I needed to replace an 30 year old HK that was the heart of my entertainment center. In particular I needed optical input, because everything is now hooked up to my smart TV, making optical my only option. Units I found ranged from around $50 to over $1,000...and then I found this one. It had all the input options I needed, even if I was doing direct connect AND optical input. The Donner receiver is smaller, runs cooler, and has a higher output than my old HK. And it cost less than a quarter of the price I paid for the HK I purchased 30 years ago. As an extra bonus, the audio separation is better, and it has more functionality. This is one of those increasingly rare cases where the product got better and cheaper.

I give it one star I hooked all my speakers up to it it was going through the TV perfectly and it likes to do this thing where a whole bunch of others were they overheat and it turns off it wasn't doing that it was just going back and forth it is not worth it

easy to hook up and sounded good until a few minutes after turning on, it cuts out like the amp is overheating. Clicks on and off. Requested replacement. Will see if it works better. It is an electronic item. So things happen. Will update when new one arrives.

Three volume controls for left and three for right let you use multiple sets of passive speakers, either in the same or other rooms. Each of the six controls has dual connectors allowing 12 speakers, total. I connected KLH bookshelf speakers with subwoofer to 1L and 1R, and homemade 6 speaker towers to 2L and 2R. 3L and 3R are vacant at the moment. I can balance the lot for a pleasing sound. Note: this is not the same as decoding surround sound. I connected my smart TV to the amplifier via optical cable, and DVD and Blu-ray players are connected via HDMI to the TV. This leaves several inputs for eventual expansion. Have not tested the Bluetooth, and am waiting on an adaptor for the FM antenna input connection. -- the included antenna wire is inadequate in my rural area. Very satisfied so far.

This is a great receiver. I would definitely recommend it. It didn't work for me simply because I was looking for a receiver that I could control with my TV remote through the hdmi connection.
