Did some research, found out this is a clone engine to the blown up 13hp on my snowblower. Swapped it out with this 18hp, only took a couple easy modifications. What a beast! Works so well that when a friend was having problems with a firewood processor we swapped out his tired motor with one of these and a new lovejoy coupler. I was impressed with the packaging of such a large item. I put oil in the crank case and a little gas in the fuel tank, gave it two pulls and it started right up. Not sure I have seen a motor like this run so smooth. I have a Kohler I put on a sawmill I built and got this one for another sawmill I am building. The Kohler is not as well balanced as this motor seems to be. I have not tried the electric start, however so far I am very impressed. Thank you! ... show more

great price. Motor is not loud, packed very well but the shipper must have dropped it off a 5 story building. I had to repair smashed air box and adjust throttle linkage. The gas tank was also smashed but my plan was to remove it anyway and use a larger tank. I didn't want to spend the time with a claim, it was really packed well and wasn't the sellers fault ... show more

Description clearly states Recoil/electric start. I hit the switch for Starter and nothing happens. Called the toll free number Amazon has listed for customer support and the person who answered the phone could barely speak English and insisted the XP18HPE was recoil start only. I informed her she was wrong and that it was indeed electric start capable and also mentioned it had an electric starter attached. I was placed on hold for over 10 minutes and she informed me I would have to speak to the manufacturer. She put me on hold, tried transferring me, then informed me they are only open Monday through Friday. I will attempt to contact them and hopefully get some questions answered Monday. The accompanying manual is pretty much lame. No mention of electric start. My inspection can find no battery and no terminals to hook one up even if a separate battery is required of which there is absolutely no mention of anywhere. I think two shakes of a lambs tail and this turkey is headed back for a full refund. Amazon Product Support is absolutely worthless! Product description and information from both Amazon and DuroMax is beyond poor. Update: Duromax was super. They sent me pictured instructions on exactly what was needed to be done to incorporate a battery for the starter. They listened to my comments and then asked where I was planning on using the engine and then suggested I get the high altitude kit for the carburetor. 8,550 feet in altitude. Amazon may be lacking but DuroMax hits a home run. ... show more

Seems solid so far, and started first pull! Only complaint is that it showed up with some minor damage and was a week late. Don’t trust the shipping dates! They didn’t even ship until after the original due date.

    • The seller refused to make contact so I called DuroMax and they returned my call in 30 minutes.
Style: 440cc Gas Electric Start
It arrived today, which was pretty quick. The box was intact except for the two top staples holding the box closed were gone, but two nylon straps kept it together. It was pretty loose inside the box, with top and bottom Styrofoam and an expanded cardboard block. The entire starter switch assembly was crushed top, bottom and to the side, so much that the black plastic cover was bulging away from the engine and the switch plate. Since I've not started it, I can't speak to its function. Also, there is no battery specification, nor is a battery mentioned in the owners manual anywhere. There is no included battery connection cable for the starter. There is a conflict between the removable caution tab on the oil fill which indicates (30 weight oil), and the manual which indicates both 10w-30 and 10w-40. Someone who does not know and actually reads the manual will at best be confused (10w-40 in warmer climates). There is a standard temp/oil type chart, but that too will leave many guessing. Lastly, the oil recommendation does not say conventional, blend or synth. I'll be using 10w-40 full synth Mobil One with a little Marvel Mystery Oil. The motor comes configured for 100% manual operation, and no conversion kit for cable controls for remote idle/throttle control. It's heavy and I don't want to send it back for the starter switch panel being crushed, so I'm hoping the stars associated with the review will solicit a response and hopefully a remedy? I've historically had great performance from DuroMax engines, and expect nothing less from this motor, once I get by the initial damage. I will revise the stars accordingly as I hear from the support team. ... show more

Wow!! This unit was just what we ordered. We have a home made wood splitter (40 years old). My husband took all the specs, ordered the motor and when we got the new one in, we had it changed over within an hour. As for use..... So Easy and So Nice to have an Electric Start!!
