  • The World Is A Noisy Place
I can't imagine how many sounds I'm been missing out on, my cats cute little meow, the true timbre of my fiancée's voice, the beeps, bells and whistles of my car, and they were absolutely correct about the sounds being 'louder' than we're used to. They fit ok, and after a few attempts, leaned how to get them in securely, but then they tickle my ear (took a star off for this). I can only imagine the small vibrations from sound coming from the hearing aids is doing it, but I'm getting used to it, like I'm getting used to the autophony. Al in all, my hearing is greatly improved, and it's a curse and a blessing as I get to hear everything in the work office now, from every cough to every clink of a coffee cup being set down, but I also get to hear my niece's and nephews voices in full again. This is all after wearing for 1 day. I'm fully convinced they're going to change my life for the better as TV's aren't as loud and I can turn them on or off for playing guitar. I highly recommend these to anyone with medium hearing loss and/or tinnitus like myself, they'll change everything. EDIT** Two Weeks in and they're still a game changer for me. The multiple settings, tapping on my ear to change the settings, though the app needs to have the phone volume turned on in order to make changes, and I don't get that. I never had my sound turned on my phone. But, it's a minor complaint, really. ... show more

  • Comfortable, Discreet + Responsive Customer Support
The Eargo 5s tick all the boxes of features I was looking for, specifically: 1) Discreet 2) Comfortable for all day use 3) Rechargeable w long battery life The devices are programmed and controlled by a phone app that is a little clunky but I guess does the job. Users are able to select from a variety of program modes (normal, tv, restaurant, meeting + custom programs). From these four can be loaded to the devices and you can cycle through them by double tapping in front of the ear. This works well. I'd love the ability to install a mute option as one of the four programs available. Currently devices have to be muted via the app. When in use the app uses (inaudible) high frequency sounds to adjust settings for volume etc this is somewhat unreliable at times and things can get out of sync. As far as I know, there is no signal back to the app to confirm current state. This is a relatively minor problem but worth mentioning. To reset the devices you have to put them back in the charger, this is not always practical of course. Battery life is stated as "up to 16 hours". My normal day is generally 7/8am through to midnight which is why 16 hours is an important number to me. That said, the Achilles heel of this product seems to be battery quality. When new, the batteries do indeed last 16 hours +/-. However, after about 4 months, one of the devices lost approx 25% and would switch off after 11/12 hours. The other device remained at the full 16 hours. To their credit Eargo, after some diagnostic tests, replaced both devices under warranty. Unlike other companies, they sent replacements and I returned to defective devices back. This meant I wasn't left stranded for a couple of weeks. Nice touch. Unfortunately, exactly the same thing occurred with the new devices after 4 months. Again Eargo replaced them under warranty, no questions asked. However, as I approach the end of my original warranty period, I obviously have some concerns. Was I just unlucky or will I have the same battery problem in 4 months? Overall, my 1st year experience with Eargo has been very positive but my continued use of their products will be determined by what happens in the next 12 months. Update: July 2023 Well, as feared, one of the batteries has lost significant capacity and I'm out of warranty. As things stand, would not recommend the Eargo 5. Eargo have no trade-in or repair option as far as I know. Update 2: Nov 2023 Both devices not have very short battery life, 7/8 hours max. Following advice from Eargo customer service rep I declined to upgrade to the Eargo 7 or have them replaced ($300 each) as the company is "fixing the battery problems in 2024 with new model". I would advise waiting if at all possible. As Eargo refuse to standby what is clearly to me a major design / quality issue - I decided to buy a pair of Sony CRE-C10 for $900 until there is a better choice. ... show more

  • Technical problems & lack of support
I'd love to be able to write a more comprehensive review of these, but I barely got past the first stage before returning them. The trouble started with something minor, but annoying - couldn't register them with their serial number on their website. Then, I couldn't pair them. With either a recent iPhone or an android phone - just stuck in an endless loop. If they aren't paired to a phone you can only use the 4 built in presets which severely limits the usefulness of these things for the price. The pairing issue is apparently a known issue, though it's hard to find any useful info about these online. What really lost me on them was the support. It took 3 days for them to get back to me (granted, two of them were weekend days - their support doesn't work weekends) only to be run through a very perfunctory set of common-sense troubleshooting steps that I had already tried then told I would need to schedule time with "advanced support" - and the next slot was a week away. For $2500+ they need to do a lot better. I told them if I couldn't get this addressed this week I would be returning them and giving a 1-star review and I got a "sorry to see you go" reply. So here we are. I suffer from 70% hearing loss in my left ear and 15% in my right. Neither hearing bud was particularly loud and overall worse than my Widex Beyond hearing aids. I did like the fit and in-ear design. Maybe they would have worked better if I was able to configure them in the app - I'll never know now. ... show more
