust this that I could find but that's not a necessary feature for a beginner kit. And with 12 kits, there's still a nice variety of sounds. Probably the only downside for this as a beginner kit is that there are no built-in learning exercises (although it does have a built-in metronome), which many other kits do include. That said, it seems that this area is starting to lean more toward integration with external or 3rd party learning tools anyway. In that regard, this kit does include some nice features to support this. The module has separate headphone and output jacks and has an Aux input and Bluetooth support. On the latter 2, this allows for easily playing along with external sources or playing along with someone else. It also has a USB output to allow connection to MIDI devices or to a computer for recording using something like Garageband. The Bluetooth and USB features alone are great features on a beginner level kit. Overall, I really like this kit, and I think it's a great option for students or beginner drummers. Parents will definitely appreciate the ability to have their kids practice drums silently!! Alternately, it really could be used for someone needing something cheap for recording simple drum tracks. With the USB interface and the excellent triggering, this would definitely be suitable for laying down drum tracks in a project studio. And in either case, it's compact enough to fit in small places and could easily fold up enough to be placed in a closet out a corner out of the way. For a full electronic kit with EVERYTHING included, this is a great option for just over $200. ... show more

  • Decent Set
Size: EDS-2
As an unprofessional musician who got this as an addition for homeschool music class, I am pretty impressed with this. Set up was easy, as the directions were easy to follow. Adjusting the height was simple. The drums are nicely sensitive to just hands being used and not just drums sticks. The cymbals need a bit more and seem to mainly respond to only the drumsticks. It's easy to change the mode of the drums for different sounds. We did not have an amp, but it was super easy to hook this up to our large party speaker (Sony SP500) via Aux cord. For what we need this for we are very pleased and love this as an addition to our musical instrument arsenal for our special needs classroom. ... show more
