  • A Well Ventilated, Relatively Low Weight, Comfortable Hiking Boot
Size: 14 Wide Color: Kettle/Tangy Orange
I'm well seasoned hiker with more than 50 years of hiking mostly in the US SW. After hiking in boots with Vibram outsoles that are relatively stiff and heavy for several years, I decided to purchase moderately flexible outsole boot that is not waterproof and provides high ventilation capability and is relatively low weight. In the SW US the climate is relatively dry and warm for most of the year; accordingly, waterproofing is not needed for a hiking boot and high ventilation is definitely desirable. Most hiking trails in the SW US are relatively rocky for a significant part of the trail -- see image. I purchased the Columbia Benson with some trepidation because of low cost and low weight relative to mainstream hiking boots available to purchase. Well, that trepidation has vanished because since buying the Columbia Benson boot in late Jan 26, I've hiked about 45 miles in them on well maintained and rocky trails (again see image) and they have performed exceptionally well. In particular, the boot grip is outstanding on all of the trail surfaces I've hiked and they are very comfortable. I can't comment on the Benson longevity; i.e., how many miles of hiking before failing or wearing out. So, I definitely recommend them for hiking (not necessarily for backpacking with a 25+lb backpack) provided you're looking for a well ventilated, low weight boot for hiking in a relatively dry climate such as the SW US. ... show more

  • Very good, not without flaws. But breathable!
Size: 11.5 Color: Stratus/Desert Orange
Ok, I have been looking for replacement shoes/boots for a very specific use for awhile now. I do hike, but I have different shoes for that. My main outdoor hobby is disc golf, which I play pretty regularly. I live in the US South, where summers are very warm and very humid. I had a pair of Adidas shoes I got from Costco several years ago that were my main disc golf shoes for a long time until I finally tore through the sole. I replaced them with some Keen NXIS mid height Evo waterproof boots. Let me tell you. Those are the most comfortable boots I've ever worn. And it was nice when I got them in the winter to be able to walk through puddles without getting my feet wet, or step a bit into a creek even to retrieve an errant throw. But when summer hit (about March in these parts), I realized my mistake, which was not buying a second pair of the Keens with the alternative breathable build. Well, Keen doesn't make those boots anymore, or any other non-waterproof boots that I can find. So that sent me on a quest to try to find an alternative. I happened to run across a pair of these Columbia mid tops while at a store, and tried them on. They were quite comfortable, but only available in the brown color in store. I decided not to pick them up and check online for lighter colors, and I was glad I found this pair of mint in box returned grey boots. Ok, so let me get onto the review, which I'll compare these to my Keen NXIS boots and give you the pros and cons. I wear insoles, which does change how a shoe feels, and sometimes just doesn't work with some shoes. With these boots there is a little getting used to how they fit because the heel has a small amount of recessed cup shape to it. That means the shape of the insole changes a bit. I wore these around the house for a day though and it wasn't enough to cause problems. But, as far as comfort goes, these are comfortable and light, but not nearly as comfortable as the Keens. Both have a foam sole with rubber treads, but the Keen's rubber is thicker, and they feel cushier under the insole. That doesn't make these bad. They're just not the best. Speaking of the rubber, one of my favorite things about the Keens is the wrap around rubber on the toe. I have accidentally kicked and tripped on all sorts of rocks and branches in them and my toes never felt it. Also, in disc golf there can be a tendency to drag a toe sometimes, and the tip offers great wear protection. These boots don't have any of that protection, though they do have a thicker leather/suede wrap around that does offer some cushion. They also made a strange choice on how the laces tie at the top of the boot. There is a hard plastic tab for the top two spots instead of the normal shoe material. When I tried to lace them up to the top lace, that tab pressed into my ankles very uncomfortably. I had to lower them to the lower spot just to be wearable. I also have to be careful when leaving them up, as the tongue has a tendency to wedge between that tab and the shoe, also causing weird pressure. Thankfully for me, I don't need heavy ankle support, but if I did, these boots would not be usable for me. In contrast, the Keen design has a heel lock with extra padding all around the ankle and heel, with cords they've designed on the heel that make it fit tight without any pressure points. Where these excell, and the reason I'm keeping them, in spite of their flaws, is their breathability. The heat index was 108° today when I tested them with a few holes of disc golf. In my Keens when I have played this summer, my feet have been one of the first things I've felt getting warm. With these they were the last thing I thought about. Their tread is also very good for me for disc golf. They're grippy on terrain, but also allow me to pivot well on the concrete tee boxes. I'm not confident their thinner rubber will last as long as the Keens, but I do very much like how they handled on the concrete. I also had one throw that sailed on me past the basket and into some high weeds and grass. Having protective mid tops was really nice there as I wasn't worried about my ankles at all. So for my purposes, and especially due to the lack of breathable alternatives, these are really great. I paid less than $60 for them here due to being open box returns. I will say, I don't think they're worth it at full price. If Keen were still making the breathable version of the NXIS (or any version for that matter), I would gladly pay twice the price I paid for these for those. But these definitely feel like a step below in build quality and features. Again, they aren't bad. They're quite good. And as one of the very few breathable options out there, they stand out with that feature. But they do have their compromises. ... show more

  • Good street shoes. Poor hiking shoes
Size: 11 Color: Dark Brown/Spice
Not very good in sandy, desert terrain as sand goes right through the sides of the shoe. Good street shoes though.

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Great quality and very comfortable
Size: 9 Color: Kettle/Tangy Orange
I purchased these Columbia Benson Mid shoes and I’m very happy with them. They are comfortable right out of the box and didn’t require any break-in time. The ankle support is excellent and provides great stability, especially when walking on uneven surfaces. The sizing was accurate, exactly as described. The design is practical and looks good, easy to match with casual or outdoor clothing. I highly recommend these shoes if you’re looking for comfort, support, and reliability. I would definitely buy them again 👍 ... show more

Probably the most comfortable pair of hiking boots I have owned. Great for summer hikes or just wearing around town. Nice fit, with a wife toe box. Very nice quality look and materials.
