  • Not irritating to me, but I was already using retinols
The first thing I have to say is this is not for teens. Teens do not need retinol and it could be damaging to their skin. Second thing, use retinol products at night, use a moisturizer on top of it, and always use sunscreen during the day. I'm not a dr but please do your research. I'm pushing 50 and wish I would've heeded this advice earlier. I've been using this eye serum consistently as part of nighttime skin care routine for about two weeks. That's not long enough for visible results, so I'll come back to edit when I know more about how well it does long-term. So far it has not caused any irritation or burning. However, I was already using retinol products on my face (including around the eye area) before starting this one, so my skin was somewhat acclimated to retinol. I also still did test patches because I always do when trying new skin care products. I started with a test patch on my inner arm overnight and then did a small test spot on my cheek overnight. I had no reactions with those, so then moved on to using it around the eye area. I also do a retinol sandwich when applying this and any type of retinol. I apply a light moisturizer or hydrating serum first, then the retinol, then a medium-weight moisturizer, waiting just a few minutes between each step for them to absorb. The serum is only 15ml. While you only need to use a very small amount with each application, it still seems pricey for the amount you get. We'll see if I get results after a few more weeks of use, assuming I don't run out. Since you can't see thru the bottle, it's impossible to tell how much is left. Based on the price point alone I probably wouldn't order this again since there are other, less expensive options that are proven to be effective. The Lala Whipped Cream that comes with this is a sample size. Tiny but good for travel. It's not a product that's specific to the eye area, but I have been using it as part of the retinol sandwich I described above. It's hydrating and smooth, there's just not a lot of it included with this set. ... show more

  • Great for self care
Being a mom at 45 doesn’t stop me from indulging in my beauty routine. I love all things skin care and have used Drunk Elephant products for the last year. While I have face serums and moisturizers I have yet to try any of their eye serums. I get little sleep and need something to help smooth out the crows feet and depuff my eyes after a sleepless night. One thing I absolutely love about the Drunk Elephant Brand is its simple packaging that includes brightly colored tops. I like to use the Drunk Elephant A-Shaba Complex Eye Serum after cleansing my face in the morning. The twist up pump is an added bonus because I don’t have to worry about losing the lid to my serum in my morning rush. One pump is more than enough for both eyes. I gently pat the serum under each eye with my ring finger to ensure that I am delicate with my aging skin. The texture of the serum is of a watery lotion with a good amount of slip. It is very lightweight and absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy feeling that other eye serums leave. In addition to that it has no scent, which I appreciate as someone with allergies. I love that it includes caffeine, retinol, peptides and niacinmide. I have found as my skin ages those ingredients work well for me. I use this daily and do find that it does a good job of depuffing my eyes as for wrinkles I cannot say as of yet. I am 45 so I know that the wrinkles are here to stay but feel like this serum will do a good job of helping reduce their appearance. I have tried other far more expensive eye serums and seen no difference so while this product may be a little pricey I feel that it is a good value since I have seen results. The included Lala Retro Whipped Cream sample was also nice. A little of this product goes a long way and I love incorporating it with my Drunk Elephant products. Overall I am impressed with the performance of this eye serum and would gladly purchase it again. ... show more

  • very creamy and hydrating formulas, need careful hand to apply thin layers of product
I ordered these items because I am running low on eye cream and eye skincare products. I have never used any retinol products around my eyes and I had to go research that. It seems there may be some risks, so I was really careful testing this product. The packaging is really nice for both the serum and the eye cream. The retinol serum is large (and a good value) and it comes in a big protective pump that twists before the nozzle appears. It seems like it really protects the internal serum from UV exposure. The serum is for nighttime use because of the retinol and I found it to be very creamy and rather thick unless I was very careful about spreading the serum out. The hydrating eye cream was nice and thick too. It felt like a whipped type of product. My only complaint about the eye cream was that it was a very small pot, basically like a mini or sample size. My experience using the products is that the serum went on a little heavy unless I was super careful and then if I put the moisturizer on top I felt it was hard to keep it out of my eyes and I found that to be a little irritating and my eyes were not happy about that. I really did not want retinol in my eyes. When I revised how I applied this, I was able to get a very light film of the serum under my eyes and I also was judicious about the amount of moisturizer I layered on. It seemed to work a lot better. These worked for me when I was careful with them and they did not irritate my skin or eyes so long as I was able to keep the liquids out of my eyes. I have not seen any dramatic changes but they are very thick and hydrating. Value wise, I view this as just a retinol eye serum set with an eye cream sampler and so it is probably just an OK value. ... show more
