  • Donner vs. Lyx vs. Squier
Size: 39" Right Handed Color: Sunburst
I'm by no means a professional muscian. I played an acoustic guitar for years and decided I wanted to get an electric guitar, so I looked at multiple items here on Amazon. I'm sure a lot of people are looking at these beginner packages and I can tell you that after getting two of them, I have learned a lot. First of all, the Donner package is really much better than the Lyx with the exception of the amp. The Gig bag is padded, and has backpack straps. The cable is much better, and has a velcro strap so you can pack it up. The strap is ok and the tuner is like all the others and probably all made in the same place. The guitar is very nice looking and this one has the HSS configuration which is great. The mini amp is cute but not very functional except to use at home. It definitely works and can produce some sound but not a lot and it's the kind that some people strap to their belt and play. The Lyx amp is an actual amp and is surprisingly good. From reading the other reviews, it appears it is hit or miss whether you get one that has been set up. I did not. My first pick was the Lyx and it had a few issues, which I reviewed on that product so I sent it back and got the Donner. When I opened the packaging I was impressed with the quality of all the parts, and then I tried to tune it. I tried everything, including purchasing a maintenance kit with all the measuring devices and nothing I did could get the low E string to stay in tune. It would tune as an open string and then if I tried to intonate it ( use the 12th fret, which is E an octave higher), it was sharp. I then tried the whole scale on the string and all were sharp. Ok, so these guitars need to be set up properly and so I went through the process with the help of YouTube and tried to get it to intonate, but had no luck. The B and high E worked fine, but the rest of the strings were not tunable. I even adjusted the pickups to make sure they were not interfering with the tune. Thinking maybe it was me I went to the local Guitar Center to look at a Squier, and it had the same issues. However, when I took it to the in house luthier, he was able to intonate it (using the same process I had done) in a few minutes. Having become an instant "expert" through YouTube, I decided it could be one or more of several issues: the strings, the tuning pegs, the nut or the frets. At that point, I decided it wasn't worth the effort. It's a beautiful guitar, with nice features but if it needs to have new strings ($5 to $10) and then if that didn't fix it, I'd need to take it to the luthier for a professional setup ($50) and maybe change the tuning pegs ($60 for Grovers). I'm sure it could be made to work, but at the end of the day and spending an extra $120, I think it would be better to just get a Fender Squier in the first place. You can get one for $179 on Amazon but it's just the guitar alone. If you want the Gig bag it's another $30 plus $30 for a mini amp, $10 each for tuner and strap and another $10 for capo and picks and $10 for a cable you have a much better package for $120 more than the Donner. Plus, you now have an actual Fender Squier, and I'm thinking the quality control on a Fender even one built in China like these are, has much better quality control. So, if you just want a package and don't want to bother with the other stuff, the Donner is I believe a higher quality package than Lyx, and you may get lucky and have one already set up. But, if not, you may spend an extra $120 on upgrades and a setup. ... show more

  • No information about guitars on Donners website
Size: 39" Right Handed Color: Sunburst
I love the guitar, plays well. Only problem I have is lack of information about the guitar on the Donner website. I found no user manual at all. This is my first electric guitar and I didn't even know what the 5 position switch on the front did. I could not find any info on the guitar setup like pickup height settings, 2 tone knobs, etc. I had to look on you tube and finally found the info needed. Like I say I love the guitar it looks and feels nice, just wish Donner had better support for their product for newbies like me. Haven't had the guitar but for a week so dont know if it will develop any issues, but the guitar does not feel cheap or flimsy and I think it will be a good fit for me especially as my first electric guitar. And the price for everything you get, I am glad I bought it. ... show more

I've played guitar before, and after a break from it, I'm getting back into it, and this has everything that a new beginner will need to learn and be familiar with playing without having to go out and get something else, very well made and great quality. You can tell that Donner takes pride in their product by the support they provide and the warranty that it comes with, definitely will recommend to family and friends. ... show more

  • Amazing Value
Size: 39" Right Handed Color: Sunburst
The media could not be loaded. I’d had my eye on the Donner DST-1S for some time. A kit that included a guitar, amp, cord, capo, tuner, gig bag, extra strings, and four picks for $129? What wasn’t to love? Especially considering the Stratocaster-style guitar came with two single coil pickups and a humbucking pickup (S-S-H), which, while not uncommon, is still harder to find than the more common three single coil pickup configuration. At first glance, I imagined the guitar would be mostly trash. It had to be at that price point, right? But the few existing reviews were positive, and I was already a fan of other Donner products like their 10 watt amp (the DEA-1) and their effects pedals. Could it actually be a decent guitar? Turned out it was. Let’s start with its appearance. Its high gloss sunburst finish was equally as sharp as my Telecaster’s. Its neck did not share the gloss. It had more of a dry, matte finish, which I was not mad at. Felt fine. I did wish the frets were filed and polished. Like many affordable guitars, this one had frets that were a bit poky on the ends. That wasn’t a deal breaker. With a little work and a bit of YouTubing, anyone could learn how to fix those frets and make them feel as if they were on a high-end guitar. The action, right out of the box, was playable. It was lower near the headstock, and a bit higher near the bridge, but it didn’t seem to impact the tone or the way it played much. At some point I’ll adjust that action, but for now it works. I noticed no string buzz, and the intonation seemed mostly accurate. Though the guitar was fit with a tremolo, I put the the tremolo bar (also known as a whammy bar) away. Even on high end guitars, tremolos are famous for wrecking the guitar’s tuning, so I sure didn’t trust this one to keep the guitar on pitch after a good old fashioned Eddie Van Halen dive bomb. Not that I could sound like Eddie. Because I couldn’t. Not on my best day. The strings were fine. I doubt they were as quality as Ernie Balls or D’Addarios, but they were plenty slinky for my playing and sounded good. The pickups, as far as I could tell (I’m no expert), sounded okay. There was a significant difference in volume when switching from the single coils to the humbucker. The humbucker was way louder. I could see myself playing a rhythm chord progression with the single coils and then flipping to the humbucker for a lead solo. The humbucker would provide that necessary volume boost to let the lead cut through the instrumental mix and be heard over the other players. Many players simply hit their stomp box to achieve this (Tube Screamer, anyone?), but the humbucker does the job. The amp, a tiny little 3 watter, was surprisingly good. It charged with an included USB cord, and included both a clean and a distorted channel, plus knobs to adjust gain, volume, and tone. It also had inputs for headphones and for auxiliary items like an MP3 player. It was so small and so light, you could easily toss it in a backpack and take it anywhere. The gig bag was way more sturdy than I anticipated. I’d purchased cheap guitars before and found their gig bags to be little more than burlap sacks. This one had decent zippers and was even reinforced with rubber padding at the bottom. The capo was better than some I’ve purchased in the past. The spring was strong enough to solidly grip the guitar neck, and clipped on with no problem at all. The tuner worked fine, and came with a battery. I hate it when I buy something that requires batteries, especially those weird coin-shaped batteries, but doesn’t come with batteries included. Burns me up. Thankfully, Donner anticipated my needs. All in all, I was really happy with this guitar. At $129, I’m not sure how they even make a profit. Nicely done, Donner. Nicely done. ... show more

Is nice I was confused at first because I’m a beginner, but I got the hang of it. I can say I was a bit suspicious at first . Has a few scratches on it but may have been from the delivery I’m not sure. Nice color as well .
