I’ve been using the DJI Osmo Action 5 for a few weeks now, and it has completely exceeded my expectations. The video quality is stunning — crisp 4K footage with vibrant colors and excellent stabilization, even when I’m hiking or recording from my drone setup. The horizon balancing is buttery smooth and gives everything a cinematic feel. Battery life is also impressive for how powerful this camera is. I can record multiple clips throughout the day without constantly worrying about charging. The touchscreen is bright and responsive, even under direct sunlight, and the magnetic quick-release system makes it super easy to switch mounts or angles in seconds. Camera has worked out ok in the short time I’ve had it. However, I found the smalll USB port side access panel missing after mountain bike outing. Also, there are too many small mounting accessories and there are no instructions as to how to use them

I've owned two much more expensive GoPros, the last being a Hero 7 Black. The battery lasts easily twice as long as the GoPro, and the image quality is outstanding. The IS is so good, video from a dirt bike in extremely rough terrain looks like it was shot from a drone, hovering through the woods. This is a really nice action camera with a great price point. My only gripe is a noticeable transition when reviewing videos when it starts a new file. The file size is capped around 4.7 gigs *I think. I'd prefer to have the entire length of video on one larger file, and I haven't figured out how to change this setting. I also shoot video with a Canon, and there is no noticeable glitch between the two (or more) files for longer videos, but there is a slight noticeable glitch when using files from the DJI. The wind noise is pretty bad, but I was able to easily fabricate using soft foam and hot glue a wind sock that works great. ... show more

Overall, it’s a good camera. The wide-angle videos look amazing. I bought the standard combo, but most of the extra items went unused. One downside—the tripod that came with it is poor quality; it broke even with normal, careful use.

EDIT: After a few days of use, my new Osmo Action has begun to display an overheating error and shuts down after about 15 mins. of recording. I’m hoping that I just got a defective unit, since I can’t seem to find a lot of information online about this being a regular problem. I have a new one ordered and will be returning this one. I will try to update this review once I’ve tested the replacement. For now, I’m leaving it at 5 stars, but that will certainly change if this problem should also persist with the replacement! My initial impressions: I absolutely love this camera. It’s my first GoPro-style action camera and I don’t know how I could be happier. Battery life is somewhat short, but I bought extra batteries and a charger, a tripod, an accessories kit, a table top tripod, a boom mic, lapel mic, mic adapter, another case, and MORE and I still haven’t spent what I would have on the GoPro 9 camera alone, which I was also considering. Great video quality, features, etc.!! Going to order another one or two soon, hopefully. ... show more

Out of the box, this camera turns on five times, then turns into a brick without first "activating" it via the smart-phone app. That app is pure spyware. There's no legitimate reason why an app would be required to "activate" (ie "use") the camera. If I buy a camera, I expect to use it, out of the box, without having to install an app, "read and understand" several End User License Agreements, create an account, and expose all of my files, location, phone-contacts, etc to a Chinese spy company. If someone wants to use the app, that's fine, but REQUIRING all of that to use the camera is a deal-breaker for me. Trying to install the app and pair the camera is yet another undesirable headache. Video modes: This camera is supposed to give the Hero-9 (or at least the Hero-7) a good run for the money, but there's no "native" white-balance (a ProTune feature since what, at least Hero-2?). No on-screen zebra-striping or histogram; those features require the app. In manual mode, I can set the shutter and EV, to let the ISO control the exposure, but there's no indication of the current ISO or actual EV on-screen or in the app; this would make it hard to use ND filters under variable lighting. No wide/medium/narrow views, just a wide view that's not as wide as GoPro. There's no way to turn off Bluetooth on the camera. If the camera is on, it's broadcasting a Bluetooth MAC and other unique identifiers. These are just problems I'm finding in the first few minutes. Many of these features that I'd expect on-screen are available via the app, but the excessive app permissions and the *REQUIREMENT* to use the app to "activate" the phone is a no-go; not to mention that I want to use these features without a smart-phone. "Features" like this are pushing me back to GoPro, and other action-cameras that aren't heavily reliant on spyware.
