Great budget keybaord so far
Color: Black Keyboard layout: QWERTY
Solid keyboard for the price, especially if you are coming from a problematic board and just need something that works reliably. + Keys feel good, and after 40 years of using every kind of keyboard I am not easily impressed + No double typing issues, which was the whole reason I needed a new board + RGB is well implemented and the software lets you set your own custom layout and color scheme + Hall effect magnetic switches are a nice technology upgrade over traditional mechanical switches + Rapid trigger and adjustable actuation are great features for gamers, even if I am not using them to their full potential - No numpad, worth thinking twice about if you rely on one, I knew going in since this will eventually live on a server where a lighted keyboard matters more than a numpad - Has some AI features in the software I have not touched, not a con exactly but not a selling point either Good value hall effect keyboard that just gets out of the way and does its job. Will update after it gets more mileage. ... show more

Interesting AI concept, but implementation is problematic
Color: Black Keyboard layout: QWERTY
TL;DR: This is the longest review I've ever written on this platform. I got a bit carried away. However, there's a whole lot going on with this "AI keyboard." Some of it is very cool, some of it is very lame, and some of it is kind of troubling. I cover each aspect in depth below, but the upshot is this: if you're a fan of all things AI and don't mind creating an account and possibly spending real money to generate intricate RGB effects and keystroke rules/macros, then this is a fun product. If all that sounds like a bit too much, then you should pass on this. In terms of just basic keyboard performance separate from the app's customization options, the writing experience is fast and smooth, and the HE switches are responsive. It's worth the asking price, but it might not be worth however much more this thing is going to cost in the long run. FULL REVIEW: The Flux 84 keyboard from DarkBeacon has several things going for it and several things going against it. It's a massive mixed bag, basically. All keyboards have their quirks and compromises, but this one is unlike any other mechanical RGB or "gaming" keyboard I've ever used (and I've used plenty). First, I want to discuss the positives. Becase as I said, there are several positives. The layout is more or less a standard 85% layout. I has everything but the numpad, basically. It's a compact tenkeyless (TKL) setup. If you use a numpad frequently, this isn't the board for you, but I don't use numpads at all, and the only full-sized keyboards I own—that is, the only typing instruments I own that AREN'T tenkeyless—are my old 1990s IBM Model M keyboards (which I don't even use anymore because even inexpensive modern mechanicals are smoother, faster, way less loud and obnoxious, and take up much less desk space). This keyboard is wired, which might be a negative for some users, but which also makes it as plug-and-play as possible. The included cable (USB-A-to-USB-C) allows for wide compatibility with older machines, but the device will also work with a USB-C-to-USB-C cable if you're limited to USB-C ports on your computer or dock. The typing experience is fast, smooth, and reasonably comfortable. I am typing this entire review using the Flux 84, and it’s been enjoyable enough despite the keyboard having no adjustable feet. The Flux 84 uses hot-swappable Hall Effect (HE; magnetic actuation) key switches, and while they're different from the other standard mechanical switch types (linear, tactile, and clicky), they're closest in feel to linear switches. The keycaps are also made of a translucent black plastic, which allows for the RBG effects to really pop in a way that you only get with tanslucent or transparent keycaps. The sound profile of this mechanical keyboard is decent. It's not very muted in the way many people might like (that is, it's not very "thocky"), but it's also not very clicky. It's somewhere in between. I think this will be suitable for a wide range of applications and user tastes. Of course, keyboard sound is totally subjective, and YMMV. The keyboard seems solidly built despite its all-plastic construction. It's pretty lightweight, but for its $45-ish price point, this is basically par for the course re what you should reasonably expect, materials-wise. Finally, the keyboard—with its companion app—is really easy to customize in all kinds of interesting ways, especially if you're running something like AutoHotkey. The RGB effects are especially flexible and interesting. These use a generative AI implentation whereby you explain in a prompt how you want your RGB effects to look and act, and then the AI takes a minute or two to cook up some software instructions it then flashes to the keyboard. This works surprisingly well, but there are caveats. I cover all the relevant aspects below. Now, the negatives: The DarkBeacon Flux 84 requires the installation of its companion app for basically every advertised feature. Without installing this app, the keyboard will still