  • Outstanding router and even better customer service!!!
My uVerse modem/router is in the basement and there were many WiFi deadspots throughout my house so I decided to get a standalone router and install it in a ground floor room to maximize coverage throughout the house (and to the hammock in the back yard during good weather!) My choice was the D-Link DIR-890L that I bought in June of 2015. Setup was super simple and I was online very quickly. The performance and range are outstanding. I used 3 separate SSIDs for the 3 channels and I have my devices spread across the 3 channels - Newer devices are on the 5GHz channels and older devices are on the 2.4Ghz channel. WiFi on the uVerse modem/router was disabled. Everything was running great until right around the holidays (December 2015). At that time I noticed that I could not use the uVerse app on my phone to control the uVerse DVR. I also noticed that I could not print to my (wired) network printer from wireless devices. Finally, I noticed that my Vulkano would not stream to my wireless devices over WiFi. These problems were probably there from the beginning but I only noticed them during the holidays as I was inside more. The problem turned out to be an IP issue between the uVerse modem (192.168.1.xxx DHCP addresses) and the D-Link router (192.168.0.xxx DHCP addresses). In June, I had configured the router to operate in "Router" mode (the default) and connected it the uVerse modem using the WAN port on the router. While this worked great for accessing the internet it in essence created 2 separate networks that did not talk with one another. After searching the internet for ways to overcome this problem I ran across several similar solutions including this one from the AT&T support site: https://forums.att.com/t5/Features-and-How-To/How-to-put-the-Motorola-NVG589-in-bridge-mode-or-as-close-as-you/td-p/3552057 I followed the instructions but still no luck printing, etc. from the wireless devices. After several hours working with this, I called D-Link tech support. Hold time was fairly long (due to call volume per the recorded message) and when I made it to the top of the queue the first person I spoke with indicated that they were not trained on the 890L and wanted to know if it was okay to transfer me to someone more knowledgeable. Some people may be turned off by this but I was impressed by the honesty as I would much rather deal with someone who knows the product. The second person I spoke with was Jasmine (AR004216) and she was OUTSTANDING! We spent considerable time (90 minutes+) on the phone trying various options and she was courteous and professional the entire time! More importantly, she fixed the problem! Turns out that what I needed to do in the beginning was to set the router into "Access Point" mode and disable DHCP. Sounds simple now but the order in which settings are changed makes a difference. Here is what worked: 1) Limit DHCP range on uVerse modem so that the D-Link router can be given a fixed IP address 2) Hard reset using a paper clip in the reset hole on the back of the router - Note: keep the paper clip in until the power light changes from white to amber 3) Wait for power light to turn white and stay white (~30 seconds) 4) Pull the power cord and wait 10 seconds 5) Reinsert power cord 6) Connect (via Ethernet cable or wirelessly) 7) Go to Settings/Wireless and turn off "Smart Connect" 8) Set up the 3 WiFi channels 9) Save 10) Go to Settings/Network and enter a fixed IP address that doesn't interfere with the DHCP range on the uVerse modem 11) Click on "Advanced Settings" and disable DHCP 12) Save 13) Go to Settings/Internet and change "Device Mode" to "AP Mode" (Internet connection should remain DHCP) 14) Save Once again kudos to Jasmie for her excellent customer service! ... show more

  • This thing has character, both in appearance and performance. Loving it! * Update after one week *
Presentation: I ordered this device at 11:15 and it was in hand by 5:00. The first thing I noticed was the presentation. The box was red and black and H U G E ! It was, seriously, the nicest packaging I had ever received, and the router within was also HUGE, about 8" by 16"!. I wish D-Link would put some optional eyestalks in here so it looks even more like a giant crab. Some people will hate this, I personally love it and am going to mount it on the wall and maybe get one of my more artistic family members to pimp it up a bit. Installation: The router was fairly easy to install, and pretty easy to attach to TV's, Roku's, phones, tablets, laptops and all. I would have liked a little more documentation on sharing the USB attachments, the VPN setup, and other advanced features. I've not gone to any effort to segregate the traffic so far, and I haven't found any documentation that tells me how to do so. If advanced/unusual features are critical for you, you may want to do some additional research before buying this modem. Initial performance: We've had some portions of our house where the wife never reached. Over a period of years I've tried range extenders, powerline adapters, bridges, etc. with mediocre results. This router rocks! Our range is greatly extended and the quality of service throughout and around the house is excellent. Devices: After a couple of days, our Dell Venu tablet wigged out and refused to connect to the WAN via wifi (LAN still worked), but this was resolved through Dell Support by deleting and re-installing the wireless adapter driver. Everything else worked super well. We'll have a bigger test in a couple of months when we go from the typical 15 or so connected devices to around 30 when the kids come home. Overall: At this point I am thrilled with this router. It was expensive, but at this point appears to be well worth the money. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One week update. After a few days, several connected devices lost the ability to connect to the router. After deleting the Wifi Adapter device in Windows Device Manager and then scanning for "new" hardware to rediscover it, they started working again. Hoping this is a one time thing. There was some difficulty in coverage to a certain portion of the house, but by moving the router (farther away, but away from the wall) and repositioning the antennas, this was easily overcome. Still loving the results, but wishing it had better features and documentation. ... show more
