This buying guide is a must for any consumer who is interested in seeing the value of a car they are considering in purchasing. It allows you to see the potential problems you could have, the years of the make of the cars that have that particular problems etc. I would not even consider buying a car without purchasing this book. You will avoid wasting your money because many disadvantages can be circumvented by checking out the make and model of your intended car to be.

I was somewhat disappointed in this publication. The cover and description of the book are a little misleading in that it gives the reader an impression that this particular book is all inclusive with respect to rating everything. But it is not. For example, I wanted to review the ratings for mattresses but discovered that there is nothing in this book covering those ratings. However, there is a four year index in the back of the book which refers the reader back to prior year CR magazine issues where there are mattress ratings. The only way I located these prior year magazine issues was to visit the local library and hope they maintained a copy. However, the book does contain a number of ratings for other equipment such as DVD players, coffeemakers, etc. So it wasn't a total waste, just a partial waste on the particular item I wanted to research.

Used this to research for a new refrigerator to replace the old one that was about to give up the ghost. Settled on a Whirlpool for reliability and length of service and prior experience. Still running great.

Here is the 2011 version of Consumer Reports' annual buying guide. What a treasure trove of information! Thinking of getting a computer? Where to go? Reader scores are highest for Amazon.com under the category Web Sites/Catalogs; Apple.com gets highest marks for Manufacturer web sites/catalogs; Apple, Costco, and Micro Center get the honors for walk-in stores. And on it goes. What about coffeemakers? Popular these days are the so-called Pod Coffeemakers. What to buy? Test results suggest that Cuisinart Cup-o-Matic is the pick of the litter. Want 12 cups at a time? Cuisinart, Kalorik, Zojiruski, Krups, and Hamilton Beach make successful coffeemakers, according to the gnomes at Consumer Reports. One of the most useful sections for me is on autos. When the time comes to make a purchase (whether used or new car), I normally carry the latest volume of this paperback with me to the dealer. Used cars, for example. I have a very old and a very new Toyota Camry. The used car quality picture is from the time frame 2004-2009. A 4-cylinder Camry from any of those years is a good bet to get as a used car. Laptop computers? Take a look at recommendations for 11-13 inch models. Top rated: Apple MacBook Pro, Apple MacBook, and the Toshiba Satellite *(a best buy at $470). 17-18 inch models? Apple MacBook Pro, HP Pavilion, Dell Inspiron, and Dell Studio 17. Flooring? A laminate? Best bets: Armstrong Coastal Living, Pergo Accolade (a best buy), and Pergo American Cottage. Anyway, another year, another Consumer Reports' annual buying guide.

You can get a year's subscription to the magazine for $19.95 at a magazines-for-sale website, and it includes the annual buying guide FREE. Why would anybody pay these inflated prices when the guide is so much cheaper with a magazine subscription? Moreover, I think I have seen this in grocery stores for much much lower than the prices quoted here. Our verdict : NOT ACCEPTABLE!
