I currently own two pairs of Danner boots - these, and a pair of special forces desert boots that I've owned since special forces started wearing them a dozen or so years back - both are of similar construction although the desert boots are taller and offer ankle support in a way these do not, and the desert boots are meant to allow air to flow around the foot while keeping out sand and dirt(which they do well) and these are waterproof so do not breath like desert boots - other than that this review works for both with minimal modification. I probably have as much experience with this type of boot as anyone for what it's worth. I first had a pair of Danner boots made this way when I was a teenager and wore daily into my 30's. I threw them away because they got so filthy and ugly that I could no longer clean them enough and the vibram soles were worn down almost flat at the ball of the feet but they were still fully functional and waterproof. I remember they cost $60 which was a crazy high price for hiking boots 40 years ago, much more than $300 is today. A shopping cart of food was $10 and gas was about a quarter per gallon. This type of construction lasts far longer than anything else still on the market. They are expensive but well worth the price - they'll out live many pairs of 100+ dollar boots so, in the end, they are much cheaper. Unlike most boots made now, they can be re-manufactured and repaired properly. You could conceivably keep these boots for the rest of your life. The finish on the Stumptown boots is worthless, it will begin to scrape away the first time you wear them, but it makes no difference in the long run. Good polish brings them back to a decent look if you have a need for them to be shiny. They look like cheap work boots, so looks are not a reason to buy these. They are made of the highest grade materials and are truly built to last as long as a boot can last. They take a bit to break in but form to your feet in about two weeks (constant, everyday wear or a LOT longer if you just wear them on hiking excursions)until they feel like they were custom made from a mold of your feet. The loose parts tighten around your feet, the tight parts loosen up. They are NOT comfortable when you first put them on (unless they just happen to fit right out of the box) but will be after taking the long time to break them in properly. Remember that these boots are old school craftsmanship - we are a society accustomed to instant gratification and you won't find that in a boot like this. When I was young, any high quality shoe took time to break in so it doesn't bother me. Many shoes today don't even last as long as it takes to break in a great pair. Make sure you put the laces through the tiny slits in the tounge or it will slide off sideways. It takes some doing to get it through. The tounge design is bulky and you'll need to take some care while breaking in to get it to set in a way that is comfortable to you. If you just tighten the laces and go, you may end up with a bunch of leather in an uncomfortable position. If you set it right for your feet, it will quickly gain a memory of that position and fall into place every time. The heel is wide and takes time to form - thick wicking socks are a must for these boots espescially at first or your heel will slide around. The moisture from your feet eventually shrinks them into fit but that's the part that takes the longest. These boots are not for everyone. They are somewhat expensive up-front and take time to become truly your boots. If you want instant comfort, be prepared to buy new boots every year or two. If you are willing to break in a pair of these, they will be comfortable for many, many years.

First off I want to say I've been looking for a quality pair of boots for about a year. I've owned red wings in the past and loved them but every single pair I tried on in the last year just didn't fit right. These danner boots do. I wanted a pair of boots I could use daily through the cold weather months. A pair I could do some work in, a pair I could take to the trails if i wanted but overall just a good comfortable, nice looking pair of boots that will hold up to the abuse I dish out. After picking between three different boots I read reviews and went with the mountain lights 2. I was a little conserned and hesitant because of some of the reviews in comfort and fit. I will say my very wide feet had no trouble with these boots. I don't understand nor do I have problems with the tounge like many have. I do have pain in my achilles tendon after a long day of use but that's common with most boots new out of the box for me. The fit was off in the first pair I ordered. I've had my foot measured recently and its a 10.5. With how wide my foot is I usually get an 11 and in some cases depending on brand go up to an 11.5. The first pair I ordered in an 11 and it was huge!!!! The second pair I got a 10 (I've never wore a 10 in any brand) and it fits perfectly. Just a warning my experience is these boots run big by a half size

I wanted to find a durable hiking boot that was recraftable, and could be resoled. After looking at several different brands I chose these, and I'm glad I did. These are very durable boots, and the leather is very high quality. It is a well-made boot that will stand the test of time if they are cared for with regular leather conditioning. The tongue design helps keep the laces from making pressure points on the top of my foot. I wear a 10.5 D, and so I ordered that size. They fit well, and I think a 10 D would have been too tight for me. These are made a little more narrow so if you have a wider foot I would be a little more careful with sizing. These are not super light, but they are not what I would call a heavy boot. I would not judge the size and fit too much when you first get them, because I found they fit a lot better after break in. The break-in period was tough, but after a couple weeks of wear they were loosening up quite a bit and were not hurting my feet to wear them. They now feel great. I find myself wearing these a lot more than just hiking. I was somewhat apprehensive about using the half-length orthotic pieces that came with them, but I gave them a shot. I think I will keep using them. They are a lot more comfortable that I thought they would be, and insoles that I've tried jam up the toe-box too much for me. Care for and condition these and they will last for many years even with very heavy use. The best hiking boots I've ever owned!!