work, but you won't be able to take advantage of all the customization options. And there are a LOT of customization options. So, you'll want to install the DarkBeacon software. And that's bascially where ALL the negatives come in. First, the software itself is a whopping 361.8 MB. That's a huge amount of data for a simple keyboard configuration software. But remember, the Flux 84 is advertised as an "AI keyboard," so there's more going on here than simple keyboard configuration. In actual fact, the software installs a Hermes AI-agent runtime onto your machine. As far as I can tell by going through the associated system files, this is sandboxed pretty explicitly, so there's no apparent risk of AI "taking over" your computer. (The software specifically excludes terminal access on Windows, for example; I didn't test the Mac version.) However, it does mean that your keyboard communicates with DeepSeek servers whenever you use its AI functions. And unfortunately, almost every cool feature of this keyboard—in terms of RGB effects and patterns, anyway—requires you to use those AI functions. You can remap keys and create macros and set activation points and keypress behaviors with or without the AI, but the full gamut of RGB goodness requires you to use the DarkBeacon AI chatbot within the app, and many users will find it easier to just use AI for all of the above, anyway. Annoyingly, you can't use the software or access ANY of the keyboard's customization options—AI or otherwise—WITHOUT creating an account on the DarkBeacon network. Yes, there is a "social network" element involved, here. For example, you can download keymaps and lighting effects created by other users, rate them, comment on them, etc. This account requirement is pretty lame, and it's not something that's reflected in the ad on the item's product page. (At least I was able to just use my standard Google login like I do with everything else I don’t care about at all.) But then there's another issue: the AI isn't even free to use! The DarkBeacon app uses something called "AI Energy" every time you interact with the chatbot. The more complex the interaction, the more Energy it uses. The app gives you 1000 free Energy for creating an account, and each request depletes this by as few as two Energy or as many as 10+ Energy. There’s currently no indication of whether these Energy credits refill over time or how to buy more credits, how much those credits cost, etc. I asked the DarkBeacon chatbot about this, and I was told that no pricing has been determined yet and that there may be a subscription option rather than a pay-as-you-go option. In either case, this is an odd way to monetize a keyboard. I understand that AI API calls cost money, but I'm not sure the keyboard-using public is quite ready for something like this. To me, as of Q3 2026, it just feels kind of like a bait and switch more than anything else. The AI is neat enough, but to actually have to pay fees to use it? I don't think so. Continuing on, I must say that while it's pretty powerful, the DarkBeacon software isn't particularly stable. You need to make sure your keyboard is always running the latest firmware, too. The app gives you the option to skip the latest firmware installation, but it errors out if you do. So, you can only access the app and modify your keyboard if the keyboard is up to date. In the two days I've been testing this keyboard, I've had to update the core app once, install a new firmware once, and restart the app several times just to get everything running. Even then, it's buggy, and there are lots of random crashes. Right now as I type this, my custom AI-created RGB pattern has stopped working, and the app keeps kicking me out. I was able to get everything working again by unplugging the keyboard’s USB cable and then plugging it back in, so at least I didn't have to restart my computer. Even when the software is working stably, though, some things only work while the DarkBeacon app is running. If you close out the app, it will stay live in your app tray and be working in the background, and everything should still function. However, if you then quit the app from the app tray, the lighting effects you've used AI to create will disappear, and the keyboard will (usually, but not always) just revert to its default rainbow wave effect. Oddly, the keystroke character input effects—such as holding down the hyphen key to generate an em dash (which is very cool, I must admit)—will remain functional. So, some of the programming lives on the keyboard itself in its memory, and some of it stays in the associated DarkBeacon app. For most things, that just doesn't make sense. I get it for the audio effects (you can actually make your computer play canned sounds for each keystroke, which is admittedly amusing but suffers from a bit of lag which kind of ruins the illusion), but for everything else, you'd think it would live in the keyboard's persistent memory. I should be able to unplug this thing from my work PC and plug it into my home PC and have basically everything running exactly as if the app were installed on that second computer. However, this doesn't seem to be possible, and