I chose soldier worms for a portion of my balcony garden feed because I observed a mating pair of mocking birds nesting nearby. I began feeding with small amounts in a feeder they preferred to visit. Upon learning about the new feed other birds began to visit the feeder as well. Soon I had a chorus of songbirds and visitors which consumed the offering within minutes. I've increased the amount to half a cup of worms mixed within my bird seed mixture. This has slowed the consumption significantly while still enticing my avian guests to visit. What I most like about the soldier worms is the resealable closure. The worms have a unique scent and dust particulate which I don't wish to breathe in. The resealable closure keeps the worms dry, the dust contained, and the scent out of my home. What I don't like is the dust particulate. It seems to be from crushed worms during processing. They're dehydrated so an point in manufacture, shipping, and storage can create the dust. While I'm not keen on live soldier worms perhaps less dehydrated would eliminate this problem? Oh, the picture is of Merlin a baby squirrel who loves carrots, soldier worms, and strawberries. He knocks on my windows to tell me when the birds have eaten all the worms. If you want to see this product, and many others, in action, there is a youtube channel called "az stuff" that emphasizes suet recipes for birds using seed, peanut butter, worms, feeders, molds, and other products I get from amazon. Since I can't link the videos directly, I can only mention the channel name. Having said that, I am extremely pleased with these. I am able to quickly make a large amount of heat-tolerant suet cakes that fit various hanging feeders. In AZ this summer, temps hit 106-108F and the suet cakes never melted. I can fit two side-by-side in each feeder, and this attracts about 18 different species of birds in my neighborhood. ... show more