Been wearing the boots for over a month now, and they are great. The Mountain Light II is, by design, a tighter fitting boot than the standard Mountain Light. Please be aware of this! They are designed to be snug, and fit like a glove. You must take this into account. I normally wear a 12 or 13, since 12.5's don't exist in most brands. I normally wear a regular width (D) boot and shoe. I ordered these as a 12, but ordered them in EE, which is wide, and not what I would normally order. I followed the directions on Danners website about sizing for these boots. I measured my foot, and knowing they were narrow boots, I ordered the EE size. They showed up, and they fit perfect. I feel the D would have been TOO NARROW for my NORMAL width foot. All that being said, the boots have been great. They needed some serious break in being that they are good heavy leather. I wore them around the house and office for light duty for a few weeks before I took them out in the wild. Since then, they've been on a few chukar hunts, and pulled lots of outdoor work duty around my property. I have been wearing them daily ever since they broke in. Great fit and finish, comfortable once broken in, and solid. I don't have much issue with tongue slippage as others do. I swapped out the green laces for Red paracord. Much better. be aware these come with the Danner "airthotics" insoles. They are a super slippery white plastic heel cup. My heel kept sliding in them, so I tossed them out and bought a set of Superfeet. Much better. Its unfortunate that they include a $30 pair of insoles that in my opinion are junk, I'd expect better for a nearly $400 pair of boots. But, given that they cost that much and should last a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long time, Spending another $50 on a quality pair of insoles wasnt a big deal. It might be petty, but the insoles are the reason I'm giving this boot a 4 star instead of 5. Again, for an average retail of nearly $400 after tax, they should have nailed that.

The boots are awesome, with great quality and craftsmanship. However, they were pretty large on me and I always wear a size 9.5. I ordered the same size because people say they generally run narrow, and the leather would break in anyway. However, when I got them there was quite a bit of extra room in the toe box as well as width...and I even wear a wide in some shoes. I returned to exchange for a size 9 and we'll see how those fit on Friday. Shipping was incredibly fast and the return was easy. Plus this is about the same price you can get them for on black Friday with 25% off from Danner directly. After 9 months of heavy use, the boots are obviously well broken in and are the most comfortable I've ever had. They show very little signs of wear. I have used them fairly extensively for hiking in all different ecotypes all around the country (probably 400 miles), as well as just regular daily wear. I have no doubt that these boots will last 5 years with this continued type of use and care. Only problem is the heel cups are cracking, but I'm sure they'll give me new ones. These boots do require a fairly extensive break-in...for me, that was at least 25 miles til I stopped noticing change. I, too had them give me blisters and a good bit of paint for the first 15 miles or so, perhaps more. For people who don't hike much, that is A LOT longer than they may think it is and it could take them many uses to break them in. I have no pressure points or anything with these boots.

I really appreciated the made-in-USA quality of these boots. The Mountain Light II has a strong shank, resisting torsional twist well. The lug sole is strong and grippy. The leather and craftsmanship are high quality. Exactly as you would expect for this price point. Having said that, I offer these suggestions: 1. I have been on a waiting list for these from the Portland factory since early this year. On a whim, I tried Amazon, they had them in stock and delivered in 2 days! 2. As stated on Danner’s website, this model is made narrow. Definitely order the EE width if you are a normal width in other shoes. 3. The boots come with no orthotic insert other than a hard plastic heel cup/arch support device that is supposed to stay in the back of the shoe by itself? Buy a mid-grade insert that is as thin at the front as possible, so as not to crowd your foot to the top of the toe box. I write this review several weeks after delivery. I expected a grueling break-in based on other reviews, but my boots are quite comfortable after about 10 outings. Another feature was the availability of my true size, men’s 11-1/2. Nice!

I have written a review for these boots already but felt inclined to add a few things that I didn't in my last review of these boots. Breaking them in... It took four days and a whole lot of reading others reviews of properly breaking in these boots to ensure I wouldn't ruin them but here goes. I used warm water and dish soap and worked it into the outside of the boots after I removed the laces. I did this for a full half hour. I then dried the outsides and put on two pairs of socks. I left the boots on for four hours while walking around in them occasionally to dry the insides of the boots. Once this was complete I took off the laces once again and lathered them in mink oil and let them sit for three days. I made sure to to lather the inside strip of leather that goes around the ankle as well. Once the three days was up I wiped the excess off and polished it with a brush. Once this process was complete I put on a thick pair of socks and folded them down around my ankle a few times to give extra support for my first full day of wearing them. This helped the back of the Achilles to avoid a blister, yet after a few days of soaking in mink oil the boots were very soft. I have also read reviews about the tongue hurting the top of the foot... Well that just takes you working it with your hand to the coverture of your foot to keep it from bunching up. After wearing these boots for a solid week now they are by far the most comfortable pair of boots I have ever owned. Hopefully this review will help any of those people out there that are on the fence about buying these. These are fantastic boots but like anything nice you will need to take care of them to ensure they last. If you take the time to care for these boots you will love them!

Following advice on other reviews, I broke them in first by wearing them to work a couple of days. I probably should have put in a few more days before I hit the trails. I covered 12 miles/1,000' feet hiking the first day and developing a horrible hot spot. Not the problem with the boots; they weren't broken in yet. Duct-taped the quarter-size blister and was fine the next day. In terms of water proofness - very good up to tongue/top of the boots, so we're talking 3"-5" inch puddles or mud, but that's it. The bad news is once wet, all-leather boots could take days to dry. Granted, if I wanted a fast-drying boot I wouldn't have gone full-leather. I opted for durability and abrasion-resistance vs. weight and drying time. I misjudged the depth of a few spots in the Little Missouri and Cossatot rivers (Ark) and fully filled up with water. They don't really drain either, so I had to take them off and pour them out. Lesson learned for me though, because they next few days' river crossing, I took them off. Great firmness to the midsole - but not overly stiff like full-on backpacking boots. I could wear them around town without feeling like they were ski boots, but on the trail, the stiffness was very welcome when climbing. Also, the lack of insulation made them perfect for summer hiking, but I'm sure in cooler temps, the right socks would make these work as well. They don't have an insole which looks weird, but the molded interior fit really well. (The sizing, BTW, was spot-on perfect.) Finally, the lugged sole was spider-like. Deep, deep treads and very pronounced heel break made rock scrambles and descents much more secure, even under load and on wet rocks.