that's pretty annoying. So far, using this thing just seems like way more of a hassle than it's worth. It’s a keyboard. Come on. AI USER EXPERIENCE: I wanted to include my experience using the generative AI functionality of this keyboard separately from the main review. The process is definitely interesting, and it mostly works as intended (though I did not use the voice function; apparently, the Flux 84 has a built-in microphone that allows you to speak out instructions for RGB and keymapping to the AI chatbot directly). Anyway, I wanted the keyboard RGB to be totally off and only light up each key briefly right after pressing it. These keystrokes were to be red. Then, after 50 keystrokes, I wanted a yellow "explosion" effect to radiate out through the entire keyboard. Here was my prompt, including every hasty typo: "mAKE my keyboard be totally dark ie no backlighting, but every key i poress should be reactive and slowly fade. the reative collor should be red and every 50 keystrokes there should be a a big explosion in yellow that radiates out from the pressed key. the side lights should also be red" I submitted that request, and the AI processed it for exactly 60 seconds and burned through four Energy units. The result was good. I then modified the previous request so that the explosion would occur after every 100 words. This was the prompt for that: "do the same but make the explosion happen after 100 words. name the custom keybaord file as 100 Word Explosion" (I had to include the above naming instructions because the first RGB effect that the AI generated for me could not be saved to my profile or keyboard. The AI-generated title automatically assigned to it was more than 30 characters long, and the system requires the title to be 30 characters or fewer in order to be saved. That’s a pretty silly oversight, especially since the effect’s title can’t be manually adjusted after the fact. Hopefully, DarkBeacon will fix this bug.) This second generation took 87 seconds to process and cost six Energy. It also didn't work quite right, as it made the explosion effect happen after every 100 keystrokes, not after every 100 words. The AI is perhaps not sophisticated enough to interpret actual words on its own. In order to get the AI to induce the explosion after every 100 words, I had to alter the instructions a bit and associate the explosion with 100 activations of the spacebar. That worked better. To demonstrate the effect on video, I ran a third generation to simplify things and change the explosion behavior. The attached video shows the effect of the following prompt (as well as all the default RGB effects that come with the software): "make me a pattern where the keyboard backlights are all off, including the side lights. for every button i tap, i want the key to light up red, reactively, then fade away. after every fifty keystrokes, i want an explosion effect that looks like a yellow ring radiating out from the key that is the fiftieth key that is pressed. this should also cause the side lights to light up. this effect should be yellow rather than red, andf the sidelights should also be yellow." This generation took 104 seconds and cost three Energy. There's really no rhyme or reason for why the Energy costs what it does. In any case, as you can see, the result is pretty on-point. I rather like it. I then tried another prompt, where I kicked the explosion threshold up to every 100 characters. I also included some instructions about a desired behavior for the Caps Lock key. Here's the prompt for that: "do the exact same thing but change the threshold to every 100 characters instead of every fifty. the rgb should be identical in terms of effect. also make the Caps Lock button ONLY toggle into caps lock mode by double pressing the key. a single press should take it out of caps lock but a single press should never turn caps lock on. Name this file Word Explosion Caps." This didn't work. The RGB was fine, but the software does not account for double presses (which is a pretty big oversight, IMO). Here's the relevant clarification I got from the chatbot: "On the Caps Lock part — that exact behaviour can't be done: DarkBeacon's advanced keys don't support double-press detection, so there's no way to make Caps Lock engage only on a double press while a single press never turns it on. Caps Lock will keep working as a normal single-press toggle for now." I wish I hadn't had to wait 94 seconds and burn through seven Energy to be told that my request wouldn't work. Ideally, the AI should have clarified this immediately BEFORE generation and then asked me how to proceed. Here's the modified prompt I submitted, as I still wanted to test the keymapping abillity of the AI: "do the exact same thing but change the threshold to every 100 characters instead of every fifty. the rgb should be identical in terms of effect. also make the Caps Lock button ONLY toggle into caps lock mode by long-holding the key down. a long hold should also take it out of Caps Lock, not a single press. A single press should do nothing. Also, when caps lock is activated, I want the Caps Lock button to remain lit up in light green while the