  • It's a great reel, compared to other reels
Size: 4000
It's a great reel, compared to other reels, this feels smooth and has a ton of power behind it. Do a bit of research and you will find mostly praises for this reel. For around 100 dollars, it cannot be compared. It feels smooth, steady, and provides you with confidence that is required to handle bigger species. I use this for everything including saltwater and freshwater. The only thing I had trouble with was fitting the 4000 sized reel on to a Shakespeare elite 7-foot medium. The foot of this reel was a bit too large for the reel seat of the Shakespeare but I forced it in somehow. I do surf fishing with this and trout fishing by switching my leader. I have a 15 lb braided line and when targeting different species, I change my leader from 20lb to 4lb. Recently pulled a 2lb Monkeyfaced prickleback out of a hole with this combo with relative ease. 3 Months Update I really enjoy and recommend this reel, I will buy multiple sizes for different rod setups. I fish on mostly on jetties and I have fallen and banged this reel up, it still runs like a champ. I try my best to take care of my tackle, but accidents do happen. :/ I paired mine with a Shakespeare Elite: Ugly Stik Elite Spinning Rod 7' - Medium - 2pc Update 9 months: I pair it now with a UglyStik Elite Spinning Fishing Rod (Salmon/Steelhead) with is a much better pairing for this reel size. Shakespeare Ugly Stik Elite Spinning Fishing Rod (Salmon/Steelhead) Still no problems fishing saltwater with it. I just do a simple rinse with tap water and everything function flawlessly. No squeaking, just dings, and scratches from fishing off the jetty and resting my reel/rod on the rocks. Caught 23inch lings and halibut with relative ease. I fish twice a week so I am extremely happy with the purchase. If any other reels I have fail I will replace it with this one again. Update (18 months) 1.5 years Still going strong, accumulated more dings to the reel from falls and such, fishing once a week at least I still haven't serviced it yet (I should) and it is still working as it should. Only thing I did to the reel is to sand the top of the spool since it became rough due to me falling and banging the reel on the jetty rocks but the reel is still surviving and works as it should. This is my only rod and reel I bring since going to the jetties and having reliable gear means a lot to me. My father just broke his Penn reel that I bought for him I will be replacing it with this one since my experience with it is such an excellent one. 2 Years without a hiccup. Great reel, I fish with it once a week in saltwater, if you rinse it off every time after you fish and do maintenance yearly (I did my first one after 2 years) I believe it will last a very long time. ... show more

  • love this reel
Size: 4500
80% of my rod and reels are made by penn. this is only my second reel from daiwa. i bough this cause i had the same reel on a rod and reel surf combo given to me by my friend. i fell in love with it cause it was built solid, the drag was smooth and it's not expensive. so i decided to get same reel to pair it with my other daiwa surf rod. i've used it a few times now and it performs just as well as my other reels. in fact i take it with me all the time now and leave my slammers, battles and spinfishers home cause i don't have to worry about losing a cheaper reel and i'm not sacrificing reliability cause this reel can handle stripers and blues with no problem. so compared to the other reels costing a lot more this is a great value without sacrificing quality. this would be like a penn battle 3 but its not better than my spinfishers and slammers. ... show more

  • Very light reel. Throws a mile effortless.

Have not fished with it yet but have practiced throwing in the driveway.

  • Can’t Go Wrong! A Must-have Work Horse Reel.
Size: 5000
This is a great all around reel. The smoothness is great. When you perform your maintenance on a Daiwa BG 4500 - 8000, you will notice there is no reverse switch like on the Daiwa BG 1500 - 4000. Daiwa installed a anti-reverse larch that pin the pinion gear and shaft in place. This subsystem integrates a fine gauge wire (preformed) to a specific shape. If you’re having issues with the anti-reverse after you performed a maintenance, it is likely the wire that is mounted on the main gear and the wire is put in the hole that the latch is connected to. You want the gap between both ends to be no more than 2-3mm. Also the Straight end of the wire should be perpendicular to the circular part of the wire. Also: if you’re having issues with the reels smoothness, you want to inspect all the bearings and make sure everything is properly installed and lubed up. There is a brass nut that affixes they bail to the reel frame. You will notice a black centering cap that holds 3 screws. If you are still having smoothness issues, you probably have that one brass nut tightened just a hair or 2 too much. Adjust the torque in small increments and spin the handle after each increment to “feel” what is the smoothest for you. I found that the black centering cap fits without any hassle when you have that brass nut torqued down properly. It is sorta funny how the adjustment of the fine wire that is mounted to the gear, even by 1mm, and tightening the brass nut down too much will make your reel feel off. This is a great reel, smooth high-quality bearings, ported out aluminum frame for maximum weight reduction. I own a Daiwa BG 3000,3500,5000,6500. All great reels. ... show more

  • Good quality but not perfect
Size: 3000
A little heavier than I thought it would be. Smooth but not as smooth as my 1 year old Shimano Vanford or my 15 year old Stella 2500FD. For the money it is great!

  • Diawa BG4500 Powerful Workhorse
Size: 4500
I am writing this review in the second year of owning the BG 4500. I fish salt water in the PNW from rocky cliffs and jetties. This reel is smooth, and has incredible winching power to get those big Lingcod up the side of the rocks with ease. I was tired of catching then losing fish in the retrieve of pulling them up the cliffs. Not anymore, if the hookset is good, they are coming up! I have landed ling from 22 inc -32 inc monsters thanks to this reel and my 9 ft Med Action ugly stick elite. I cannot recommend this reel enough, best value out there for fishing salt or fresh, from salmon to rockfish. Just buy it your won't be disappointed :-) ... show more
