Description

The women who traveled west in covered wagons during the 1840s speak through these letters and diaries. Here are the voices of Tamsen Donner and young Virginia Reed, members of the ill-fated Donner party; Patty Sessions, the Mormon midwife who delivered five babies on the trail between Omaha and Salt Lake City; Rachel Fisher, who buried both her husband and her little girl before reaching Oregon. Still others make themselves heard, starting out from different places and recording details along the way, from the mundane to the soul-shattering and spirit-lifting. Read more

  • Real diaries by real pioneer women
Format: Paperback
This is the second in a series - real diaries written by women who traveled west through various routes. I had a g-g-aunt who went west in 1850 and this gives me a better idea of how and what she did on the way west. These families take similar routes and as the series goes forward, we see descriptions of the same landmarks. This is one of the great migrations. Each book in the series includes another year or two so it's nice to start with the first book, however you can pick up any of these books and read just one diarist's story and not feel out of order. ... show more

Format: Paperback
This book was very detailed and gave me a very good idea as to what it was like to have traveled the Oregon Trail. You come to understand the sacrifices that people made to settle in the West. The descriptions of the trials of the trail were so real that you felt you were part of the wagon train. These described crossing rivers that were deep or foreboding, muddy trails, lack of feed for animals, dealing with death of family and animals, hot dry days where you had to move slowly for animals, etc. Definitely a good read. ... show more

  • A Full Picture of History
Format: Paperback
There's nothing better than reading history from those who lived it; while the inherent human biases exist, it's possible to get a more rounded image of the past when we have authentic voices. Women also tend to write down more interesting details about the western adventure. This is another great volume to add to your collection! ... show more

  • Motivating
Format: Paperback
Excellent journals. I have bought several in the series. They just don't make people like them anymore. We were so motivated by their experiences that we packed up and followed their trail last year. We made sure to see all the landmarks: Chimney Rock, Jailhouse and Courthouse Rocks, Independence Hill, Devil's Gate and more. What an experience! ... show more

  • First hand account of history
Format: Paperback
This book was particularly interesting because the author compiled diaries that have not been widely published. It was a fast read, yet it was packed with great information. I have already lent it to several people who also thought the book was great.
