Description

Perfect for Children Ages 5-7!Spunky, spirited Decibella loves to be loud. Maybe that’s why her name is Decibella? She shouts every time she answers a question, offers an opinion, shares a thought, or makes a request. It doesn’t matter if she’s sitting in a classroom, browsing for books in the library, ordering food in a restaurant, or watching a movie in the theater. Her voice volume is always on full blast. Decibella is so loud, she’s hurting ears, startling wait staff, disrupting classmates, and annoying moviegoers. She doesn’t realize different environments and situations sometimes demand a softer, quieter voice. That is until a caring teacher introduces her to the silly-sounding word “Slurpadoodle” and the five volumes of voice (Whisper, 6-inch, Table Talk, Strong Speaker, and Outside). With a little practice, patience, and persistence, can Decibella become a voice volume expert? Or will her volume be permanently stuck on shout? A special page written specifically for parents and educators offers insightful and practical strategies to help children understand when and how to have a proper voice volume. Fans of the original story will find more inclusive, empathetic, and empowering dialogue and situations in this revised second edition! Read more

  • Decibella is effective
I work as a BA (behavioral assistant), which means I work spend a lot of time working with kids. Some of them find it difficult to manage their voice levels, and communicate effectively. I purchased Decibella as I hoped that I could use it In my sessions with some of my younger youth and that it would help me show them proper ways to communicate. I have to say that my one youth in particular LOVED this book. We read it several times, and as we read it we practiced the different voice levels. She loved this book so much that she asked to borrow it and kept it for 2 weeks! In addition there are plenty of art activities on pintrest that you can look up to go along with the book, which we did, and I was able to keep my youth engaged in the topic by extending the projects into another session, which also helped us focus on the topic a bit longer. I highly recommend this book for any one who is working with children, or has children that struggle with proper communication. ... show more

  • Fantastic book
This author was recommended for another one of my non neurotypical kiddo, but I saw this title and thought it would be perfect for my son with ADHD. Voice control is definitely a challenge for him. I read this book to him and his younger brother (7 and 5). We now have great vocabulary for voice level and appropriate timing. I find myself often asking for "six inch voice". I can't wait to read the other books by this author. ... show more

  • A Valuable Volume Teaching Tool!
Format: Paperback
I used this book to teach kindergarten students about using our inside voice. It breaks down various levels of volume in a funny and easy to understand way. It is a little long for those with shorter attention spans, but my students loved it. The book came in excellent shape with no creases or damage. ... show more

  • Great book, but a bit long
Read this book to my second grade class and it was great at explaining voice levels. However, the book was very long and even my most engaged students were bored by the end.

  • Volume level book
Format: Paperback
I read this to my class. It was a well written book. This lead to conversation about levels outside, working with peer, working independently as well as reading aloud. I only hope my students continue to remember volume levels throughout the year.

  • Good message for kids (and adults too)!
Julia Cook has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I am a teacher and I believe she has the most perfect books to help with classroom management. I hope to continue to build my collection of her books to use throughout the school year. They are a meaningful, fun, engaging way to help communicate a message to young children. This book talks about the importance of various noise levels not only in the classroom, but every where! ... show more
