  • Iwata Custom Micron B
This is an excellent brush to say the least. Not anything more that I can say as it’s reputation is more that true. Absolute precision at its finest. Blows my H&S Infinity CR Plus out of the water.

  • Finest Illustrator Airbrush Available
Pros: Absolute quality. The fit and finish of the product is excellent, The body and tuned spray head have been precisely machined, deburred and cleaned, then triple plated with copper, nickel and chrome for durability and a lasting beauty. The fine 0.18 fluid nozzle combined with the hand fitted Micron spray head assembly, finely ground steel fluid needle and crown cap allows the user to spray ultra fine hairlines with watercolors, gouache and acrylics formulated for airbrushing. The level of fine detail and control this brush offers was previously only possible with the Paasche AB Turbo airbrush (and all the hassle and fuss that went along with the AB). Removal of both the crown cap and fluid cap allows the user to spray stipple patterns and the airbrush can operate at very low air pressures for extremely precise detail. All internal parts are copper and nickel plated for smooth, ease of movement and to prevent binding during operation. Trigger spring tension is adjustable with removal of the handle and the handle itself offers the user an adjustable needle travel control to precisely set the maximum size of a spray pattern for exacting work. The brush is nicely balance and feels very comfortable in the hand during use. Cons: PRICEY (Gasp!). The Iwata Custom Microns ain't cheap, folks. Even when I bought my CM-B and CM-SB back in the 1990s (for $200 each!) it wasn't cheap compared to conventional airbrush gear. The Custom Microns have gone up considerably in price over the succeeding decades, I guess, partly due to illustrator airbrushing going the way of the dinosaur in favor of computer generated 2D art applications eg Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. For the budding airbrush hobbyist, you would probably be better suited to using the more inexpensive Iwata HP-C or HP-B for your work and learn about airbrushing that way. Badger's Sotar 20-20 is a good option as well, but the fit and finish is not as fine as Iwata products are and this can make a difference in unit performance. One gripe I have with the components is the use of a neoprene needle bearing. I wish Iwata would use a Teflon needle bearing like Badger has for decades, but they don't and the neoprene ones require periodic lubrication with a little Vaseline from time to time. The good news is that the Needle bearing is easily accessible for maintenance through a side port on the airbrush body. The Custom Microns, like a thoroughbred, do demand a skilled professional at the controls and will not suffer a fool or a neophyte. It is very easy to damage the fluid needle and 0.18 mm nozzle through basic carelessness and destroy the fine spray pattern capabilities of the Micron spray system. Care must be taken when removing or re-seating the nozzle with the provided spanner to prevent stripping or shearing off the threading. I also strongly recommend that beginners do not remove the crown cap or needle cap during use until they develop quite a bit of skill and proceed with caution. Each Custom Micron spray head retails for around $130 so replacing them can become cost prohibitive. Finally, this is an illustrator's airbrush and only intended for use with thin media like watercolors or airbrush acrylics. Lacquers, enamels, etc can quickly clog or potentially damage the needle bearing. Consequently, if you're doing T-Shirt or van art, it's recommended that you look into a HP-BC, Badger 150 or similar airbrush as they will do everything you need for those roles. ... show more
