I'm always shocked at how expensive step drill bits are, considering this whole set costs about a third as much as a single step bit elsewhere. I bought this set because of the night and day difference I've found when it comes to drilling steel with cobalt bits versus plain HSS. I honestly haven't been disappointed in the quality of this set as far as drilling goes, which is the most important thing by far. The bits cut quickly and cleanly and don't appear to have dulled in over a year of use. There are a few downsides, but I consider them worth it for the price. First, the size markings inscribed on the bits are of varying quality. Some are more difficult to read than others, and they don't always line up with the steps, meaning I occasionally have to count down from the top to tell which marking goes with each step. Also, the case is in no way aluminum. It's part plastic, part imitation-plastic, but with a metal latch and hinges. It's actually a very nice case in spite of the materials, just don't expect it to take a lot of abuse. ... show more

I’m in the process of installing an electric vehicle charger in my garage and had to bore a 1 1/4” hole in a 2x6 stud after trying to initially bore the hole with a 1” spade bit. When I couldn’t enlarge the 1” hole evenly to accommodate the size of the wiring, I decided to look for a step bit. I came across this step bit and decided to give it a try. This step bit solved my problem by enlarging my hole evenly-leaving me with the perfect size hole to accommodate the running of my wiring. There were only two small downsides of this step bit: one, the step bit is not a hex bit that you can just snap into your impact driver and use-it is designed to be screw tightened into you drill chuck; and two, the stem is somewhat short so I had to adjust it inside my drill’s chuck to make it longer to get completely through the stud. This worked but I was afraid the bit was going to slip out of the chuck and fall in the wall cavity. Nevertheless, I am very pleased with how the step bit performed and would definitely recommend it. ... show more

First of all, I truly believe the old saying that you get what you pay for....so take this review for what it's worth. The cost of these drill bits was very inexpensive. I don't need or use them all the time. In fact I've only used them once to drill through structural steel framing on my RV to add under chassis storage. They performed very well and cut through the steel like it was butter. I drilled 1/2" diameter holes after setting a pilot hole. I cannot vouge for the longevity or how they will hold up, but if you're a home DIY'er, these should be adequate for most projects. If I ran a shop and used these frequently, it might not be the ticket, but again for the price, these things are disposable. They come in a small metal case to hold them, which is nice for storing. I can't knock them at this time. ... show more

Nice Step bit but the depth of each step could be a little deeper. When drilling through regular plastic, relatively thin, your half way through the next step before the step you want is through material making for kind of a messy looking hole for whatever. Haven’t used enough to tell about longevity and durability. Sheet metal drilling it would probably work for clean holes. ... show more

Worked very well. I have a steel door. Very old, meaning thick plating not the cheaply newer ones you find today. I already had a dead bolt size of 1" 5/8. Old lock. So a hole saw would not work. This cut a 2" 5/8 hole like butter. Very sharp and no heat marks.
