I've been metal detecting / treasure hunting for many years and have used all sorts of shovels from the USGI Tri-Fold E-Tool, to some old beat up ones in our shed, a fancy fiberglass handle trenching shovel (that I modified) to this one. The handle (and overall) design of this shovel is brilliant, need a shorter shovel... easy. Need a full-length shovel, easy. Sharp right out of the box. Great digger, glad I picked one up.

A bunch of people had problems with the tightening and I untightening pulling the pieces apart. Yes can be tight but they do come apart fine

The good: As an avid metal detecting addict I appreciated the physical dimensions of this spade. The length was perfect (I'm 6' 3"). The blade (although too heavy) was aggressive and wide enough to move a good sized plug. The fact that it came in 3 pieces was the reason I bought it. I brought it with me to England for 3 days of digging. My brother bought one as well, to do the same. We found the shovels functional but not without issues. The bad: The mechanical design for locking the pieces together was sloppy. It was a constant battle keeping the parts aligned as they continually came loose. We were constantly re-locking, re-twisting, and eventually regretting. After three days both of our shovels were no longer falling apart. In fact, both of our shovels had become seized at the joints and no matter how hard we tried, they would no longer separate. My brother and I ended up leaving the (now one piece) shovels behind in England. They were not going to fit in any checked bag and certainly couldn't be carried on. If you are considering buying this spade realize that you will struggle with the "locking" design and probably end up with a "one piece" shovel eventually. I can not recommend this for travel unless you are willing to duct tape over the locking ferrules when using it. Then, disassemble it after each use and lubricate the threading. Buyer beware... our shovels lasted only 3 days. 🤔
