  • Nice for the price
Made excellent soap lather, cost less than other bases, and contained no synthetic chemicals (at time of my purchase).

  • Great For Solid Use Or Serendipitous Use Not The Easiest For Layering
I have used melt and pour soap bases for quite some time. I have had all sorts of ideas with layering, marbling, and designs that have worked out pretty well. I understand how to work with these bases and I am usually pretty good at it. I am always on the look out for new bases to try without sodium lauryl sulfate in them. HOW THIS COMES This comes in two 1 lb blocks individually wrapped in plastic wrap. They are both wrapped together again in plastic wrap with a label. EASY TO CUT? This base is very easy to cut. It is quite moist and has no problem being cut into small cubes. EASY TO MELT? I had no issues melting this. In a water pan putting the soap in a glass measuring cup, it takes about 20 minutes to melt. PERFORMANCE WITH COLOR AND SCENT This soap base takes scent and color very well. I found that the mica didn't settle before the soap hardened which is a great thing. LAYERING As for layering, this is tricky to use. If you wait too little time and spray with alcohol on the surface, the 2nd layer will appear to be staying in place, but then seep through and homogenize with the other layer. If you wait too long, then the surface appears to be sticking to the next layer, but when you go to cut it, they will come apart. Other bases I have used did not give me this much issue and are not quite as tricky. It just means it has a deeper learning curve for me. HOW I REMEDIED THIS I had to heat up the layers and then stick them together once I cut the slices of soap. So far it worked and the soap is staying together again. SOAP PERFORMANCE As a soap, the olive oil soap cleans VERY well. It is not super drying, but it is not very moisturizing either. If you have very dry skin, this won't irritate it, but you will need to use lotion afterward. It still is much more gentle than traditional soaps. THE BOTTOM LINE This is a nice soap base. If you want to have a good cleaning soap and use mica or other colorants, it will show up. Using it as a whole base works perfectly. If you plan to layer or use design techniques be prepared to experiment first. MY RATING FIVE STARS. Despite the frustrations I have had with my techniques using the base, I still like it a lot. IT has no sodium lauryl sulfate in it and does not strip the skin, which is what I am looking for in a melt and pour base. I would personally tend to use this base in the summer alone or combine it with a more moisturizing base in a design. ... show more

  • Melt and Pour
Olive Oil is good as a skin softener, and is reported to have anti fungal properties. It holds both scent and color, but less well than others. Glitter is a great addition because it will sparkle all the way through when light hits it.. 2 pounds is a lot of soap .... and the specialty soaps were always more expensive. So $20 isn't too far above price point. Over the years, I have tested quite a wide range of soap products and methods of soap making. These soaps are awesome ...just the right amount of soft and easy to melt. The trick is to cut the soap into small pieces but not too small, then melt, stir, melt stir ... until it is fully melted and it will be HOT. This is when you add color, scent, sparkle. I found a good cheep method of spraying my molds with liquid oil pan spray .. pour in (and over any large item such as sea shells or toys) and then let it set for a few minutes. I had my molds on cookie sheets .. and when they were starting to firm up, I would speed up the process by putting them in the frig for 10 - 15 minutes to cool down the core. These are perfect for this process. And it is super easy to mix in different soaps in layers (don't them cool between layers) and add your own personal touches. One of my favorite tricks was to add ground coffee or ground tea, fresh flowers, and even ground oatmeal to the soap for texture, just not too much. You could also combine salt or sugar. It is so easy to experiment with this soap. And if you don't like it, just melt it again and start over. ... show more

  • Delightfully clear soap.
This would be really fun to "hide" items in the soap in plain sight, like dice or beads or coins as a stocking stuffer. The large block of soap is two blocks, individually wrapped with thin film within the thin film holding them together. They got slightly banged up in transit, but are still intact to be melted down with additions, or used as shown. Cutting it with a basic kitchen knife - think large paring knife - took the strength that it would normally use for a stubborn cheese. A heavy butcher knife would cut it like buttah. I cut it into squares and used a glass loaf pan to melt it in the microwave. Melting took about 4-5 minutes, starting in one minute increments when it was full of cold chunks and doing lesser amounts of time closer to the end. I added in a few drops of patchouli oil and stirred just before pouring. Pouring it into the pliable soap molds (and silicone baking cups) made for easy portioning. The four-six hour cool time is high for smaller bars, but I could see it being appropriate for a loaf to be cut later. The soap pops out of the molds readily, with no fuss or struggle. It works nicely for my test of washing my hands, cleansing while moisturizing. It rinses clean and leaves no noticable residue other than soft hands. ... show more
