Super Compact Router, Easy To Control And the LEDS are a Big Bonus

I bought the DEWALT DWP611PK Compact Router Kit for usage in tight places but specifically for finishing up a Speaker Tower build I’m working on. This router worked perfect for cutting out the entire speaker recesses, Banana Input Terminal Plates, 2” Round Speakon Terminals, and Tube Ports I had to finish in this build using 3/4" MDF. The router’s variable speed was maxed at 6 to do this and there was plenty of power at that setting for my needs. All cuts and depths were perfect, the ports I used needed a 5-1/4” thru hole with a 6-1/4” round 3/16” recess which I’ve built a jig to use to do this. Where this router really impressed me was with cutting out the 2” rounds 5/16”recesses for the Speakon connectors that my jig couldn’t handle, too small for the jig. This left me with drawing the circles and free handing these with the router. This was a breeze mostly due to the LEDS that the router has and made it very easy for me to follow the lines with, my drops were perfect and I’m glad I bought the Round Sub Base for this. Another nice thing to note is that this kit came with a Dewalt soft case which isn’t advertised and something I really wanted, I didn’t want to carry it around in the box it comes in. I didn’t need the plunge base even though I could have used it if I had wanted too, but I did play with it and really like how it is sprung. It is setup to keep the router high off your material until you need to use the plunge feature. The travel is very smooth and precise with the ability to set your stop point, very nice! The only complaint I could consider would be power, this isn’t a 2 -1/2HP or more router and it can’t be to remain small enough for tight places and retain its ability to be easy to handle. If you need a little more power though in a compact router the Porter would be your better choice, which I also have, but with that it’s not as easy to control as this router is. There’s always a tradeoff to consider. Absolutely love this router

Well-designed light duty router; your second router rather than your first.
Style: Compact router
This is a well-designed, well-made tool. It's smaller and less powerful than a standard sized 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 HP router, so if you're buying your first router you should look elsewhere - the DeWalt 618, Bosch 1617, or Porter-Cable 690. The DeWalt 611 has a 1-1/4 HP motor and it's small enough to be held with one hand, but it only takes bits with a ¼" shaft, whereas a standard router will accept both 1/4" and 1/2" bits. If you use it with one hand, be sure to keep your other hand clear of the router bit. It's good for chamfering, rounding over edges, edging countertop laminate, and for trimming the stick-on facing used on the exposed edges of plywood. It might make shallow dados, but for any moderately heavy work it's better to use a standard two-handed router. Similarly, it wouldn't be sensible to mount the DeWalt 611 under a router table, because the lack of extra power would limit the depth and width of cuts. The design of the fixed base is similar to the Porter-Cable 690, which is a classic. The motor rotates inside the base like a big screw inside a big nut (the base). So it's easy to make fine adjustments up and down. A rotating collar lets you set zero and then rotate the motor to a specific depth. A locking collar holds the motor securely so that the bit stays at the desired depth. The adjustment mechanism probably makes it a better choice than the Bosch Colt trim router, with which it competes, and it has a couple of refinements vs. the Porter-Cable trim router, even though both brands are owned by the same corporation. The motor has a soft start, which makes it safer and easier to use as a hand-held tool. There's a shaft lock you hold so that you can tighten or loosen the bit with one wrench instead of two, and it works better than most router shaft locks. The wrench that was included (in Nov. 2014) was made from heavy gauge steel - heavier than the wrench included with the larger DeWalt 618. The plunge base included with the 611PK kit is well designed, with four turret stops and a threaded stop rod that can be used to make very fine depth adjustments, so it's suitable for doing marquetry and inlay work. You can orient the router in both the fixed and plunge bases with the cord facing toward you or away from you. The 611PK kit comes in a heavy duty nylon bag rather than in a hard case, which some reviewers complain about. I think it's fine as long as you don't fling it around. The only complaint I have is that the instructions are printed in 8 point type, which is just too small. That seems to be a corporate policy for Porter-Cable routers, and P-C owns DeWalt. Even the downloadable PDF manual uses tiny type, and if you enlarge it and print it at home, the image fuzzy. Bosch makes a much more readable instruction manual and DeWalt could learn from that.

