  • Bargain of the Century!
Model: A5-32V
The Douk Audio A5 is my first foray into the intriguing new landscape of small class D amplifiers from China. As someone who got into "hi-fi" in the 1970s, I have always equated amplifier power with amplifier weight and size. Beefy power required heavy massive amplifiers. It was just an inarguable fact. Seeing the recent proliferation of these toy sized amplifiers definitely piqued my curiosity about whether these things could seriously be considered to be in the same league as traditional audiophile amps. I recently bought a pair of Elac Carina BS243.4 bookshelf speakers and found them to be power hungry. I had been using a Monoprice Pure Tube amp to drive them but the 10 watts per channel was insufficient to drive these speakers with any authority. I was looking for some additional clean power to be fed by the Monoprice amp (Love the sound of this amp!) working as a preamplifier, and wondered about one of these amps from Aiyima, Fosi, and Douk, etc. While I know the power ratings on these units are exaggerated, I was impressed with the measurements and reviews I saw online. With this Douk A5 on sale for only $85, I figured it was worth a shot. To say I was blown away by the sound of this amplifier is a huge understatement. The performance is incredible regardless of the price. When taking the price into account, it is truly absurd! In addition to the plentiful power, it managed to preserve the holographic imaging and soundstage of the Monoprice Tube amp. I remember reading some reviews that compared the Douk A5 favorably to multi-thousand dollar amplifiers, and thinking "Aw come on, that is ridiculous". Well I have now been thoroughly enlightened! I think there is a generational paradigm shift underway in the area of home audio amplifiers to the great benefit of audiophile consumers. These tiny class D amps with PFFB technology are the real deal! The only downside I can think of is the appearance of these amps are so cheap and toy like. You are not going to impress anyone with the looks of these as compared to a large, heavy, fancy, stylish, conventional class AB or class A amplifier. But how much are you willing to pay to impress people? I had ordered this with a standard 32V power supply and was curious what the performance increase would be like with the 48V power supply. So I ordered one. Performance was definitely raised a notch with more controlled and robust bass. I could really crank up the sound with the 48V power supply (71 watts @ 6 ohms -> 110 watts @ 6 ohms). However it makes the amp run HOT as the chassis serves as the heat sink. I removed the glass panel on top and replaced it with a piece of steel mesh but it is still very hot. Hopefully this does not affect the lifespan of the unit. Bottom line -This amp is a mind blowing value. As I listen to my system while I type this review, I am still having trouble reconciling the incredible sound I am hearing - with visual disconnect of seeing this tiny little unit being responsible for it. ... show more

  • Great value in a high quality, low cost chi-fi audio
Model: A5-32V
Set-up: PC USB > S.M.S.L. SU-1 DAC > Douk Audio A5 amp > Vera-Fi Audio Vanguard Scout speakers Application: PC speakers, including Amazon Ultra music streaming The speakers run $300 a pair, when you can get them. They sound great, if a bit warm, and come beautifully finished in real cherry wood veneer. The DAC is $85, the Douk Audio A5 amp is $76. Add maybe $30 for decent RCA and banana plug speaker wires and you have a fantastic little system for a total system cost under $500. You could probably spend $150 on a pretty good pair of speakers and still have a nice sounding system for near-field listeningfor a total of around $350. The little Douk amp puts out plenty of power. It can drive the Scouts with their 84.5db efficiency rating to well over 90 dB at 3 - 4 feet The combination of the Douk Audio A5 and the S.M.S.L. SU-1 produces a clean, punchy sound. Some have reported that the A5 leans toward analytical, which is a perfect complement to the fairly warm Scouts. The result is sound that is rich, yet detailed with great sonic imaging with nice instrument separation and a very wide sound stage. You won't mistake this rig for a $5,000 system, but your banker and your spouse will be much happier with this setup. Or maybe you already have a $5,000 system in your den and need a small system for your home office. Either way, this setup deserves consideration. Your results will, of course, depend on the source material. So far I have auditioned The Eagles Hotel California album ,The Doors LA Woman, and Paul Simon's Graceland. All are beautifully produced and engineered albums and all sounded lively and clean, but not overly analytical. Full Disclosure: I have hearing loss that rolls off quickly starting around 5kHz so there may be sibilance and other artifacts I can't detect. As always, YMMV. But frankly this Douk/SMSL/Scout setup is, to my ears at least, the bargain of the century. ... show more

