  • Nice on Alto
Size: Strength 3.0
These are good on Alto. They did feel a 1/4 strength stiffer but should break in nicely. The tone is still nice and lush.

  • Versatile Reed for Classical and Jazz, Break-In Slowly, Good Attack and Sustain
Size: Strength 3.0
These D'Addario Royal Hemke have a slightly thicker shoulder, with the bulk of the wood contained within the heart in a tight elliptical pattern, while the rails and tip are thin. According to D'Addario these 3.0s are similar in hardness to a well-known French brand's traditional 2.5 reeds; this seems accurate, as they feel similar to the 2.5 & 3.0 traditionals I still own. I really like the shaping on these Royal Hemke, they fit a C* S80 rubber mouthpiece well, and the thin tip helps with the attack and sustain. I highly recommend following D'Addario's guidance on break-in: 30 sec soak in water and only 5 min per reed over the 3-5 days, as the first test reed's tip warped, while the other two test reeds that I broke in still look great. They arrived individually sealed in a #5 polypropylene pack, encased in a re-enforced paperboard sleeve. While the perboard sleeve is OK for temporary storage, I still opted to keep these in a plastic reed case to keep the table flat. As a seasoned player, I have plenty of plastic reed cases, so I appreciate the reduction in unnecessary plastic; yet, newer players may want to consider this when looking at the D'Addario reed lineup, as other styles still arrive with the thin plastic case. Overall, it's hard to complain about these reeds; they come in at a good value for being a versatile reed for both classical and jazz music, play well, and sound great. I like that D'Addario chose to print the stiffness and style on the heel of the reed, vs. the table, making it easy to ID in cases. ... show more

  • A balanced reed with excellent tone
Size: Strength 3.0
D'Addario Royal | Hemke Organic Alto Saxophone Reeds, Strength 3.0, 10-pack These reeds stood out for their crisp, bright tone and well-balanced feel from side to side, providing an enjoyable playing experience right from the start. The reeds responded well across the saxophone’s range, from low Bb up to Altissimo F#. I found the initial response to be satisfying and consistent. However, after extended playing, I noticed some difficulty maintaining stability in the altissimo range. I attribute this to the fact that I was using a #3 reed, whereas my usual preference is a #3.5 plasticover reed. This difference in strength did contribute to the reduced performance in the upper register during longer sessions. Overall, I enjoyed the playability of these reeds. The tone remained bright and rich, qualities I typically seek when using my metal mouthpiece paired with a plasticover 3.5 reed. Even though the Royal Hemke reeds are not specifically marketed as bright, they delivered a tonal brightness and richness that matched my expectations. At no point did I feel like I was missing out on the vivid sound I prefer. I look forward to trying these reeds in a higher strength, such as 3.0+ or 3.5, to see if they offer greater stability in the altissimo range while maintaining their desirable tonal characteristics. Based on my experience, I recommend the D'Addario Royal Hemke Organic Alto Saxophone Reeds to players seeking a balanced reed with excellent tone and reliable response throughout the instrument’s range. ... show more

  • Very high quality reeds that are consistently similar in tone, flexibility and sound.
Size: Strength 3.0
A shorter vamp, thin tip, and filed cut give these Hemke reeds a reliably consistent full, dark tone applicable to all genres. The obvious care in material selection and manufacturing results in a reed that plays the same from reed to reed. You will spend less time seeking reeds in your sweet spot because these are made to be closer to that same sweet spot from one to another. Hemke has always made very good reeds and these organic reeds are similarly of that quality and consistency. I keep mentioning "consistently" which is a highly desired quality in reed selection. Because a reed is a natural product, they will differ reed to reed, but that care in manufacture & processing makes the end result more the same across a box of reeds. That quality alone means more consistency in your playing and less fighting against the reed allowing you to focus more on music than mechanics. The price for these is in line with other professional reeds. Sure, you can buy cheaper reeds, typically not for professional use, but you will end up paying more per reed when you get done discarding the deficient reeds from a box. This is my first go at these organic Hemke reeds for my alto. After I use them a bit I will try some for tenor and baritone. So far I really like them because they are smoother, both musically and physically, than many others. My playing is more relaxed and my sound more even and robust with these reeds. I clearly like them and you should definitely try them out. ... show more

  • Great reeds, organic is a plus
Size: Strength 3.0
We like the idea of organic reeds given how much time they spend in your mouth, and these reeds are excellent. The manufacturer has a specific set of break-in instructions on the website, which we followed.... loosely... but even so, the 3.0s provide a nice blend of stiffness and excellent tone and responsiveness. Based on the stiffness chart on the website they're right in the middle range between stiff and soft. Overall we really like the reeds and wouldn't hesitate to get these again when we need reeds next. ... show more

  • Happy with these reeds
Size: Strength 3.0
My daughter is primarily a clarinet player, but took up sax about two years ago so that she could have more opportunities to play with her school's jazz band. Her favored clarinet reeds are D'Addario Reserve Classics, and we've found those to be consistently high quality and predictable. So far, these alto sax reeds are also proving to be good performers. She uses a Yamaha 5C mouthpiece, and feels that these reeds are a good fit... they sound great, and respond well. ... show more

This is a great set of reeds. My son plays altogether saxophone, and has been using these organic reeds this past month. He enjoys using them, and they work well.