This is a great compact, yet powerful, little router.
Style: Compact router
I just finished a loft bed for my daughter which included having to mortise the legs and rails to accept the rail mounting hardware. While the hardware worked great, it was a real pain to figure out how to mortise the long rails to accept the pin plate. It took about 45 minutes setting up my big PC router, for each ends of the 3 rails, and I ended up "hanging" it along the horizontal axis with a edge guide. Muscling that beast around while trying to make a precise cut began to make me regret my choice of hardware. Perhaps a pro would have had a better way to do it, and it turned out great, but I swore it will be a good while before I made another bed. My next project was to make a new table saw runoff table and that required plywood and applying Formica tops. After watching a couple of YouTube videos to get a feel for applying Formica, I noticed everyone had a compact router that just seemed to zip along. I decided to make the investment, and I sure wish I had it several projects ago. It seems powerful, the LEDs do a great job shedding light on the piece, and most of all, it is very maneuverable while still having enough weight to be stable. Kind of like a big dremel tool, it easily made it around both of the pieces, and hardly seemed to slow at all. Granted, I have only used it on trimming Formica to this point, but I have certainly resolved my mortising concern as I would be very confident this would do a great job with shallow mortises. The depth adjustment system seems very intuitive, but I have not yet used it or the plunge base (needless to say, I am looking forward to an opportunity). In all, I really like my purchase. My only regret is having waited so long . . . .

Stellar Router the DWP611PK 1.25Hp

I have to say that this router is really sweet! Ordered this little monster and had it 1.5 days later thanks to Amazon Prime! The item was very well packaged and very much complete. As soon as I opened the box and found the plug it went straight into the garage to the nearest outlet. Set the speed dial to 1 and pushed the rubber coated sealed switch and it started ever so beautifully and the twin LED lights on the bottom really pumped out some awesome vivid light! The speed dial is really smooth and holds position very well no moving or backing off despite higher RPMS it stays where u place it and there is no vibration that i can feel. If you run cheap poorly balanced router bits in any router you will feel vibration. However The 500+ pieces of 1/2in shank Tungsten Carbide and diamond tip bits I got from a local machine shop auction sale are pristine and this router makes them shine even more so. NOTE:The unit only comes with a 1/4inch Collet for 1/4 shank router bits. For smaller lighter woods and bits Id suggest using the smaller shank and this will do you just fine. But for larger Bits and dense materials, Id suggest using the thicker more true 1/2 collette and 1/2in shank router bits. While Carbide bits are more expensive 1/2in shanks are really the only way to go as it reduces the chance for flexing. Its compact lightweight and simple to use features and adjustments seriously make me very pleased that I did not order another large router. Its really easy to remove from its fixed base to the plunge base and the stability of both is really solid. Depth adjustment is a breeze and its very secure! At 1.25hp it has plenty of getup and go and because you can set the dial and control the rpms in a broad spectrum, its amazing for setting to whatever material you are cutting. I made several doors using solid red oak, aldar, maple, redwood and built a router table to hold it and man its an little monster. Ate right through everything! AWESOME! If you use cheap bits its still amazing however cheap bits make for cheap cuts and cheap results. If you are just starting out with routing do yourself a favor and try a really nice Freud Bit versus a Ryobi or Skil bit on a piece of pine and you will see what I mean. Its very smooth and fast! Id give this thing 10stars easy! Especially for the price!!! Cant beat this deal!

MOST EXCELLENT!!!

MOST EXCELLENT!!! Let me start out by saying that my progression into woodworking has only been for the last 2 years, and I buy tools as I need them. I am a single mom of 4 little ones and I'm trying to take care of things as best as I can... Which includes doing the traditional "dad" stuff. It started with wanting to make them a picnic table. So I bought a skill saw to go with my power drill and made saw horses to see if I could actually build anything. It worked! So I proceeded to make a great little kids picnic table (thanks to the great Ana White dot com building plans). Then my son wanted a loft bed, so I invested in a DeWalt 10" miter saw (Love it!) and we made his loft bed to his specifications. And the bug to build has taken over in me! I built steps down the steep hill in the back yard and a shed this summer..... And now on to new adventures with my new DeWalt compact router kit!!! In hopes to be a more self-sufficient artist, I have decided to take a crack at making my own frames. After much research and thinking, I decided a small router would work great..... And it does!! I received it in the mail today.... And by late tonight, after the kids went to bed, I made my first frame, which is sitting right next to me, glue drying. I bought an "L" groove bit to notch out the place where the glass and artwork sits- that is the routers job. Then I carefully measured and cut my pieces to size with the miter saw. I glued them with gorilla glue (which I bought because I liked the name of it and my kids liked the picture on the bottle LOL) and then I bought this great ratcheting band clamp by masterforce at Menards and clamped around it. Final touch was using my power shot stapler and reinforced the joint with 1/2 inch staples. -the joining seams look great, and I have a perfect shelf to set the glass in. -for you experts out there, I know this is so elementary. But for those starting out, I want you to know that this router was so easy and intuitive to pick up and use, having never used one before! So easy to stick the bit in, and it handled wonderfully! The guys at the hardware store tried to scare me a bit with the idea that it would "run away" from me in my hands (I was looking at the regular sized ones). But after looking at Many models, reading reviews, and watching utube videos of them in use, I chose this DeWalt, and Amazon had a great price and offer. I look forward to my accessories coming tomorrow. I think it will be really great to have the dust attachment. I was surely covered in sawdust, and I definitely want to keep that to a minimum as I'm running it in the basement and don't want my kids to my breathe it in. I am so excited to see how my use of this great tool will evolve as I think of new ways to use it. I love it!

