Great axe- I intend to use this on volunteer (multi-day) back country volunteer trail work (mostly logouts). It is my 2nd Council axe- my other is a heavier felling axe (annoyingly long for backpacking). I've also got a Hudson Bay style axe (another manufacturer...) that is even lighter but occasionally proves to be too light for driving wedges needed to keep crosscut saws freely cutting. I know, pretty esoteric use- but perfect for my purpose. The difference in head weight is minor but the added handle length of the (lovely) felling axe makes it awkward on my backpack. ... show more

    • Garbage- Do Not Buy!!
The grain of the handle is 100% opposite of the way it should lay. I’m severely disappointed and won’t buy an axe from Council Tool online (or perhaps ever if this meets their quality control). I have never seen a worse version and now have to buy a new handle. Even Lowe’s makes a superior handle.

    • Awesome for felling and chopping, not so much for splitting
Great felling axe, and it looks fantastic to boot! Note this also comes in the more standard 36" handle so be sure to get the length you want (32 might be right for you but just be aware which version you are purchasing). Some reviewers have praised this as a splitter too, but I cannot report the same. Sticks too often, not great for most serious splitting tasks. There are other axes in the 3.5 lbs. range that would make better "all purpose" axes like the Snow & Neally 3.5# Single Bit Axe, but this is really a cutter first and foremost. So felling, bucking, etc. Also I knocked it a star because it required a lot of sharpening out of the box (not unusual for axes at this price point unfortunately). ... show more
