  • Boiled linseed oil
Everyone is talking about the handles breaking on these axes made by Council tools. Council tool makes an excellent axhead. Their handles are OK. The press fit is a little less than desirable. The only reason these axes are breaking is because people are using the bare hickory handles without properly oiling them. When you get a roll handle, which I love, you have to put boiled linseed oil on it once a day for a week and then once A month for several months. And then maybe once a year after that. I have used this axe very little. However I have used A 6 1/2 pounder by counsel tool with a 36 inch handle and have had no problems with it. Oil your handles. It takes minutes a day. Overall, these are excellent tools. You are not going to spend the same amount of money elsewhere and get the same quality. However, you can probably spend five times as much and get a little bit better quality. ... show more

  • That'll do pig
Everyone knows council tool. I am a huge advocate of buying made in USA. I feel that you get what you pay for in this axe. It's a user, nothing fancy. But In my opinion there is much left to be desired. On the axe that I received, the handle is straight with the grain orientation being "acceptable" for something at this price point and came with a wax (not laquer) finish. Time will tell the durability of how it's hung, with an Aluminum wedge in the kerf and gaps front and back. I will re handle if need be. The grind on the head is pretty sloppy but can be refined if you so please. Overall, I am happy with my purchase. ... show more

  • Good axe for pounding wedges
I bought this axe specifically for pounding wedges and it should work well for that purpose. The fit and finish are very good. The axe head is well hung on a handle with good grain orientation. All in all, I'm very happy with this purchase.

  • Excellent Value and Solid Quality
I refinished and sharpened the head, as well as sanded and used linseed (flaxseed) oil on the handle. I turned this axe into a perfect forest companion, great for chopping, limbing and driving wedges. It's quality will ensure that I will be able to hand it down to my son. Highly recommended. Best for those that put some extra work into the fit and finish after receiving. ... show more

  • The eye is crooked
**Update** The eye is crooked, not acceptable for me, but I’ve already rehung it and can’t return it. The head was hung crooked. I chopped with it out of the box, it’s fine, always expect to have to tune an axe to your liking. I could have done without the red paint but the handle wasn’t lacquered, which is a definite plus. I attempted to get the aluminum wedge (not a great choice) out so I could save the pretty nice handle and re-hang the head. No dice, I had to cut the handle. Oh well, it’s still a nice axe. ... show more

  • Poorly hung and poorly made handle.
On paper, this is the perfect axe for me. For USFS saw work, I need an axe with a 3 to 5 pound head and I prefer something relatively short that I can carry in a pouch on my belt. This definitely fits the bill, unfortunately the execution left a bit to be desired. The first issue I had was that the it didn't appear to be hung strait. Further investigation indicated that the handle appeared to be poorly carved. There was a bit of a twist to it that caused the top to be about 10 degrees off from the bottom. This wasn't a huge deal as it didn't seem to significantly affect how I held it, so I let it go. I put a good edge on it and oiled up the handle, then a while later I took it out and put it to work. Unfortunately putting it to work only lasted until the second tree as the aluminum wedge came out. Definitely not a good situation to be in when you have to hike quite a ways back to the vehicle to get another axe and then out again to the work site. When I got home, the handle from the shoulder up seemed to be a bit mangled, I guess from the handful of swings I got in while the head was working itself loose. I ended up calling Council Tool to see what could be done about the situation. They offered to send me some wooden wedges to rehang the axe on the same handle. I was reluctant as I wasn't thrilled about that handle in the first place, but I agreed to try. When the wedges showed up, I rehung it only to notice a split in the handle after doing so. Because it had just been hung, I ended up having to cut and drill the handle to get the head back off. To Council Tool's credit, the head seems to be well made, which is why I'm giving this 2 stars instead of 1. Also I appreciate the responsiveness of their customer service. All of that said, I know I probably got a dud but the whole incident has left a sour taste in my mouth. I really just don't want to mess with it anymore right now and I'm outside of the return window anyway. I'm sure at some point this winter I'll stop at the lumberyard and pick up a block of hickory to make a custom handle, but for now I ordered another axe from a different manufacturer. ... show more

  • Unhappy
Not to happy with axe. Eye by wedge filled in with some type of wood filler or expox. Can't tell it's been painted. Deep gouges on axe head where they manually pound the handle in place.