  • Excellent Budget Amplifier!
Model: A5-32V
Great sound! Great value! You can adjust the power on LED color to your liking or turn it off! (Yay no horrendous blue lights searing my eyeballs!) Just need to get a good DAC to go with it now. Note: please follow the directions to plug the power supply into the unit BEFORE plugging it into the wall! I did it the other way around once and it sparked quite a lot! Design oversight? Maybe, but something I can live with if I follow directions ... show more

  • Includes post-filter feedback (PFFB), high pass and variable level aux output
Model: A5-32V
I found the sound of the Douk Audio A5 stereo amplifier to be natural sounding and dynamic. Although not noted in the provided product documentation, my understanding is that the Douk Audio A5 amplifier features post filter feedback (PFFB) for improved sound. PFFB can result in an amplifier achieving overall flatter frequency response that is less affected by speaker impedance changes across the audio spectrum. The right knob is the volume control. This control doubles as the power switch. There is no power indicator LED on the front panel of the A5. There are 3 multi-segment LEDs inside the A5 amplifier. These LEDs can be configured via dip switches located inside the unit to provide Red, Green or Blue illumination (or any combination of these three colors) to the inside of the A5 amplifier. There is a clear insert in the top cover of the A5 that can be easily removed to access the dip switches and the A5's other circuitry. There are two swappable op amps inside the A5 amplifier that can be changed if desired. On the rear of the A5 there is a 3.5mm output connection labeled Aux Out. I confirmed that the A5's Aux Out level is variable, full frequency. (Douk Audio could have labeled the 3.5mm connection as Pre Out or Sub Out.) The Aux Out level is controlled by the volume knob setting on the A5. The left knob on the front of the A5 lets you activate and adjust the high-pass filter. When switched on, the high-pass filter can be set anywhere between 30Hz and 200Hz. (Note that there are no conventional bass or treble tone controls on the A5.) The high-pass filter only affects the speaker level outputs and has no effect on the Aux Out's audio. Even without a subwoofer the A5's high-pass filter can be useful if you desire to roll off the lowest bass frequencies that are sent to the speakers. The A5 comes with a Douk/Nob Sound branded power supply rated at 32 volts and 5 amps. The included A5 documentation states the A5 is capable of 300 Watts x 2 @ 4 ohms. With the stock 32V/5A power supply I estimate the A5 is able to deliver ~50 Watts per channel output @ 8 ohms. You can substitute a 48 volt, 10 amp power supply so that the A5 would be able to deliver its maximum power. The case of the A5 amplifier, when used with the stock 32 volt power supply, runs about the same temperature as the Aiyima A07 Max with that amplifier's stock 36V/6A power supply. The A5's case temperature reading was ~82F, in standby and 90F when in use. In comparison, the Fosi Audio TB10D amplifier's case measured 72F, in standby and in use. [Update: I measured the standby power consumption of the A5 amplifier. Plugged in, not switched on, the power consumption measured 0.3 Watt. Powered on, no input signal, 4.7 Watts.] [Update 6/17/25: I like the Douk Audio A5 amplifier enough that I just purchased a second A5 amplifier while it was on sale. The A5 is one of a collection of Class D amplifiers I keep in rotation for use with different 8 ohm, 6 ohm and 4 ohm speakers (new and vintage models). Not every amplifier pairs well with every model of loudspeaker. Sometimes it is a lack of power that prevents the amplifier from bringing out the best in the speaker. Else there are a multitude of other reasons including the amplifier having a too low damping factor, speaker impedance variations and crossover interaction. Many times new speakers need time (~40 hours or more) to break in to sound their best. Amplifiers also may need time before the power supply and filter capacitors fully form for best sound. Before swapping op amps, try swapping amplifiers. The other Class D amplifiers were each purchased on Amazon: Fosi Audio TB10D (has been compatible with every 8/6/4 ohm speaker I have tried); Aiyima A07 Max (in both stereo and mono mode, the A07 Max is small but powerful with 3dB or more headroom than the A5 or TB10D); WiiM Amp (weak WiFi performance, good sound with adequate power for most speakers and rooms, just so so soundstage and imaging) , WiiM Amp Pro (better WiFi performance, flatter frequency response, better soundstage and imaging than WiiM Amp, WiiM Vibelink Amp (the most powerful WiiM amplifier (to date), flat frequency response with good sound stage and imaging (similar to WiiM Amp Pro but with more available power, headroom.) I enjoy listening to the Douk A5 amplifier powering the Saiyin DS6700M small bookshelf speakers; a 2-Way Passive Speaker; 3.5" Woofer & Silk Horn Tweeter that are sold on Amazon. See my separate review of the Saiyin DS6700M speakers.] ... show more

