Description

From one of the leading grief therapists, this compassionate and accessible guide to grieving offers a new framework for understanding and navigating loss. An intimate guide to grieving that offers hope and healing within loss from one of the nation’s top grief therapists. Conscious Grieving is a book for anyone seeking guidance and support after loss. Renowned grief therapist Claire Bidwell Smith combines her deeply personal experience of loss with her long career spent working with thousands of people to introduce a new approach to grief, one that promotes hope and even transformation. What does it mean to grieve consciously? Most of the time, when we lose someone we love, it feels like grief is just happening to us. We feel out of control, and overwhelmed. Claire reminds us that while loss is something that inevitably happens to all of us, how we choose to grieve is up to us. When we can consciously engage with our grief, rather than avoiding it, we can access profound pathways to healing. Presented in a series of thoughtful, brief vignettes that don’t overwhelm the reader, Conscious Grieving offers a new framework for each stage of grief: Entering, Engaging, Surrendering, and Transforming. Entering – staying present and taking care of ourselves as we navigate the shock and upheaval of a new loss. Engaging – navigating that first year after a loss by staying in tune with our needs as more complicated feelings of depression, guilt or anger surface. Surrendering – facing the changes to our identity and who we are becoming in the face of loss. Transforming – through ritual, honor, hope, and grace, and learning to carry our grief with intention so that we can continue to grow, heal, and thrive. Grief asks a lot from us. But the ability to grieve is a birthright. We grieve throughout our lifetimes. We grieve the deaths of loved ones yes, but also moves, divorce, illness, injustice, time lost, changes in the world and healing from these losses requires that we evaluate everything we ever considered meaningful. Healing means making our lives worth the pain we endure when we lose someone we love. And transforming through grief is an opportunity afforded to all. Read more

  • An easy to read and "down to earth" book that can benefit everyone.
This book is surprisingly easy to read and understand. I agree with another reviewer who suggested that we all should have this in our "tool kit". I have already given my first book away and ordered another. ( My friend was trying to help a woman dealing with the loss of a parent.) No need to push this book on someone immediately after a death but the insight and ideas in this book may gently guide you as you offer compassionate support. You will know when your friend is ready to read the book. Thank you author, publisher and Amazon prime for getting this book to me in such a timely manner. ... show more

  • Author is an experienced & comforting guide
This book is already so incredibly helpful to me and I've ordered more to give to others who are going through loss (but isn't that all of us in some form?) The author really understands every side of grief, isn't afraid to look at each angle, and clearly has years and years of experience guiding others through it. ... show more

  • a warm, gentle and transformative guide to healing
Claire brings her compassionate knowing and warm voice to each page. You will feel like you are being guided by a warm, bright and knowing friend. Claire allows for the messy and the real truth of grief, knowing it is a part of life that is not an ailment that needs fixing. Her experience of sitting with so many as a world renown therapist, brings grief in all of its realness to the page, in an easy and informative invitation to sit with it safely. It is truly like having someone hold your hand in the hard stuff. Buy one for yourself, one for everyone you know who is grieving and those who need to support a griever. As a grief coach, I have often felt that books on grief can feel prescriptive -- leaving the griever feeling as if they are "doing grief" right or wrong. This is just the opposite. Conscious Grieving is for every griever and has moved me with her insight and end of chapter introspection and lessons, beyond the page. ... show more

  • Great Tool
Great book to read before (and keep in your tool kit) and after a loss. I thought the Reflection with an action item at the end of each discussion was a nice touch. This allows the reader to stop and think about how what they just read applies to them. When you are deep in grief you don’t exactly stop and think about how it’s affecting your body, mind and other parts of your life. The studies and explanations of how it affect you emotionally and physically were very interesting as I’ve not thought of some of these before. The author even gives ideas on how to manage, warning signs to look for and how/when to seek help for how you are feeling. This book also walks you through the first year of grief and what you can expect as well as Holidays, birthdays and other special events. I thought that was helpful so that you have some idea as things happen that how you are feeling is a normal part of grief. The last part of the book is all of the Tools that may help you along your grief journey. Thank you to the Author, Publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. ... show more
