  • Excellent tool with a few considerations
Bought this to polish our two cars - one is a traditional slick black paint and is 4 years old - the finish had lots of fine scratching from automatic car washing (no, I'm not the type to hand wash...I know it's better, but I just don't have the time). The other car is 6 months old and has a nice factory finish and I wanted to keep it bright and shiny. So far, this tool has done well. My brief observations are: The tool is heavy duty - it runs continuously with no problem and can handle reasonably heavy loads. I wouldn't quite call it commercial grade but it is very close to it. The average pro working on cars will unlikely tap the tool's potential. The tool does heat up after continuous use - it doesn't blow hot air from the cooling fan on the user, but there are a couple of metal spots on the body of the tool that get hot - the handles are fine but if you grab the body of the tool to set it down or pick it up, you won't get burned but it will get your attention. The soft start feature is nice, but there is one quirk: Pulling the trigger too rapidly causes the tool to overshoot the targeted RPM. When the spindle is just starting, the constant RPM feature appears to adjust input voltage or current to maintain the RPM based on the user's input into the trigger. Pull the trigger a little too fast and the tool ramps up the power rather fast - if the tool isn't under load, the spindle will spin too fast and gradually settle into the target RPM. This isn't a big deal as any reasonable user will find the modulation perfect for polishing - but if your finger slips or you accidentally goose the trigger while using it, the tool will respond with a big jump in power. That can catch you off guard a little if you don't anticipate it. The tool has some logic in it - the trigger is more "fly by wire" than a traditional trigger. That's a good thing, but you have to re-train yourself a little to get the most out of it. The tool is pretty quiet - it operates nice and smooth and at a reasonable sound level. Weight it a tad heavy - if you use it all day long there is a trade-off between weight and the durability of the tool. I think this one is just right for how it is positioned, but the average joe will definitely notice his/her arms if you use it for a few hours and haven't done so before. Not a big deal, but it is worth noting. The power cord is nice and beefy - no worries there. The wool/lint filter for the cooling air intakes is a nice touch. The nose end with the loop-style handle attached is a little tight when polishing around outside mirrors and a few other places, but overall the tool provides good clearances all around. I'm not familiar with similar offerings from Porter Cable, but it looks like there are only a few big names that make a comparable polisher - I wouldn't think you will be displeased with any of them. I have owned a number of DeWalt power tools over the years and this one is on par with the quality you expect from them, if not better. ... show more

  • Good Buffer
Works well for when I need a buffer. Usually use it when I re-do the ceramic coating on my car once a year. Just helps me get the job done easier.

  • Top-Notch Dewalt Polisher Worth Every Penny
This Dewalt polisher truly embodies the saying, "You get what you pay for." While it may not be the most budget-friendly option, its quality justifies the cost. The impeccable construction and finish reflect superior craftsmanship. One standout feature is its weight - heavy enough to eliminate the need for manual pressure, allowing for effortless guiding. The pad size is just perfect, not too small or too large. Moreover, the heavy-duty electrical cord is sufficiently long, unlike cheaper alternatives with shorter cords that can be inconvenient. Overall, I highly recommend this polisher for its exceptional performance and design. ... show more

  • Worth buying. Solid machine.
This is a good solid machine. My shop produces high performance concrete products. We mainly use this polisher to grind the rough backsides of castings back with a stock removal wheel. This is hard on a grinder/polisher and depending on the size of the project it can take two or three hours of grinding. We've burned out many weaker grinders over time. Based on how this Dewalt feels and has performed so far I'm expecting a long service life from it. Pros: Good torque/power. Great speed range. Soft start. Good balance and weight. Good placement of the trigger, lock, & speed controls. Cons: It can bounce if you're not careful when using a small wheel. It needs a standard collar at the base of the arbor. If it weren't for this I would give it five stars. It is small and smooth preventing the attachment of any dust extraction shrouds but their own. Their shroud is inferior. It is opaque, expensive, and most important NOT adjustable. Different pads, wheels, and attachments have different heights. If you are just polishing this will not matter to you. For grinding concrete this is vital to personal safety. There is at least one company I saw at the World of Concrete this year that makes an adapter for the collar so they can accept standard grinder attachments. I lost their brochure and have not been able to find them yet. Until I find them or a better solution I have removed the black plastic guard and wrapped several layers of Gorilla Duct Tape around the collar for my Dust Buddy shroud to bite into. This is temporary and must be readjusted if you grind so long that the heat builds up and softens the adhesive. It would be so easy for them to just build this with the same standard collar that goes on every angle grinder they make. ... show more