  • This is a great little amp!
Model: A5-32V
I purchased and received a Douk Audio A5 from Amazon a few weeks ago. It is a nice little amp. I purchased it for speaker testing purposes (I got tired of lugging around my bigger class AB amps) and to run my little PA speakers every now and then (ditto). I've been listening to it for some time now and it seems like a solid little amp. Pretty tight bass too. And I did have my doubts about it, but that variable high-pass filter has turned out to be very useful. At no time did I feel the need to use a more powerful PSU with the A5. Additional plus - you can use dual banana plugs with the A5. You just need to wire them up differently. Use one across the positive terminals, and the other across the negative terminals. Of course, that could have been avoided if the output terminals were arranged (+ - / + - ) rather than (+ + / - - ), so I guess that's peeve #4, LOL. I purchased and received an Douk Audio A5 from Amazon a few days. Nice little amp. Purchased it for testing purposes and to run my little PA speakers every now and then. I've been listening to it for some time now and it seems like a solid little amp. Pretty tight bass too. And although I did have some initial doubts about it, the variable high-pass filter has turned out to be very useful. Note: My test speakers are a pair of DIY ones I put together a few years ago. They're rather insensitive (designed for nearfield use), and at no time did I feel the need to use a more powerful PSU with the A5. The Fb for the speakers is around 50 Hz, so I set the HP filter below that, basically by turning it up until the bass started to noticeably reduce in volume, then turning it back down slightly. My only peeves so far are: (1) 32V PSU is the only option offered for it off of Amazon, (2) The clear acrylic top cover can't be fastened into place (which means I'll have to rig up something - until that happens I've left the peel-off sticker in place), (3) the volume control knob is basically useless until rotated past the 9 o'clock position. Additional plus - you can use dual banana plugs with the A5! You just need to wire them up differently. Use one across the positive terminals, and the other across the negative terminals. Of course, that could have been avoided if the output terminals were arranged (+ - / + - ) rather than (+ + / - - ), so I guess that's peeve #4, LOL. Now, is Douk Audio going to produce a companion subwoofer amplifier to match the A5? Basically, the A5 with an adjustable low-pass filter instead? Or, even better, with adjustable low-pass and high-pass filters :). I'd immediately place something like very high on my purchase list. ... show more

Model: A5-32V
Short version: Works great but sticker on top leaves unsightly goo see pic. Long version: Sounds & works great great so far (purchased March 2025). It is driving some B&W M1B's for a desktop setup. Unfortunately, the sticker to hold the glass in during shipping, left a mass of goo when I peeled it up. Signal path is from my PC USB-C -> Schiit Hel 2e using 3.5mm to RCA -> Douk Audio A5 using 3.5mm to RCA -> Nobsound G2 Pro I am going to buy some Goo Gone and try it hoping it doesn't discolor the metal part. I am sure it will come off the glass fine. In other reviews they were able to remove the sticker without issue. I must be unlucky or the sticker sat on too long from the factory. I am also using the Nobsound G2 Pro to drive a single 12" Infinity Reference 1262W in a 4.25 cu foot vented box. I had to turn the gain way down because my 12" in it's big vented box under the desk in the corner is just too much bass! This setup sounds fantastic. I kind of wish I had spent a little more and got the 48 Volt power supply for the A5 because when I want to blast it beyond reasonable levels, the amp runs out of power understandably. I see the 48Volt is now only $20 more! I think when I ordered it was a separate purchase of a lot more money & wasn't available on Amazon. Nice little amp but it just can’t run 48v battery even when it say you can. Sounds great but gets way too hot for my liking with 48v. It sounds nice with the stock 32v battery but 48v takes all these mini amps to the next level. Had to send it back and reconnect the old trusty A07.
