Description

First released in 1981, Tortex® Picks were originally intended to be a high quality replacement for tortoiseshell. Jim Dunlop's trail-blazing creation became so much more than that, however, establishing its own identity and becoming the new standard by which all other picks are judged. Building on the precision, consistency, and color-coded gauge system he introduced with Nylon Picks, Jim resolved to create a pick with a bright and snappy attack, superior memory and durability, and an improved grip. He chose Delrin as his base material and then spent more than a year developing a special treatment process to draw out its full potential. This treatment process is what sets Tortex Picks apart from all others, providing their unique grip-enhancing matte surface and aggressive attack. Finally, Jim expanded on his previous picks' color-coded gauge system to create the bright and timeless palette that has become an industry standard. Because we stick to Jim's original formula, Tortex Picks remain our bestselling pick line. And we still make them at the Dunlop HQ in Benicia, California. With Tortex, Jim Dunlop launched a revolution, and the world of picks has never been the same. The turtle logo is instantly recognizable, and the vibrant Tortex palette has become a gauging shorthand for guitar players. Go into any music store and ask for Green or Yellow Picks—chances are, you'll be shown a pack of Tortex .88mm or .73mm Picks. Countless musicians across the world, representing every genre and playing style, have chosen Tortex Picks to help them do what they love. Made in the USA.

  • How Do You Review a Pick?
Style: 72 Pack Size: 0.88 mm Color: Green
How Do You Review a Pick? Such a basic guitar-player item... and so much at the mercy of each individual player's particular needs... but I'll give it a try. The Dunlop Tortex picks are perfectly good guitar picks. Whenever I would play the Strat in my all-around dance band, I would be playing all sorts of stuff, rock, country, jazz, ballads, polkas, whatever... this one, and the yellow one (.73mm) would be my go-to pick; not too flexible, not too stiff. I don't do so much of that anymore, and when I play acoustic, I would use a classical guitar, which I play with the fingers, or a nice heavy jazz pick (Dunlop 207). But recently I started playing steel string acoustic, and doing a lot of strumming, and the yellow and green Tortex picks are again my go-to pick. I went through the phase of trying strange or unusual shapes, and that other phase of cute or flashy colors... These basic Dunlop Tortex picks are the basic standard guitar pick shape, and the color is pretty much irrelevant, except that it makes it easy to select the thickness you want "at a glance". Also the texture of the material is a bit coarse, not quite as smooth/shiny/slick as the basic Fender tortoise shell pick, so, for me, it seems to be a bit easier to keep a grip on it. So, once again, this is MY OPINION of a good pick, based on my needs, which I've tried to define. If you're in a similar boat, these will do the job for you. If you like heavier or lighter, the other gauges are equally good quality. Good price, nothing flashy, just your basic no-frills pick that does the job. ... show more

  • The Tortex green picks are the only way to go.
Style: 72 Pack Size: 0.88 mm Color: Green
I’ve been using the Jim Dunlop Tortex .88 green picks for over 30 years and I still haven’t found anything I like better. They just feel right. Very stiff, so they work great for both rhythm and lead playing. The powder grip is probably one of my favorite things about them. Even after playing for a while they don’t slide around in your fingers like some picks do. They also hold up really well and last longer than a lot of cheaper picks I’ve tried over the years. At this point they’re basically my standard pick. I’ve tried a bunch of others here and there, but I always end up going back to the green .88 Tortex. ... show more

  • The only pick I'll ever use
Style: 72 Pack Size: 0.60 mm Color: Orange
I just ordered a 72 pack of these because its the only pick I've used for over 30 years, but for some reason I tend to lose them as soon as I put one down. Of course, I find them everywhere in the house eventually. I don't like an extremely light pick, but I don't like a really thick one either. Unlike many players, I don't use the pointed end, but instead I use the rounded edge. I find this way much easier to control my string attack not just for tone but for speed as well. I tend to wear out all picks fairly fast, but these last longer than picks made of other materials, especially plastic. I wear these picks out at the rate of about 3 a week, but a plastic pick won't even last through one gig. I consider a pick to be "worn out" when the edge wears down and no longer "bites" the string (also when there's no more logo on them). I also do a lot of hybrid picking using my fingers for things such as double stops, and always when playing slide and I find these picks very easy to palm. As I stated earlier, I've been using the .60mm orange picks for over 30 years, and I wouldn't use any other. ... show more

  • My pick for best pick
Style: 72 Pack Size: 0.73 mm Color: Yellow
Fairly durable, mellow tone, fantastic for my primarily acoustic play. Personally, I like them with the edge taken off a little, so its smoother. **update*** Ive had these picks for a couple years, and im still using this pack! I can put a few picks everywhere in the house. I've come to the conclusion that I like the tone of fender style hard plastic (or ultex) picks better, however those can shatter. In years of HARD playing, I've never broken one of these picks, which is a must for stage use. Because they are grippy, they won't fly out of your hand like other picks. The yellow version has worked well for both acoustic and electric, but I think I might step up and get a set of green next time. Truth be told, if you buy a set of these picks, you wont need to buy another pick for a long time. I stand by my position of these as being the best pick on the market, as a combination of value, texture, tone, and durability. Really a top notch pick and a bottom rung price. ... show more
