  • Sportsman GEN4000TRI advice.
Yes it is possible to use this on a Sportsman generator. I do however have advice for anyone who wants to try it. 1. If possible, do this when your generator is new and still dry so you can flip it upside down without fear. Also, don’t let metal shavings from your drilling get in or on your new generator. It’s not that hard to lay down some paper towels or something before drilling to catch your shavings. 2. You will need to drill some holes and you will need some metric sockets/wrenches. Don’t count on a crescent wrench fitting in tight spots, have the right size combination wrenches. A ratcheting stubby combo wrench would be great for this but isn’t required. 3. I started with the easiest part. The stationary legs. To my surprise, 3 of the 4 holes are already there so you only need to drill one hole. You will likely need to squeeze it together a little to fit clear of the factory weld on the frame but it’s pretty easy. 4. MY REGRET. This kit comes with an axle for the wheels. It’s got a bracket welded to it on one side and a matching bracket that I presume you sandwich around the frame of the generator that this kit is designed for. The Sportsman GEN4000TRI has a broad flat bar there rather than a round one. I used a vice some muscle to reshape the provided bracket to be a little better shape and then I used longer bolts (that I had left over from a TV wall Mount kit) and sandwiched around the flatter, more rectangular shaped bar I have. The problem is it is only holding the axle on one side. If I could go back I would’ve left the supplied bracket and used that on the other side (underneath the axle) and made my own brackets to sandwich from above. Or perhaps even used U-bolts as another reviewer suggested. The bottom line is I would support the axle in two places not just one. This is in my opinion the most difficult part of the modification process so once you got the axle figured out you’re on easy street. 5. Drilling for the handle. First, if you center the drill holes on the frame, your handle will be off center. I realize that the center of gravity may not be exactly in the center, but I prefer my handle (where my hand grips it, not where it attaches to the frame) centered either way. Keep that it mind when choosing where you want your drill holes. 6. The angle you drill the holes matters. I suggest you drill them so the bolts will be horizontal (think parallel to the ground). Close is good enough. 7. The clip that holds the handle arm. Position this AFTER you mount the handle and see how it naturally hangs. This involves drilling close to your gas tank. I considered just using a couple tech screws but decided on carefully drilling through vertically and using the supplied hardware. 8. In general, a sharp center punch helps you keep your drill bit from “walking” when you start your holes. I also recommend using a smaller bit for pilot holes then switching to the full size bit. Don’t drill your holes too big because they don’t supply flat washers so only go as big as needed for the bolt to pass through. Overall I really like this kit and am happy I bought it. Eventually I plan to figure out a way to support my axle in a 2nd spot. Seeing as I couldn’t find a wheel kit designed for my Sportsman GEN4000TRI I think the was the best option I had. ... show more

  • Works but included tools wrong size
I like this product, purchased for this specific generator. Once installed, it is so much easier to move the generator to/from the storage shed when needed. Fortunately, I immediately realized I was not going to be able to move it around before I added gas and oil! Pros: 1) the generator was more of a problem than the wheel kit, as the holes did not line up and drilling through metal was involved. 2) maneuverability is good 3) handle is short, so not easy on the back if you're over 5ft tall. But still much easier than picking it up to move it! 2) No missing parts. 3) It works well for the intended generator once installed. 4) aside from the missing hole, wrong size wrenches, and unclear directions, it was easy to put together with the new generator upside down (before gas or oil). It would be more difficult with a generator that must remain right side up due to tight spaces and limited visibility. 5) The wheels only added about 3" to the height, so I can store it in its intended shed space. Cons: 1) the holes in the generator for the feet were covered with metal and I had to drill one large hole through the metal to install. 2) the wrenches provided are metric and the hardware was standard inches. Fortunately I had 1/2" and 5/16" wrenches available, although I stripped a bolt smooth trying to use the wrench provided and had some difficulty with it. 3) No numbers on parts list to match the picture, so figuring out what bolt went where was tricky. 4) The rubber feet that came with the generator had to be removed so that the wheel axle could turn. No tool provided the correct size, and this was not mentioned in instructions. 5) The instructions did not say on which side to install the wheels and feet. I had to look at online photos to figure it out. The product image for the wheels on Amazon just showed one photo of the individual parts. I hope this helps. A valuable addition to my generator which needs to be moved during frequent power outages. ... show more
