  • Bag nerd wouldn't recommend as a regular backpack
As a backpack (speaking to the 25L version) I would give this product 3 stars. Issue number one is hard for me to describe but the straps while not necessary uncomfortable to me feel off. It is almost like the padded part is shorter in length than most, it is still padded where it makes contact with my chest, so again not uncomfortable but not quite right and not 5 star material (call it a half star deduction). Additionally in my opinion if you aren't using it for a diaper bag alternative, i don't know why you would choose this backpack as there are so many packs to choose from with better pocket design. The insulated pocket is the exterior most pocket and has no built in organization, it has one zipper end to end, so if you had pens in there not only would they be rattling around on their side, they would all fall out when you unzipped the bag. Sure it has a sunglasses holder, but it not protected (soft case) and to me that is the whole point of a sunglasses pocket. The third zippered pocket above the insulated pocket, is semicircle in shape and of course capacity - it does not go all the way down to the bottom of the bag (you couldn't store a tablet in here, unless you are a mouse, then yes your tablet and even your car will fit in here nicely). The only distinguishing feature of this bag is its insulated pocket, and if that is your reason for buying it then buy another backpack and purchase a neoprene lunch bag instead that folds flat inside your better organized bag. But as for my use - I am using this as a diaper bag alternative, something that as a guy I can use once i no longer need it for a diaper bag. I bought the 25L and it qualified as a diaper bag alternative because it had the one feature i wanted - a quick access insulated pocket for cups/bottles. It does do the job good enough, the depth of the pocket isn't great, but i do manage to fit 2 sippy cups (3 1/8" base, 6 inches high - you can't go wider but you may be able to go a little taller) plus a small thin ice pack underneath them vertically in the pocket and it zips up snug. The insulated pocket doesn't provide much insulation, but it serves my purpose. The main compartment offers plenty of space for change of clothes, diapers and potty seat. There are two additional outside pockets (one of them the sunglass pocket) which i use to hold snacks and tissues. I give it 4 stars as a diaper bag for the strap issue and the insulated pocket that could be bigger, better insulated, and come with two zippers. I would recommend this bag as a diaper bag alternative, but not as a backpack. ... show more

  • Review for 25L Dakine from nursing student
First I'll say that this is an exceptional quality backpack as far as materials, the contour of the straps. My old backpack hurt my shoulders, back, and aggravated my sciatica. The straps on this Dakine are placed in a way that keeps the pressure off of your shoulders, alleviating back issues related to the weight of the backpack. It has two pretty good size water bottle holders, and eyeware pocket. I originally ordered the 33L not knowing a lot about Dakine products and I had to send that one back because it was TOO big for my small 5'3" frame. I'm much happier with this 25L. It may be smaller but holds a lot. I fit a 13.3 laptop, 1.5" binder, 2 heavy duty books, 1 regular book, a notebook, and a planner, and still had room for another notebook. I'm a nursing student, and I see no problem carrying all I need for whatever class. The color, and overall look is as pictured....except, I thought the writing on it was going to be white, its actually carbon, but looks nice. The CONS: This backpack falls short on the front pocket... Inside of it, it has a zipper pocket, two pencil holders, and two misc. open pockets. However, when I put my pencil & pen in there, they stuck out not allowing me to close the zipper. Also, that pocket is TOO small to fit my pencil pouch so it really doesn't serve as a functional purpose for me. The insulated cooler pocket at the very front has very little space, I can't imagine fitting anything in there other than protein bars...but does that really need insulation? I much rather would have sacrificed that pocket to make the pencil pocket BIGGER! My decision to keep this backpack is solely based on the quality of backpack, and the way it distributes the weight of books evenly preventing shoulder and back aches, it's size, and book space. I recommend this backpack, however if you have a ton of pencils/markers/highlighters, you'll need a pencil pouch for your folder, or just put it in with your books. ... show more

  • Dakine of backpack I’ve been searching for!
Yes, exactly what I’ve been looking for! I purchased the 25 liter (for myself) & the 33 liter for my 7th grader who needed a bigger backpack bc of the books he has to carry around plus a chrome book & a few binders. Besides having to be big enough, I was really looking for a backpack with 2 side pockets. One side for my water & the other side for my empty Contigo coffee cup at the end of my workday. Or an easy access place for my keys or glasses/sunglasses. It has plenty of pockets for that, but I just prefer them there sometimes lol. It actually does have a spot for glasses/sunglasses where the interior of the pocket is like the kind of material that is given to you to clean them; really soft & safe for your glasses if you don’t have a case. I also LOVE that there’s an insulated cooler pocket to put cool foods in. I accidentally left an almost ripe banana in there for almost a week. You know how bananas are, they’re almost ripe one second & then the next, boom- the skins all black & bananas all gross & mushy, you gotta toss it out. Not this one! When I found it, it was just ripe & ready to eat. YAY! ... show more