rest of the board continues to follow my regular RGB rules. Name this file Word Explosion Caps 2." This ALMOST worked perfectly. The generation took 131 seconds and cost six Energy. The Caps Lock behavior is correct as requested, but the key's RGB effect is activated with a single tap, so that doesn't yet work as an indicator for the actual Caps Lock's active status. Also, this ran as two separate operations, each requiring a name of less than 30 characters. SInce I didn't realize that, I was only able to save one of the effects (the one I actually named). Again, this is pretty annoying. There's a definite learning curve, here. Note: I tried one last time to get this working like I wanted, and after a few more prompts (which I won't recreate here) and an expenditure of around 25 Energy, I gave up. I have no doubt that I could eventually get things working perfectly, but the experience is kind of like trying to refine an AI-generated image; the more you try to clarify and dial things in, the more wonky and out of sorts things get. The explosion behavior changed dramatically from where I had it, despite telling the AI to keep that effect intact, while the caps lock RGB rules are applied backwards and seemingly can't be reversed. All in all, this AI effect generation model has a lot of potential, but it also has a lot of problems right now. I may still play around with this some, but I think I’ll probably end up just uninstalling the DarkBeacon software and relegating this keyboard to the old storage heap. It's a really neat idea, but it's all a bit much for me, and the monetization question—as well as the security questions surrounding agentic AI generally—are not confidence-inspiring. If DarkBeacon can make everything free and more transparent (and fix all the bugs!), I think lots of people will actually like this concept. NOTES: ✏️ My two daily driver keyboards both support VIA, which is a web-based keyboard customization software. I use that, alongside AutoHotkey, to get most of the functionality I can get out of the Flux 84 using its dedicated app. Certainly, I can't get remotely the same RGB effects out of those boards, but I don't care THAT much about RGB. I care more about customizing what my keys can do. The only thing the Flux 84 does better than VIA in that regard is support keystate inputs. I can't use VIA to assign different results for taps, tap-and-hold actions, etc. I also can’t use VIA to assign different actions to different keystroke depths when using HE switches. Those capabilities are genuinely useful, and the DarkBeacon software allows for all of the above (when it works). I do think it's silly that the DarkBeacon software doesn't allow for double-taps or quick successive taps of function keys and special keys, though. PROS 👍 Keyboard is well-put-together with decent materials for its price point 👍 Typing experience is fast and smooth 👍 HE switches have lots of unique uses with activation customization 👍 Unlimited RGB effects/patterns 👍 AI RGB and keymapping functions work surprisingly well 👍 DarkBeacon app supports both Windows and Mac (Apple silicon only) 👍 Pretty inexpensive for what you get (HE switches, full RGB, etc.) CONS 👎 DarkBeacon app required for even the most basic customization 👎 DarkBeacon account required to access DarkBeacon app 👎 Mac installation is limited to newer Macs using Apple silicon (i.e., non-Intel-based Macs) 👎 AI customization functions cost money (“Energy”); 1000 free energy included with new DarkBeacon accounts 👎 No cost/subscription information currently available 👎 No wireless functionality 👎 Included USB-A-to-USB-C cable may be limiting 👎 App installs full Hermes AI agent runtime 👎 App size is quite large (~362 MB) 👎 Many custom effects on work while app is running 👎 Keyboard doesn’t retain many RGB effects in its own memory 👎 App is unstable, keyboard glitches out and requires cable to be unplugged/replugged, etc. 👎 More trouble than it’s worth 👎 Product page doesn’t make most restrictions/limitations clear at all VERDICT 😑 I would not buy this again (but it’s an admittedly neat idea). ... show more

Impressive Performance and Features for the Price
Color: Black Keyboard layout: QWERTY
I’m actually very impressed with this keyboard. It feels well-made, setup was a breeze, and the keys have a really nice feel when pressed—responsive and smooth without feeling cheap. The Hall Effect magnetic switches, adjustable actuation and rapid trigger are great features, especially for gaming where quick response matters. The 8000Hz polling rate is another nice performance feature, and everything feels fast and responsive during use. I also really like the 85% layout because you still get plenty of functionality without having a huge keyboard taking up desk space. The RGB backlighting looks great and adds a nice gaming aesthetic without taking away from the overall quality. The wired connection is stable, the construction feels durable, and the keyboard has a solid feel that makes me think it will hold up well over time. Overall, there are a lot of higher-end gaming features packed into this keyboard for the price, and I think it’s a great value. ... show more
