  • Great Find of Classic Solos
I hadn't played the piano for many years since my mom passed. This book was such a great find. Whether you're a beginner or someone that just loves the classics to have sheet music like this as a gift. My mom and I used to play Ave Maria together. Her birthday is coming up and as a tribute I dusted off the keys. If you love Chopin, Mozart, Bach,Beethoven or Mendelssohn this the book for you. Another favorite is Swan Lake and Badinerie. ... show more

  • Nice Selection, But Sheet Music Presentation Lacks
I've played piano, both popular and classical, since I was a young child—so that's been decades! I always love seeing a music book, especially a piano book, pop up on a book review site. I was surprised to see that Play to Win was the publisher, as I am more familiar with this publisher in their guise of “Explore to Win” language learning books. I've thoroughly enjoyed their language learning books, having reviewed several in different languages, so I was intrigued to see what they might do with music. Unfortunately, I find myself a bit disappointed in this book. Yes, nearly every classical piece in this book will be recognizable if you've played piano for any length of time or enjoy classical music. The works are arranged in alphabetical order by the composer’s last name. As you might suspect, classical favorites like Bach and Mozart are well represented, as well as a few composers you may not recognize by name but will certainly know by the music. One composer I was surprised to see here was Scott Joplin! I've absolutely adored his works since I was a teenager, but I don't consider him a classical composer in the traditional sense of the word. Feel free to disagree with me! In this book's subtitle, the publisher proclaims you will be able to learn these classic piano solos in “less than 10 minutes a day.” Yet, in no place in the book do they actually tell you how to do that. The book has a very brief introduction, but approaches to study or how to do so in 10 minutes or less in a given day are not provided. That was the first disappointment. The subsequent disappointment came when I saw the actual musical pieces themselves. At first glance, the pages are relatively clean and easy to read (pluses), and you can tell that most have been very simplified. Simplification is perfectly fine in a book meant to help the advanced beginner bridge the gap to intermediate playing, which the publisher states is an intention. But as I looked closer at the songs, many elements typical of classical sheet music were missing. While each song has metronome markings, no indication about how the piece should be played is provided, like “Con fuoco” or “Andante.” No symbols are given within the music, like the long greater than or lesser than signs typically used for diminuendo and crescendo. The simple “dim.” and “cresc.” abbreviations are used. I'm a very visual person, and I much prefer the symbols … and only they can tell you truly where they end. While each line starts with the measure’s number, no finger numbers are given in any piece. I think that's particularly helpful for advanced beginners trying to up their classical game. This is a solid, nice set of songs for any classical music-loving piano player, but I'm not quite happy with their presentation. I don’t think these versions will help advance your musicianship. If this book had more in the way of actual instruction to help you build your piano chops in 10 minutes a day and/or the songs themselves had more of the traditional markings I expect in music, I would give this a much higher review rating. But with these faults, I do not feel like I can recommend this book when there are so many other amazing classical sheet music books out there on the market. I received a free digital copy of this music book, but that did not affect my review. ... show more
