  • Very Good Drum Set
Size: BackBeat
Really enjoy this drum set. It has many great sounds (kits). The lights really add a nice extra feature

  • Game changer!
Size: BackBeat
This kit has been a game changer! I use it primarily in my studio for recording and practice. I save loads of time by keeping this kit set up and not having to load/unload my main kit before and after gigs. Having it set up takes up a lot less space than a regular kit and the different kits are a lot of fun. I highly recommend keeping a notebook and recording which kits you like best and which drums in particular you like so you can program your own custom kit. One common complaint is that you really need to adjust the levels on each individual channel to get it to sound natural. You will sometimes hit a Tom or cymbal and it’s exponentially louder than the rest of the kit. This is quite easy to do with the giant touchscreen interface module. Very easy and intuitive to use. Just remember to screw it into the mount or it could fall off. I haven’t used the app with it just yet. I would rate the overall trigger responses to be 4 out of 5. Rimshots can get cancelled out by pad hits and vice versa. The hi-hat sounds good overall, but gets cut up and sounds very digital when doing fast, intricate sticking and pedal manipulation. The snare sounds is good and you can get some really nice sounding drumrolls and paradiddles out of it. The lights are pretty cool and definitely add an ambiance and excitement to your playing. Really fun to play in a dark room. However, I seem to have a small glitch on one of the Toms. The light is very sporadic and will often only be 1/4 to 3/4 on. It changes with hits but does not match the look of the rest of the lights and can become distracting. (I have not reached out to Donner or researched if there’s a simple fix, yet) I will try the app and see if I can change it in there. The kick pad is kind of disappointing. There is about a 2 inch sweet spot, right in the middle. For those of us that use double kick pedals, it’s pretty much impossible to get your beaters that close. Therefore, I have to slightly offset them so they hit the trigger. My right kick sound isn’t exactly “full” as it’s not dead center, but it’s much louder than my left pedal which barely seems to touch the trigger. I’m actually considering ditching the double pedal and just using the single. I highly, highly recommend a good drum monitor and subwoofer in order to really hear the kit. Also, invest in some good in ear monitors. The direct sound of the drum kits really sound alive and realistic in a good set of in ears. The frame and built in plug-ins make set up a breeze. The frame is study and you can really wail on it. Overall, I’m extremely happy and my opinion is high for this e-kit. There are better, much more expensive kits out there, but there are also WAY WORSE than this. The module is amazing and easy and the sounds are top notch. If you are just grooving and not doing anything insanely technical or fast, this kit is perfect. I can play late into the evening with my ears in and my wife can sleep soundly in the same house. Win, win. Thanks Donner! ... show more

  • Poor customer service

I was told by customer service this product comes with a one year warranty. We’ve had it a month and one of the heads is damaged. I have sent multiple emails and you guys refuse to respond. I am escalating this with Amazon

  • BAD CABLES AND BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE
Size: BackBeat
Bought this kit and one of the drum head cables did not work. I contacted customer service and instead of just sending another cable (as if I ask for extra cables just for the fun of it) they required me to email a video of the problem. I emailed a video and have received no response and no cable. I have reached out again to hopefully get one of their junk cables. It's been over a month that we have not been able to fully use the kit because of this cable issue. I guarantee this isn't the first time this has happened to someone. I don't have time for this nonsense. Don't be lured in by the price and fancy appearance. Avoid this brand and go with one of the established names. ... show more

