Description

New York Times Bestseller Escape to Stony Point, cuff your jeans and walk along the water's edge in this nostalgic story bringing old friends, and their lives, back to the sea. After years of pursuing a denim design career, Maris Carrington never imagined trading her Chicago studio for a New England shingled cottage. But a forgotten home movie tucked inside a dusty attic box leads to an unexpected summer ... One of uncovering family secrets while settling her father's estate, one of inheriting a forlorn German shepherd, one of reconnecting with old friends on a weathered boardwalk, beneath starlit skies on a beach nestled in a crook of the Connecticut coast. Her design career had become a shell, curving around her like the intricate whorls of a conch, shielding her until now. Until fried clam dinners and carousel rides beckon a lost love. But can Maris ever really go back? Can these beach friends ever be who they were to each other all those summers ago? Now one of her circle is dead; another unemployed and struggling in a tenuous marriage; another regretting a fateful decision; while one is missing a mother, ever seeking a connection she longs for. To the backdrop of seaside cottages and a boarded up beach hangout, to the soundtrack of whispering lagoon grasses and a vintage jukebox, Blue Jeans and Coffee Beans asks if we can really design our own lives, or if our fate lies somewhere in the stars. • Amazing....
My first book by this author. Much deeper than some other recent books because I had to really think about each scenario and try to imagine where she was going with the story. I’d started this book 2 or 3 times before, but could not get into the storyline. This time, as a turn each page, I became engaged in the story, the lives and history of each character, and then, I’ve been unable to put it down and now I feel so connected to these people, to Maris and her journey for what is missing in her life and all the other People in this book who seem so real now. I’m hooked. I’ll be thinking about this story for a long time, and may reread it now that I know where it ended, to understand the beginning better. Great read! ... show more

  • Easy read that keeps you wondering
I enjoyed reading the first book of the series. The characters were interesting and relatable. I could have done without the language but it was not too bad or I would not have read it. I skip over those words anyway.

  • The short beach version of real life
Blue Jeans and Coffee BeansBlue Jeans and Coffee Beans is a book to read in one or two sittings. It would be disrespectful to the history, quandaries, questions, mysteries and dreams of the characters Joanne has created. It would be a travesty to let this book languish for days or weeks between short reading sessions. My advice: don't begin unless you have the time to read this novel in no more than two sittings. Joanne leaves nothing to our imagination except picturing ourselves walking the beach, gazing at the stars, contemplating designing or redecorating a beach cottage, wearing Maris' designs, falling in love under the summer sky, battling real-life demons and hungering for our deepest dreams. In true "show and tell" format, Joanne paints a striking picture of life in Stony Point. And though writing a novel is no day at the beach, Joanne's writing seems effortless and seamless. She sets the background for each scene and each phase for the complex but interesting lives of her true-to-life characters. At a glance we may think that their lives are far removed from ours. Yet, as we wade into the complex story of each character, elements of our own life stories wash ashore. Their lives: love, loss, joy, pain, troubles, questions, revelations, dreams could easily be ours. In fact, on some level, they reflect our lives: love, loss, joy, pain, troubles, questions, revelations, dreams. Yes, Joanne DeMaio has created a work of fiction but what she also did is prove that art imitates life. In real life, it takes more than 314 pages to find answers to our questions, to allay our fears, to men broken hearts, to heal our long-festering wounds, to achieve our dreams. But Joanne gives us hope that if we open our hearts, ask the difficult questions, face the harsh truths and don't give up on our dreams, we too can find love, joy and fulfillment in our own version of the Stony Point experience - the short version of real life. ... show more

  • Beautifully Written
Why? I read a review at some time on Laurel Rain's blog - one of the books Joanne DeMaio wrote and I decided to try one. Now this is the second book I have read by this author. Plot It is set in Stony Point, New England and is the story of three women and three men. Each with their own life challenges at this point in time. Maris keeps taking on then off her engagement ring. Eva longs to know her real birth mother, Lauren doesn't want what she has. Jason is still dealing with grief, Kyle can't seem to make his wife happy and Matt is annoyed by Eva's addictive search for her mother. What Appeals to me? It is beautifully written, the seaside is very much present. Yes its a beach read but it is so much more as the characters struggle with their issues. Yet there are strong supportive ties among them. And there is some healing. And so... There are more books about these characters - at least two, maybe three so I am very keen to continue on and read the next one The Denim Blue Sea. ... show more

  • Enjoyable
The setting is the Connecticut coast and a group of thirtysomethings still finding their way in the adult world. The characters are nice enough, although sometimes there are too many of them to keep track of. As I like to alternate light reading with more complex material, I found this enjoyable and light. The characters were all likable people with relatable problems. The plot was rather predictable, but believable enough. One thing I didn't like was how Eva's yearning for a birth mother led her to steal and there was no resolution for her behavior when even her cop husband finds out. This was because she wasn't the leading character and the book was ending by then. Most of the descriptive text was appropriately pleasant, although by the end I thought enough about the stars and sea already. If you like a light beach read this is a good choice, but don't expect a profound message in the story. ... show more

  • It made me cry so a great book!
I've stated before in my reviews, I judge a book by it's cover, then the title then I read what it is about. I liked the cover and the title of this book and I really liked the story. The characters were well written so you moved through the story with them and felt their emotions. My favorite characters in this particular story were Kyle and Jason, I think of all the characters they were the most dimensional, with Eve being the least fleshed out, but it as a testament to how well this book is written, Neil who was dead at the beginning of the story was so much a part of the other characters' lives that when Jason talked about the day Neil died you had to cry because even though Neil wasn't one of the living characters you were very attached to him based on the tidbits of his life you were given. I always love books with a water setting and this book gives you the beachy descriptions that I enjoy. This was a very good read to me and I look forward to more of Ms. Demaio's books. ... show more
