I have had my Dillon 550B since 1989. It has more than paid for itself. I have precision loaded .22 and .30 caliber rifle rounds, then after a ten minute caliber change, made a thousand 9mms or .45s. A cam arm broke on it a couple years ago, I took it back to Dillon, they repaired, upgraded, and serviced it for no charge. I recently got a RL1100, but I am still using that 550 for everything but 9mm and 223. ... show more

I'm going to try to synopsize this. I didn't try to read the 5 Star posts as they are all going to be complimentary. However, I started with the 3 Stars, just to see what disappointing things they didn't like. In as much there were only a few...which I agree with, these are fantastic presses! I began owning my first Dillon WAY BACK from Mike's humble beginning, and I do mean "humble".(1980's). I bought my first Dillon, a 300, then a 450..then a 450B, at his Scottsdale shop...very small building. He gave me a mini tour. Well, any way, that's a short, short history of Mike Dillon's start-up. RIP, Mike. This is were his motto, no BS warranty started. I am a satisfied customer of that warranty. As purported, the "stick" powders can be inaccurate, not by much, but a little, especially the IMR brands...(they "crunch" when the handle is operated, cycling the measure) with the Dillon powder measures. That is why you need to have a good scale handy and WEIGH every charge for infinite powder accuracy...sorry, but that is the way it is unless you invest in a higher-end measure which I use for that powder.(I still weigh each charge anyway because I want every load to be the same...defeats the purpose of a high-end measure, but consistency is better. I want to win, so I want my loads to be cloned). Ball powders work best. Also, the one 3 star report indicated multiple bins...nope, it only shows one, the finished cartridge bin. The other is 'grayed out" as well as the 9'' stand. What you see is what you get! The shell plate does not automatically rotate as indicated, and yes, with good reloading ethics, you will not find this a problem. Once you get the feel of loading, this should not be a minor inconvenience... if that. An entry level loader must apply himself to the fine details.(Us old timers think we're too smart sometimes showing off with our pedantic knowledge) As it was noted, a double charge is possible with a small charge but one would have to be non observing of his attention to detail. How this would happen: If the loader DID NOT put another empty cartridge in the 1st priming station, then yes, that would happen...but that is not how the loading procedure is done; there has to be a shell in each station to work correctly. If you want an auto index machine, open your wallet. My caveat: PAY ATTENTON..DON'T SMOKE AND WEAR EYE PROTECTONI I can go on and on but I am getting verbose but all I wanted to do was add my opinion. Final word: I am a fifty years' reloader. I own eleven Dillon 550's plus a progressive Hornady and a multitude of others. I got more affluent and lazy! I am not and have not been an employee of Dillon or paid by them to promote their products. They have been good to me. If one is ever able to visit their showroom: DAMN! My advice: Call Dillon Precision, ask about their NO BS warranty! It's an expensive hobby today. In the long haul, it will amortize the investment if you are an addicted reloader like me. - Loading 38/357 and 44spl/mag - RCBS carbide and Redding Pro dies. Redding a bit nicer - Lee factory crimp is a nice to have - the Inline Fab stand on Amazon is better than the Dillon one - Inline Fab double bullet tray very nice to have as well - Led light also a good upgrade. I prefer the U shaped one that does not go on the tool head - Dial calipers for verifying measurements - Hornady balance scale for verifying weights - Scale calibration kit to verify scale accuracy ($10, highly recommended) Didn't want to waste my money on a single stage press just to learn on, then quickly upgrade. This press isn't hard to learn on. Not being auto index is a plus so you can focus on what each station is doing and is set up right, or even easily use any station as a single stage. Powder measure has worked reliably with accurate 7 and HP38. H110 was a pain to dial in and tended to dribble on the down stroke. I don't 100% verify charge weights once it's setup, as it defeats the idea of a progressive, but I do take the time to dial in until it's reliable and then do weight checks every so often and at the end. (This follows quality engineering practices in highly regulated industries.) Good operation practice should be: 1. Get all your materials out, everything else put away. Label critical items, like what powder is in the dispenser. What primers are in the tube. Put away unneeded extra materials (keep a clean workspace.) 2. Take the time to set every station up properly, including verifying accuracy and repeatability of all critical measurements 3. Work the press in a repeatable sequence, free from distraction. Avoid stop - starts. If I do get distracted, I'll clear the press and dump filled cases and start sequence over. Better to repeat a step than double charge. 4. Periodic checks for powder accuracy. Final weight check. I try to keep track of my consumed primers to make sure I didn't miss any. 5. Store completed ammo in well labeled containers. Bullet weight, powder type and weight minimally. 6. Return all unused materials back to their containers, and clean up any spills. ... show more

I got mine straight from Dillon but I really, really like this loader. Plenty of YouTube videos to help with setup but I bought the Dillon video because it covers every aspect of setup, adjustments, maintenance, etc. The cool thing about this loader is for not a lot of money you can set up an additional loading head for another caliber and switch in minutes. Unless you're shooting hundreds and hundreds of rounds a month, this loader is plenty fast and it teaches more about the process than a more mechanized and automated model. Plus, this model will load just about any rifle or pistol cartridge out there. ... show more

    • If you can get your caliber in carbide dies, ist will eliminate lubing the cases.

I used a Dillon RL450 for years. It was supposed to be capable of 450 rounds per hour. I frequently exceeded that, with 500 - 525 rounds per hour. I am sure the 550 press is capable of close to 600. I can recommend the Dillon to anyone who is serious about shooting.