  • Donner BACKBEAT: Mediocre drum kit with a lot of bells and whistles
Size: BackBeat
EDIT/UPDATE: Donner customer service has reached out to me and seems to be doing everything in their power to right this situation. However, other than replacing the defective clamps, the only solution for this drum set is a drastic firmware update. I forgot to add a real pet peeve in my original review: sometimes a drummer hits the bass drum and hi-hat sort of half-open, then closes it quickly for a percussive effect sound. The opening drum beat of Take The Money And Run features this effect. On this kit, it is pure trash. I'm sorry, but it's just horrible, it makes a staccato cut-off electronic sound that is nowhere near the sound you'd expect it to make. Somehow, Alesis and Roland have done this right, but Donner needs to fix this with a software update. - end EDIT This is an expensive musical instrument, so I am going to be very honest when I give you my opinion on it. I am an experienced hobbyist drummer, having played now for over 40 years on both acoustic and electronic drum kits. I have owned e-kits from Roland, Alesis (two different sets), and now Donner. I have been using e-drums as practice drums for many years, while I gig with an acoustic kit. I hope this gives you some confidence in what I have to say. I wanted to LOVE this drum set, I really did. I want to see companies like Donner bring competition to this market, to improve quality and prices overall. Donner has been producing a lot of percussion equipment lately, and this is their attempt to step onto the playground with the big kids, but I have to say, they are not ready yet. This kit, while very inventive and advanced in many ways, suffers from overcomplication and - in my opinion - terrible playability issues. Unfortunately due to the nature of Amazon reviews, I can't go into too much detail, so I'm going to just briefly go into some of the features and issues. First of all, the full-color touch screen module is amazing. It's very easy to navigate (once you get used to a couple of conventions), and it looks great. BUT - it has a "cheap" feel to it (especially the power button), and so far I've found two spelling errors (one being the word "drum"). Sometimes the screen isn't responsive and I find myself tapping repeatedly to get a response. The drum rack is another ingenious design - all the wiring is contained within, and you simply plug your pads into "ports" on the side of the rack. Everything is labeled clearly and easy to set up. You modify the rack using twist tighteners on top of each post, making it easy to adjust right from the throne. Claw clamps are similar to Alesis in design, and present many options as far as height and distance for your toms. As I said, and should repeat, setup of this kit is a breeze and takes less than half an hour to get it up and playing. There are 50 preset drum kits, ranging from the usable to the questionable (a kit with all snares of different pitches? really?), but I wasn't "blown away" by any of them. First I plugged into an 80-watt drum amp but the sound was so crappy that I switched to headphones. Then I realized a default reverb setting was on and was literally destroying the sound of every kit. Off, everything sounds much better. But still, nothing mind-blowing, and every single kit I played on seemed unbalanced as far as sensitivities and volume goes. I'd be rocking a groove, throw in a fill, and the toms would sound like undecipherable clipped-out mud. So I went to volume settings. Turns out, you can change the volume of every instrument on every kit. But the default cymbal volume on EVERY kit is 50 (of 100), so I wondered why I had to literally SMASH my cymbal to get it to crash, then I discovered I need to alter the volume AND sensitivity. There's no way (I know of) to do this globally, so if you like a few kits, you need to go in and change every setting of them to make them sound decent. Now I need to talk about my biggest problem with this Donner kit, and that is the tactile response of playing it. It is frustrating. I feel like I have to hit every pad twice as hard, and even then, the feel and sound are just not satisfying. I've changed sensitivity settings. I've messed with crosstalk and curve settings, and all the other mystical settings they give us to make us scratch our heads. I just want to play a good sounding, good feeling electronic drum set. Just to be sure, I have both this new Donner and my older Alesis Command kits set up and when I switch back to Alesis, it's like a breath of fresh air. Yes, there are a lot of fun things hidden in the module. You can jam to a bunch of different songs in different styles, you can learn some fun drum beats and also your rudiments and play them for a "grade" in kind of a game, there's a metronome to help your time, there are 1500 sounds for you to create custom kits, etc., etc. AND, to top it all off - there are LED LIGHTS!!! Yes, it's super cool! Yes, you can do lots of different things with the lights and all the different colors. Does it make the set playable? No. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it still oinks. I should also mention that two of the claw clamps came with the springs caught under the washer. I emailed Donner customer service about this and it has been over a week and I have not had any response. I had to "fix" it myself by clipping off part of the spring and unscrewing the rest of the washer, causing damage to the screws, but I was able to use the clamps after. Not what I was hoping for as far as customer service, in my opinion this quality control issue was unacceptable. Like I said, I really wanted to love this kit, especially considering the price. My Alesis kit is exactly half the price and I will probably go back to it and either return or sell the Donner kit. It should be a ton of fun to play, and for some people, it will be. But for people looking for a solid, tactile, responsive electronic drum kit, who don't care about lights, games, etc., I'm sorry to say you'd be better off sticking with the trusted brand names until Donner is ready for the big leagues. ... show more
