  • Really nice little machine, works pretty well now! ..hoping for some software improvements
Bottom line: I reviewed this as a 4 out of 5 – I feel I’m a little harsh as it’s almost a 5, but just has too many quirks and rough spots for a new CNC user (or even experienced user new to this machine) to get through before you feel comfortable running it. A little more software polish on the phone/tablet app or a major overhaul to the attached controller and I’d call it great. Machine is very nice, if on the small side – but if all you have is a small area, this is a nice choice. Plan on using the wireless app, the control panel is a bit too much exercise of your own finger’s fine motor control. Who would want this?: Good for learning, good for small parts, could be adequate for small aluminum parts, good for an environment that needs to stay clean, good for use in a house with other occupants (it’s noisy but not nearly as noisy as some of the larger CNC routers). The machine itself: Nicely designed unit, actually ready to go out of the box. Very complete – has everything you need to get going except maybe a digital or dial caliper. Small footprint, enclosure that works well for both sound and chip control, rigid enough to VERY slowly machine aluminum (several good videos online demonstrate that it works). Variable speed motor that is software controlled -nice. Built in auto Z zero for tool changing – certainly nice for new users. Not very powerful and not very big, but it sits nicely on my desk and doesn’t leave a mess after use. I suspect long run cleanup of the machine will involve removing the plastic bottom that has a bunch of screws. The two little round cleanout ports look a little inadequate, but we’ll see. Controllers/interfaces: I write this after a total of a couple of hours of fooling around to get the included Genmitsu text engraved using the wireless app on an iPad mini after messing with the attached control pad. The attached control pad works, but it just needs too many pushes on the tiny little buttons. It works, but it certainly gives you a workout in button pushing. Better is the wireless app, but that has its own quirks: leaves you guessing why something isn’t working, infrequently but sometimes does disconnect, limited features vs a full g-code sending program. I tried connecting Universal G-Code Sender on a laptop and had some problems – I have no doubt it will work, but probably not worth the effort vs the wireless app for this little machine. Problems (controllers only): 1. Wireless app doesn’t always connect easily and occasionally disconnects 2. The sample g-code files on the SD card are not visible to the app or controller until you move them to the top of the file structure (root directory) 3. When you use wireless app, the SD card contents are not able to be seen in the visualizer mode – to see them you have to upload them from a file location THROUGH the app onto the SD card. 4. I Hit “stop” in outline mode and it made me confirm, which seems silly! Fortunately just missed crashing into the holddowns when it didn’t stop. Now I have my finger near the E-stop. 5. When something doesn’t work right, you don’t always get a reason (or reasons) why and just eventually figure it out. None of these are showstoppers, just annoyances, but they make for a tougher learning curve on a machine that really is a beginner machine. I expect the Genmitsu app will continue to improve, so hopefully these problems diminish with time. It won’t replace my larger Genmitsu 4040 Pro Max in the garage or the much larger furniture-making-grade CNC routers at our local community space; however, it fills a niche for in-home, clean, quiet-ish work on small projects with maybe a few aluminum or brass/bronze cuts as a bonus. ... show more

  • Good for beginners getting started with CNC
The media could not be loaded. I am a retired technology guy with some limited machine shop experience about 40 years ago. I know my way around a digital caliper, but I have never operated a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine before. Today I do lots of DIY projects around the house and I’ve always thought that a CNC in my garage would sure be handy. Unfortunately, I never had the required floor space or, frankly, a few thousand dollars to get started. When I saw the Cubiko I thought it could be exactly what I needed to dip my toe into hobby. After spending a solid week with this machine, I believe I made the right choice, and I have now graduated from complete noob to amateur maker. The product page does a good job of outlining all the things you can do with the Cubiko so I won’t rehash that. Only to say that the Cubiko lives up to the claims, and that is unusual in today’s world. Most CNC machines are messy, loud and take a lot of space. The Cubiko solves all those issues, albeit only for small projects. I have it sitting right on my computer desk next to my printer. All that being said, here are a few things I think are important to know before committing to the Cubiko, and CNC in general: • CNC carving, at this level, is very much a hobby. Do not make the mistake of thinking that the Cubiko is some kind of “fancy” printer. True, the machine looks slick and comes fully assembled, but regardless of the marketing, it is not plug-and-play. More like plug-and-start-learning-how-to-use-this-thing. • Starting from zero CNC experience the learning curve is steep. Don’t get discouraged after the first hour. This is not one of those things you can do by leaving the manual in the box. • The superbly detailed and illustrated instruction manuals cover the mechanics of setting up the machine but do not explain all the “lingo” and theory of CNC. Before diving in, watch the YouTube video: Full Tutorial Genmitsu Cubiko CNC Router Machine. • Go to the sainsmart dot com website and find the Cubiko resource page. You’ll find lots of good information as well as software and firmware updates. • Don’t buy a big assortment of bits until you learn what the different bits are used for. • Do buy a consumer-quality 6-inch digital caliper if you don't already have one. Good ones can be had for $25-$50. • Free software is included to control the Cubiko and to execute pre-made project files (G-Code). I was looking for a more robust CAD/CAM solution right away so I could create my own projects. There are some free options, but “pro” versions can get expensive. Take advantage of free trials before spending big bucks. • The Cubiko is a brand-new machine fresh off a successful Kickstarter campaign, so there are still some rough edges even with the latest firmware. The good news is that the Cubiko is getting better with each new update. • Very active Genmitsu and Cubiko Facebook groups are a wealth of information and advice from experienced makers. • Genmitsu makes quality CNC machines, and SainSmart provides excellent pre- and post-sales support. • A 5.5W laser engraver and other options are available from SainSmart at very reasonable prices. I just ordered the laser unit so I’m excited to try that out. Is the Cubiko perfect? Of course not. Is it close to perfect for someone like me who is just getting started in the CNC hobby? Well, it could be. From my perspective, tinkering and learning is part of every hobby that I’ve ever been involved in, and the Cubiko is a great platform to learn on. It certainly fulfills my inherent need for creating and learning new things and it does it in a way that fits my lifestyle and workspace. From that perspective, the Cubiko is perfect for me and that’s why I gave it 5 stars. ... show more

  • Another great machine from Genmitsu
This router is another example of the great machines available from Genmitsu. The router came completely assembled and ready to go. The packing material is rock solid and assures your new router will arrive in perfect condition. Unpacking the router is easy and set up was basically plugging in the power supply up and installing the cutting bit of choice. The router uses the GRBL interface so it's compatible with many software packages. The work area is small on this machine but for projects that fit it's a very good machine. One benefit of the small size is it is much more rigid due to the shorter axes length. The router is very easy to operate and the cabinet reduces much of the noise level when machining a part and also reduces the dust coming from the machining process. Overall an A+ machine. ... show more
