Coleman Xtreme(R) Coolers are designed with premium insulation technology that keeps contents cold on ice for days. These coolers are perfect for long trips, days spent camping or even sporting events. As an added feature, the sturdy lids are strong enough to be used as a seat up to 250 pounds. Coleman Xtreme insulation provides premium cooling performance. The 28QT cooler sits upright in the car with 2 drink holders added. Additional Premium PU InsulationUnlike other manufacturers, Coleman rigid coolers are insulated with polyurethane (PU) insulation. The PU is a very dense and excellent insulator that fills the entire internal cavity of the cooler, leaving no air gaps and thus improving its insulation efficiency. Extensive testing at Coleman have shown that the cooling loss from hard coolers is 30% through the top and also 30% through the base. The latest Coleman models feature increased insulation in these particular areas along with reduced insulation on the sides. The result of these changes is not only the improvement of cooling performance, but the reduction of external dimensions and increasing the internal volume. When a cooler comes into contact with a warm floor, heat is transferred directly from the floor to the cooler and reduces the efficiency of the chiller. ASCAUCE has included contoured feet in the design of its new rigid cooling models that separate the cooler base from the floor and increasing airflow. This airflow serves as an additional form of insulation, slowing the transfer of heat from the floor and thus improving the performance of the coolers.     • Wow, most impressive $40 cooler you can buy
We keep one of these in the house at all times next to the kitchen to use as an extension to our refrigerator. We use it for both cold and hot food storage. For cold storage you can put a couple gallon jugs of frozen water in the cooler and it will keep the temperature between 37F and 39F for several days. We use the cooler to thaw meat, party prep, seasonal cooking prep, and anytime we run out of space in the refrigerator after a trip to the grocery store, big box store, etc. For hot storage we use it for resting hot smoked meats after they have been taken off the smoker. Cleanup and disinfection is a breeze. We used three of these on a weeklong desert camping trip to an art and music festival, temps in the low to high 90s. These babies definitely keep ice for 5 days. We had one of them under our shade structure up off the playa surface with wooden blocks and the other two we kept up on wooden blocks in a covered cargo trailer. The one under our shade structure was opened and closed quite a bit because it contained our fresh food. The other two had alcoholic drinks and were opened less often because we were consuming mostly water. We bought ice on the 5th day but there was still quite a bit of ice present in the melt water. The ones in the trailer had lots of ice but they weren't opened as much. We drained the melt water to use for shower water and only charged them with ice one more time before we left the desert, and we did so just because it was relatively convenient and we wouldn't be unpacking them right away when we got home. I've had this cooler for a couple of months and hadn't used it. I thought I'd give it a test to see how it performs. I had ice in plastic lock & lock containers in the freezer, it had to come out to make room for food. I had two one gallon containers, and several smaller 12 oz containers full of ice. plus a couple of zip lock bags 12" full of ice cubes, that had been in there a couple of months. It filled just over half of the cooler, I didn't put any food or drink in there. I shut the lid and opened it five days later, which was today. The ice appeared to be melted, but it was icy cold water. I emptied the containers out into my watering can to water the plants (waste not want not!) I was surprised there was a two inch lump of ice in one of the gallon containers and a small piece in one of the small containers, and a few small pieces of ice in one of the zip lock bags. I now know that this cooler works really well, after five days all that ice water, there was over four gallons! If I'd had frozen food in there, it would have been ice cold too. I usually turn the electric off before going on vacation. Now I'll be able to turn the fridge off a few days before my trip, so I can clean it out, and I'll put the food in the cooler, so I won't be doing it at the last minute. I'm very happy with my cooler, it is a nice size. I bought the one without the wheels, because reviewers said the ones with the wheels are a bit smaller, this is just right. ... show more

    • Does the job with limitations
I have had this cooler for over a year now and it performed very well once I modified what I expected of it. Firstly let me say, it has been exposed to heat of 47C in full sunshine and it did keep food cold for a day but ice had to be replaced after 24 hours. I have no problem with that since it is not expected to perform for 5 days in those kinds of temps. When we go north in Australia in Summer 40C+ is not unusual at all and it will rarely be less than 36C. With opening and closing a cooler fairly frequently throughout the day I wouldn't expect any plastic box and ice to keep food cold for 5 days but this does work far better than I expected it would. I just change the 5kg bag of ice every 2 days and the water is still cold though no ice left in it. For a regular day on the beach it's perfect with very little ice and performs far better than a standard cooler for family picnics. However, the only real negative I found with it was how flimsy the handles were. I didn't trust them to be able to take the weight of it full of food and ice and it didn't...one handle broke at the pegs. Because there are no wheels it requires being lifted and is somewhat awkward to do this on your own because of its size and weight but with no handles it's a lot more difficult!! We will replace the handles with rope and then it will be more than adequate for our needs as long as we replace ice much more frequently than the 5 days advertised. I would buy this cooler again and probably will soon! I could not believe how fast it arrived in Australia when ordering through Amazon. ... show more

    • Great, affordable, LARGE cooler!
4.5 star average review on Amazon is better than any single professional review, and in my opinion, even word of mouth of a friend. The aggregate knowledge of Amazon review is more helpful than any other source. This cooler is big and roomy and sturdy. We needed a cooler that would fit in the back seat of our car - along with a child seat - so we could make our monthly trip to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods to stock up on food (we live over an hour away). We did not need 5 day whatever, just a solid day of driving around with hundreds of dollars of frozen food - even on a hot summer day - and this thing is exactly what we needed. ... show more
