Edit; My initial review is below. The day after my review, the owner of Dalstrong personally emailed me and apologized for the not so sharp blades on the knives. He also explained to me that the problem with the sheaths is being addressed with a redesign in the future. It seems the products which are included in the packaging tend to rub the sheaths during shipping and causes the scuffs and scratches. So they are going to start using a rough surface on the sheaths in the future. Then he informed me that he was sending me a replacement set of knives, because of the issues I had with the initial set. And the order was placed with a two day shipping option. I received the knives today. I opened them and checked to see if they were indeed sharp. And they are. This set is much sharper than the first set. The sheaths are scuffed, the same as the originals, but it's nice to know that the problem is being addressed by the manufacturer. Overall, for the money spent, these knives are excellent. In fact, I would say they are the sharpest I have personally used to date. I will buy more Shogun Series knives in the future. And I definitely recommend them to anyone wanting a very nice knife, and a company who stands behind it's product. The packaging is incredible. We used them the day after they arrived and, honestly, I was somewhat disappointed because they weren't as sharp as I had imagined they would be when they arrived. I wasn't expecting to have to take them to get sharpened right away. They weren't dull, but they certainly aren't the sharpest knife. The knives look very nice. I love the appearance. And the feel in the hand is perfect - very well balanced and solid feeling. They are beautiful and an impressive addition to a table setting. This will be the set of knives we use when we host other couples for dinners. The sheaths were very disappointing. I would like to be able to use the knives, in the sheaths, for table settings, however, when they arrived they were all scarred and scratched pretty bad. So, they are not suitable for guests to see or use. Sadly we will set the knives out for table settings without the sheaths. I have been dreading giving this review because when I ordered the knives I was very excited about the purchase, and didn't want to have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed. I really was expecting to be 100% satisfied with these knives. I would like to be able to give this set five stars, but because of the knives being somewhat dull and the sheaths not being able to be displayed, I can only give them 3 stars. This doesn't mean that I would not recommend them to other people. The knives look incredible. Nor does it mean that I will not purchase another Dalstrong product, because for the money spent, it's still a fairly good deal, but, based on the set I received, I can't say they are top of the line knives.

I purchased a set of Dalstrong Shogun Series steak knives and the same series 10.5" bread knife about two months ago and deliberately hold back from giving a review (despite being "invited" several times) until I had a fair amount of time using them. It maybe worthwhile to mention that I ordered the Hammered Finish Chef Knife afterwards, which may be taken as a vote of satisfaction. Just to be clear, this review mainly covers the Shogun Series steak knives. Before I placed my first order, I have pretty much read through all the reviews for Dalstrong's various knives. While most of them are positive, I have seen comments on Amazon accusing the Damascus patterns are print (that they are exactly the same) and I must admit I was a bit concerned. But the high average ratings and a lightening deal, plus Amazon's excellent return policy, prompted me to give them a try. Even so, I maintain somewhat skeptic until I got hold of the knives. After close inspection on the set of steak knives, this much I know and that is the patterns on each of the knife are distinctive. If the patterns are printed, then Dalstrong's factory has done a really impressive job at that. The only way to test whether they are truly layered steels, one needs to sand down the side of the blades. I simply don't have the courage to do so, and so will leave it to someone else. I have done a fair bit of slicing with the steak knives (and bread knife) and they are sharp and I felt totally at ease moving/gliding the knives. Below are how I rate them in different categories: For the materials - 5 stars (very hard steels, grippy handles, rigid construction and good balance) For the sharpening - 5 stars (not quite measured up to my set of Shun Ken Onion steak knives, but at par with my Zwilling J.A. Henckels Set & Wusthof Classic Ikon Set) For the polishing - 4 stars (there are some fine lines on the handles and the end caps that leave room for desire, though to be fair the Zwilling J.A. Henckels also received 4 stars from me on this score) For details - 4 stars (this is personal preference - too much words on the blade and the stamped lionhead emblem is overkill; and the mosaic adornment in the middle rivet makes the knives less professional/serious in my view, not to mention copper is highly subjected to discoloring) For overall packaging - 5 stars (the box, sheaths and cleaning cloth are highly appreciated; the key chain I can do without) If you average the above scores, it's not an absolute 5 stars but pretty close. A final point is that I did not purchase these knives at any discount from Dalstrong, apart from the Lightening deal offer, and the above represent my truthful opinion.
