  • Don't look back...
Style: Speaker
A new listening experience. I lived with two Mission 732s as front speakers and a 12 inch Velodyne Subwoofer for approximately 20 years. I also had 2 Polk Audio bookshelves and a Polk center channel for surround all powered by a Yamaha RX-V575. I had really good sound (i thought) and was very satisfied... I visited a friend who had 20 year old Definitive Technology BP-10s and was blown away. The difference between my sound and those DTs was astounding. I started shopping around and found the latest series of DT Bi-Polars. The price tag was hefty but I figured you only live once and music was always a passion for me so I decided to make the plunge. I spent some time researching the available components. DT had 3 models that caught my eye; BP-9040s, BP-9060s, and BP-9080s. After a budget review and reading reviews by others I decided on the BP-9060s, I also included the matching Center Speaker (CS-9060) and the SR and SL-9040 Surrounds (they did not make 9060 Surrounds). The price you see is the price you pay for these. So it was either pay the rent or buy the speakers (not really that bad, but close). All were beautifully packaged and arrived in perfect condition. I took a day off work to get everything hooked up. There are a few things that you need to be very careful with when handling these speakers. First of all they are very heavy. Secondly, they are covered with a thin cloth. There is nothing between the Speaker cone and the cloth. In other words there is no hard speaker cover just the very thin cloth. There are speakers on the front and both sides of these.Additionally, the center channel Speaker speakers are on the front and the top so you cannot put anything on top of it. Don't let any clumsy or drunk friends near these. Handle with extreme care. The Front Speakers are only 6 inches wide so space shouldn't be an issue however, they come with stands that are 11 inches wide so you need some clearance at the bottom. The BP-60s are almost 45 inches high and a foot deep. The center channel is heavy as well. It measures 21 inches wide, 6 inches high and a foot deep. I can't stress enough to handle with care. I also, upgraded my speaker cables to the best I could afford. You don't want to have to move these around too much. Each Speaker with the exception of the surrounds have powered subwoofers so you need a source of power for each. There are independent controls on the back of the Speakers for the subs. I turned them each up to 9 o'clock. Once everything was hooked up it was time to decide what to play first. I chose Pink Floyd's Animals (always one of my favorites). I turned off my Subwoofer to hear what these could do. I turned up the Yamaha about halfway at first. Needless to say the speakers reproduced the sound like it was intended to hear. I've been listening to this album since high school. I graduated in 1980. For the first time I heard things I never heard before. Impeccable! My Dogs started barking like crazy during the break. We were all enjoying the new sound. Although you don't have to turn the volume way up to experience the sound reproduction, I experimented with the volume on the next track (PIGS) and turned the Yamaha way up. I could tell that these speakers could handle the volume. The bass reproduction rattled the windows. If you put your hand in front of the subwoofer it is pumping out air that you could dry your hair with. No distortion, clear and clean highs and a superb separation that filled the room with sound. If you close your eyes you cannot tell where the sound is coming from. I also enjoy listening to a lot of live music especially the Grateful Dead and if you have a good recording you're at the show. A lousy recording will sound lousy. I eventually hooked up the surrounds and turned on my sub. You don't need a separate subwoofer but if you have one you may have to change the crossover frequency so that it only responds to the real lows. I watched an Avengers movie in surround and it was spectacular. I'm not a big movie watcher but if you are you will not be disappointed. I recommend these to anyone who appreciates sound like I do if you can afford the price tag. I believe that these will last a life time and are worth the money. I'm thinking about upgrading the Yamaha eventually. Happy consumer. ... show more

  • My music life is now complete....
Style: Speaker
I bought a pair of B&W 600 anniversary series (L & R) and a CS9060 center channel last year. It was a big step up. This year I bought four BP 9060s and replaced the B&W with a pair and used the other pair for surrounds. I have to say I was doubtful about the rear firing aspect, because I am very particular about imaging and clarity. But having run these for a week, everything I ever wanted in premium sound is now in my listening space! Well done, Def Tech! ... show more

  • Well worth the money
Style: Speaker
I have owned an older pair of Definitive DB-7s for quite some time. When the midrange speaker needed recoiling, I decided to upgrade. I went back and forth as to the model and finally decided to go with the 9060s because they allow adding the top surround speakers, and the 12 inch woofers would have probably annoyed my neighbors. I'm running these with a subwoofer, a center speaker and two studio monitors on the other side of the room for surround. These 1060s are crisp and clear. I was really blown away. They are narrower than the DB-7s but produce a better sound. And I didn't think I'd like the aluminum base, but it looks fine and adds some stability. All in all, these are expensive but if you really love your music and want to hear more depth and clarity than the wireless options everyone is talking about, this is a good "old-school" investment and should bring hours of music enjoyment. ... show more

  • Expensive but crazy sounding.
Style: Speaker
These speakers arre fantastic. I would recommend going the extra mile and buy the height speaker as well. The way these speakers are built you should really get the full matching 9000 set from definitive technology to include front, center, rear. To do this is expensive but you only live once and if you want theater quality in your house, this will do it. You can not use these speakers on a low price surround receiver. You will spend 1500 plus for the proper receiver to run this speaker properly. I used a Yamaha 3080 reciever and it cost me 2000. With a set of these no subwoofer is needed as it has 2 passive radiators and a subwoofer in the speaker already. Plenty of base for sure. Big investment here but if ya want crazy theater sound in your house so you don't need to go to the movies anymore...this is what you need to buy. ... show more

  • Speakers 'Pop' when Entering Stand-by Mode
Style: Speaker
Called DefTech in which they advised my brand new Pioneer receiver was the issue. Both towers pop when entering stand-by mode (turning off). Center channel is the CS9060 also from DefTech, which also has a built in subwolfer, yet no pops from this one. Still awaiting company to contact me back regarding exchanging these for towers whose internal amps ARE functional. Outside of this defect, the speakers are sick and seemingly worth the money. Just want ones that don't pop so they have longevity and don't scare the dog during quiet time. ... show more

Edited Review: My first review was 5 stars - superb sound quality and volume My revision was 1 star - subs emitted loud popping noises every time I shut them off - that is until they failed entirely on both left and right channel - known defect that DT doesn't really acknowledge. Hopefully final revision - received replacement amps after waiting about a month - Covid is no doubt partially responsible for the delay. Had to install them myself - easy enough for a tech enthusiast with a metric set of allen wrenches and a pair of plyers; would scare someone not used to working on electronics. Sounds great once again, no popping either overall, I want to give it 3.5 stars but I rounded down because one would expect not to have these issues with products at this price range. Will still consider buying a center and surround set to round out the system for 5.2.0 ... show more