Very nice tool

As a weekend warrior, I have been coveting a router for several years but was hesitant to take the plunge (pun intended), as I just was not sure what I needed (e.g., classic fixed-base like the PC 690 or fixed/plunge kit? D- handle? Ability to accommodate 1/2" shank bits which are more widely available than 1/4" bits? Full-size router or compact, etc...?) Finally, a recent project I am working on warranted a purchase. I always eyed the Bosch Colt as I love Bosch tools and felt that a compact router would probably (hopefully) suffice for my needs, but the Colt seems to have some issues based on reviews. So after a lot of research, I decided on the DWP 611. Despite some reviewers suggesting that a compact router is not a good first router, I respectfully disagree -- for my purposes I am extremely happy with my purchase of the DWP 611. This is a very high quality tool that is very managable and safe -- and safety for me was a key consideration when purchasing a router as I am newbie (although not unskilled). I like everything about this tool incluidng the one-wrench bit changing system, simple fixed-base height adjustment ring, ample power for my needs, good ergonomics, smoothe and reliable plunge base action, and yes, even the soft case which is better than I expected. So why only 4 stars? Not that this is a deal breaker, but I find the depth adjustment mechanism on the plunge base a little sloppy -- it's very difficult to adjust cut depths within exact tolerances (say 1/16") because the "depth adjustment rod" is not threaded to dial-in an exact cut depth; rather, you have to slide the depth adjustment rod up to match a cut depth on a ruler, and then lock the rod by tightening a thumb screw. In this process there is some play which prohibits exact depth addjustment (but is close enough for my purposes). My other gripes are the sealed rocker switch is difficult to turn on and off, and I do not see what the big deal is about the LED lights (and I DO like LED's on my cordless drill). But for my purposes, this router is more than capable and I am very pleased with my purchase.

After much deliberation I picked this one over similar compact Bosch and Makita. I liked Makita's lightness and elegance and Bosch's soft grip and lightness, but this one attracted me by LED lighted clear base, solid look, good price for a combo set with carry-on zipped bag, the last drop being currently a best seller on Amazon (go with the crowd:)). While Bosch's weight and grip would be easier on my arthritis I did not get it square base, and while Makita has a neat small round base it is not match to a lighted clear base of DW. I don't see much use for the original half-squared base the fixed base has besides that some could appreciated to finger-press on to square side while let the round one glide against the guide, so I bought a round base DNP613, put it on and probably won't take it off, ever. Besides the advantage of not to think which side to ride along the guide, this one has a smaller opening to fit standard template guides perfectly (the square one is useless for that". Wish that the round one was included in the kit as standard but that probably would make DW less money, shame. So far I used the fixed base for rounding over edges and the plunge base for carving design/inlay with the help of, bought at the same time, Milescraft 1207 Router Design Inlay Kit and Whiteside 9500 Solid Brass Inlay Kit. At the beginning the plunge base gave me a little scare, appear like sticking/jamming a couple of times, maybe my getting use to it, but looks working smoothly now. Happy overall with this guy, no need to pull out heavier Bosch B1450 for lighter jobs.

Excellent router! Couldn't desire more!

Top quality router, highly recommend. Very easy to work with, intuitive and easy snaps and clamps, good quality cord, very convenient handles and transparent sub-plate — so good to finally see what I'm doing! And having fixed AND plunge bases in one kit — it's amazing for the money! The weight (I can operate with it single-handed!), size (on fixed base it can be conveniently held with just one palm) and power of this router is amazing — I flipped it over for a DIY router table — and it is very good even with large bits! Variable speed — you'll love it! Many trimming routers don't have it, but I sometimes use large bits and this is a must have for them, as you have to use lower speed to avoid burning. Be aware that fixed base has a standard "D" sub-plate, which hole doesn't accommodate standard 1-3/16" bushings, you'll have to buy a round plate replacement for this. But the round plate is quite small, making the footprint (and stability) is even smaller, so I just use the plunge base, which accommodates the bushings natively. Also be aware that this router doesn't have a vacuum attachment — you have to buy them separately. Both bases have their own attachments, so be prepared to pay, like, 6-8 additional dollars for each, if you are going to use the vacuum. The only con I can think of — the standard "D" sub plate (fixed base) and the replacement round one are quite small and you have to be careful holding the router flat to the table — but plunge base doesn't have this issue, it's much larger and sturdier. Highly recommend this router to anyone!
