I bought this as a review of electronics while preparing for an advanced ham radio license. It was far more thana review. The technical detail and depth of information is amazing. Each section breaks out a portion of electronics knowledge from basic electricity, to formulas for calculating power, voltage, resistance, current, impedance, reactance, wavelength, circuit Q and dozens of other calculations necessary to completely understand electricity and electronics. The volumes are laid out from basics to incredibly detailed and complex subject. A beginner could start with volume 1 and learn as much about electronics as desired. Most amateur radio operators are already aware of the value of the ARRL Amateur Radio Handbook. I have handbooks for 1947, 1973, 1995, and 1999. One does not need to buy them every year, but only occasionally to keep up with current technology. It is also a great reference to learn electronics in general. (Older editions will let you go back to learning older technologies like vacuum tubes - "valves" if your British - and audio is audio whether radio transceivers or guitar amplifiers.) I particularly like the 100th edition format, where major subjects are divided into volumes. It is much easier to physically handle a smaller book when studying or working on a project. BTW - it is less expensive buying the ARRL Handbook through Amazon than the ARRL! ... show more

Don’t normally do this for Amazon but had to for this. Watching TV the other night and got a call from Andy at Pacific Prime 1. Almost didn’t answer it but glad I did. He called to let me know that the picture of what I ordered was wrong and if what he had was OK. I preferred what he had anyway. Got it today and, Oh My God. It was the hard cover one. I'm fairly new to Amateur Radio, so I'm always looking for reference and instructional material about the hobby/service. This six-volume set from ARRL is now the core of my Ham Radio library. When I have a question about anything Ham-related, the Handbook is where I turn first.

    • Still a great resource and an invaluable guide, but not the print quality they used to be.

My husband was overdue for a handbook, decided to order him a set, rather than the single book - decision was made on feedback about the single book being printed on bible paper, and using too small of a font in the printing process. I'm happy to say this "set" edition is printed of regular weight book paper, just as the Handbook has been for years, including all the previous ones in his collection going back to the 1980's. Unfortunately, despite the paper improvment, print size in this set lives up to the single-book reviews. Sadly, it is printed in 9pt font size, whereas older editions were printed in a larger typeface, usually 10pt or 11pt, and thus much easier to read. I know a single ISO-size point doesn't seem like much, but we're talking the entire reference book, not a quoted inset paragraph. The third thing he noticed about this edition versus previous one he owns, the images are muddy and no longer sharp/crisp. Photos in this edition look like they are poorly graywashed color pictures sent to a b/w printer, not quality black and white (or even color photos properly retoned as b/w) images screen-ready for grayscale printing. It is disappointing that a reference book so highly regarded among Amateur Radio circles is being reduced to text that can't be easily read without enlargement. My opinion, and I think I speak for many others who are frustrated with paying more and getting less, I'd rather pay more and get the quality expected. It is even worse that production of such books is geared toward online/ebook readers as the priority, forgetting their primary market buys hard copies for reference use, and both versions of a book can coexist peacefully. Do I recommend this book? Yes, but unless you want information on the latest modes, an earlier edition might serve you just as well, if not better, when it comes to the basics ARRL's Handbook is known for. ... show more

As I’ve said before, if you are going to buy just one book on electronics / radio technology, this would be it - covers all necessary topics to a surprising depth with one MAJOR improvement - it has been broken up into several smaller volumes instead of one rather heavy and cumbersome single volume. I have been an amateur radio operator since 1960 and have purchased many prior issues of the ARRL Radio Handbook. This one is a continuation of the traditional electronic fact and theory book with updated sections keeping up with the latest changes in electronics and radio. Still something that a person with a new interest in the radio hobby or the profession of radio and electronics could and would use on a regular basis to learn theory and construct a radio station.
