Description

The Holley carburetor is an icon in the performance industry. Thirty, forty, even fifty years ago, if you looked under the hood of any modified or performance car, you more than likely would discover a Holley carburetor lurking there. Often, many enthusiast's first modification is swapping out the factory induction system for a new Holley 4-barrel carb and intake manifold. While many of today's modern cars have moved past carburetors and into high- tech fuel-injection systems, most cars from the highly collectible eras are still running carburetors. Carbs are comparatively inexpensive, highly tunable, and do not require laptops, expensive tuning equipment, or computers to function. And by far, the most popular carb still in use is the Holley carb. In David Vizard's How to Super Tune and Modify Holley Carburetors, best selling author Vizard explains the science, the function, and most important, the tuning expertise required to get your Holley carburetor to perform its best for your performance application, whether it's street, strip, supercharging, or race applications. Holley has been a best-selling subject for years, and this much-needed update guides you through the traditional 4150 Double Pumper, Dominator, and 4160 vacuum secondary models, as well as all the recent releases from Holley, including the Ultra Street Avenger and Ultra HP Series Carbs. With its high degree of tuning ease, and with all the new models coming into the market, the knowledge of an expert like Vizard is a requirement to meet your performance goals, now more than ever. This book is an essential addition to any hot rodder's library. Read more

  • Comprehensive Tuning advice for Holley Carburetors
The step-by-step approach described in this book walks the tuner through the steps to adjust each stage of the carburetor, the idle stage, the transition stage, and beyond. The perspective is original to this publication, I found it to be very helpful in the process. The author David Vizard references situations from his personal experience in tuning, which I also found to be helpful. He is a very respected Authority in the Automotive world with videos on YouTube and other publications. I highly recommend this book! ... show more

  • Read it if you like carbs of any sort
Vizard’s books are good, he is thoughtful and thorough. First one I read was about the British Leyland ‘L’ series engine, used in the (real) mini, and many other small brit cars. I don’t like those cars much, but the book was excellent. Informative and entertaining. Learn from it and adapt to your brand. This one is the same way- read it to improve your carb understanding, whether or not Holleys are your thing. I have never owned a 4 bbl Holley, but they are common and serve as a good example....something to learn about, develop an understanding, and apply where needed. If this doesn’t sound good, you can stick to adjusting idle speed or replacing the air filter. This is a person who thinks hard about why things work how they do, and how to make them better. Also, about what might be “how its always been done” but doesn’t really work. His suggested ideas are backed up with testing, not some silly anecdotal evidence. That method of supporting ones opinion is, sadly, common in this sort of book, but Mr. Vizard doesn’t do that. I can’t imagine the time he’s spent learning what went into this and the other books. Just so you know- It isn’t step by step instructions for one application, or a service or parts manual. I do wish that manifold pressures were given in psi absolute rather than vacuum, but power valves etc. are sold by opening vacuum....most of us live below 1000 ft. msl...I guess it works. It doesn’t take away from an excellent book. ... show more

  • Don’t put this book in the garage...read it on the couch
I bought this book not really expecting much as I’ve had decent success tuning Holley carbs in the past simply using the information available from Holley and the Internet. After reading it a lot of “why” questions I had about these carbs were no longer a mystery. The book covers MUCH more than Holley carb tuning too thankfully. The book merged all of the important tuning aspects that directly impacts the carb’s tune such as: ignition timing, intake manifold selection, cam profiles, and head flow. And this isn’t done in the generic way manufacturers market there products. This book provides incredibly detailed explanations on why these different components are used and or tuned the way that they are. Even better still is the countless dyno grace h comparisons of different combinations, showing the affect of each individual component selection and tune. The book gives MANY different tuning methods too. Each method of tuning is discussed, evaluated, and then demonstrated. What this book isn’t: it is not a complete replacement for the standard tuning guide included with all Holley carburetors. These carbs simply aren’t that complex and the instructions alone are more than ample to get you going. This book does have complete tuning procedures however because it includes lengthy explanations along side the instructions it’s not practical to have this book opened up under the hood of an idling car. There is no itemized list of tuning steps, you have to read closely. This book really answers the “why” questions a carb tuner might have. It does also answer the “how” questions too just not quickly. ... show more

  • Great book on how Holley's work...
I was hoping that this book would help me rebuild my carb, but not so much. What it did do was help me understand how a Holley works and what can be done to tune the carburetor. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the Power Valves and their respective sizes. I understand that it's related to manifold vacuum, but still trying to figure out how it works. The book goes into detail about the air bleeds, different booster styles, and also modifications that can be done to get more CFM flow out of your carb that doesn't even require boring out out. All it takes is improving the air flow through the carb. If you're looking for a book to help you rebuild your carb while making modifications along the way, then this isn't it. If you're looking for a book that helps you really understand how a Holley works and how to get the most out of your Holey, then this is it. This book would be great as a supplement to other literature that details the steps required to rebuild your Holley. As for me, I had troubles with my Holley and that's why I bought this book. I temporarily replaced the 759 double pumper with an Edelbrock. It's running better, but I'm still wanting to go back to a Holley eventually. Maybe.... ... show more

  • Lot's of great detail by a results based master engine builder
A great deal of technical detail based on real measurements and years of detailed research and development. Gives you a way of effectively tuning and designing your carburetor based fuel system based on facts, rather than guesses. Little details I simply never understood are explained in detail, expanding ability to fine tune designing a Holley carburetor based fuel system (with relevant information concerning all carburetors). Both theory and design detail are provided. A deep dive into more complete understanding. ... show more

  • Excellent book for learning the potential of not only Holley ...
Excellent book for learning the potential of not only Holley carburetors, but many of the top of the line carbs too. This book is not a step-by-step book, but more of a book that explains by doing certain things to your carb the results that you can expect. It also goes through much of what a carb does in your car. Great pictures and tons of great information. It reads like a book, but it is laid out like a magazine (I hope that makes sense). Great book. ... show more
