Description

Franz Liszt's transcriptions of other composers' music are as highly regarded as his original piano works. Some listeners — Schumann among them — consider Liszt's painstaking transcriptions to be completely new works. Using his gifts for fathoming the deepest meanings of a given piece, Liszt also created a uniquely revealing work. In addition to drawing attention to composers and works that would otherwise have remained unknown to a wider public, Liszt's piano transcriptions introduced the instrument to uncharted territory: for the first time, a keyboard could be used to reproduce the sound of any instrument. The composer brought numerous innovations to the practice of piano playing to achieve the richness and color of the original works, from the technique of hand crossing to revolutionary changes in the use of the pedals. First acquainted with the works of Bach through his piano studies, Liszt further explored the earlier composer's works in his career as a virtuoso performer. His piano interpretations of Bach's organ music are executed in a simple and straightforward manner, and they rapidly became the classic models for all future works in this genre. This compilation, featuring such famous and well- loved works as Six Organ Preludes and Fugues (BWV 543–548) and the Fantasy and Fugue in G minor (BWV 542), attests to their enduring power and beauty. • Very hard to fine a book with complete Bach Transcriptions . Dover has it all
Nothing to dislike. This book has it all. The best.

  • Highly recommended
Liszt being a musical genius in his own right, these transcriptions were excellently done and are for the most part quite faithful to the organ originals. Actually playing them on the piano -- while missing out of course on the pipe organ's overall power, grandeur and color -- is an excellent way to discover by actual experience the glories of the music here. I was not aware what an absolute jewel BWV 547 is, for example. Keep in mind though that these are not easy to play. There's plenty of rapid scale work, octaves, sixths and thirds...along with the occasional stretch of a tenth. I'd say these are a bit more difficult than, say, Bach's Goldberg Variations...but as with the Variations the music is so otherworldly-great that it's worth the work. I believe that with the Liszt transcriptions we might be able to get a teeny-tiny inkling of what Bach might've sounded like had he composed for the modern piano. ... show more

  • Terrific collection
This is an excellent collection. But, be aware, most of what Liszt did was to put everything into octaves, not something many players do well.

  • Beautiful
I liked this so much, I bought it for a friend of mine as well. It is true to Bach and Liszt really does a great job of keeping the grandness of the organ. Sometimes you have to reach quite a distance. These are fun and have good spirit.

  • printed to easily read and usable binding
Contains the pieces I wanted, printed to easily read and usable binding. Transcriptions just as I wanted. Great price as I payed twice as much for one selected Bach transcription. Buy it for the one you want and learn the others

  • If you love Bach and Liszt
If you love Bach and Liszt, it doesn't get better than this. Franz Liszt did a phenomenal job transcribing the pieces in this book and, to be honest, I can't figure out which one is my favorite. BWV 542 is awesome - especially the fugue. You can't go wrong with BWV 543 as the first 1/3 of the prelude is simple yet beautiful and the final portion of the fugue is heavy and intense as Bach gets. Then, you have the prelude portion of BWV 544 - which is believed to have been written for a funeral circa 1728 and represents a very mature composition with some of its passages that remind me of St. Matthew's Passion and St. John's Passion. I haven't made it any further than those 3 pieces, but I am very impressed and in love with these pieces. The only thing is these pieces aren't easy to play by any means. If you can work your way through Bach's two part inventions, this might be the next step, but the pieces in this book are among some of the hardest that I have ever mastered. I would say that they are generally easier than Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies, but more difficult than Chopin's Nocturnes and Beethoven's Sonatas. I would say they are similar in difficulty to Rachmanoff's Etude Tableux works OP 33. ... show more
