This is the one. There are others out there, fine irons, even some that are more substantial. But the key with this one is the dimensions. The overall size perfectly crimps the bread to limit leakage. It also presses the bread slightly so that you get a proper golden brown. You still have to know what you're about around a campfire. These are analog devices and you'll burn a few pies or sandwiches until you get the hang of it. Can't blame the device for that. They are also cast iron so you need to season them and then clean them properly. Which means just wipe them out. The handles conveniently unscrew which makes seasoning easy. The lock ring is a little flimsy so you may have to fix it or replace it with your own wire. A little strip of leather works well. I'd like to see that improved but these are also pretty cheap for what they do. And you get a bunch of kids around a fire with a bunch of sweet ingredients and they have a ball. We have 8 at the cabin. And you have to clean them properly. If you don't know how to use cast iron you can mess these up. ... show more

I picked up 2 of these cookers despite all the bad reviews of people saying they were too small for the bread. Well, no duh!!! They’re supposed to crush the edges of the bread making the mountain pie. You just have to scrape off the burnt edges. Too country for ya? Then don’t buy these ya city folk!!! These are the ones ya want if you want a good mountain pie!!! Don’t buy the over priced ones and definitely don’t buy cast aluminum… They melt in really hot fires… I only needed 2 for my family of 3 and I can have enough mountain pies cooked in under 10 minutes. But if you have a small group, the price is cheap enough that buying everyone their own maker won’t break the bank!!!! Happy cooking y’all!!! ... show more

You wouldn't know it from the description, but you must re-season before use. I know it says seasoned here on amazon and on the product website,... but it is not. Everything stuck on the first use and it was pretty sad. We scrubbed and re-seasoned. Now they work fine.

Ordered 2 at the same time. One is great, excellent quality, closes tightly. Handles made well and very sturdy. The other is on the very opposite end. Very poor quality handles. Doesn't close tight not sturdy at all. The cast iron on both are exactly the same. Not bad for the price. Needs to be seasoned. For what I paid they are worth keeping and not worrying about the quality. ... show more
