  • Casual, Classic, Inexpensive Boot
I bought a 2nd pair of these back in 2012 in the beeswax style. I originally bought the dark brown suede a year prior to that. The 1st pair that I had didn't last as long as the 2nd pair. The suede pair broke down pretty quick and lost the nice look. I wouldn't recommend those unless you're going to wear them occasionally and not all the time. The one thing I noticed on both, was that the laces break very quickly. On every boot the laces broke. This was a pain because it was difficult to find new laces that were short enough for these boots. As you can see in the picture there are only 2 eyelets on each side, so the laces need to be on the shorter end. I couldn't find replacements even though I didn't look that thoroughly. I've been able to still wear these boots without laces for the past 6-8 months and they've been fine. The fit: These run a bit large so I would size down a half size and even a full size possibly. I usually wear a 10.5 or 11 in vans canvas shoes and I bought these in a size 10. That size fit just about right. They're not too snug, but enough room to wear a little thicker socks. With bigger socks I would describe them as snug. A lot of places carry these now so just drop in a store and try them on for best fit. The Wear: At first your heals/ankle/achilles will be a bit raw, so take it easy to start. This happened on my first pair. My idiocy decided to walk home from the store wearing them and my heals had huge blisters by the time I got home from the mile or so walk. On my 2nd pair (beeswax) I would casually wear these around the house slowly breaking in the leather around my ankles. Once that leather breaks in and creased, you'll be able to walk long distances in these. On the inside of the boots there is a little leather strip where your heal and arch sit. It'll mold to your foot over time too. It also helps with comfort a little bit. These aren't the most comfortable fit, but the more you wear them you get used to it. Some people would probably like some kind of insole. The Look: The look of these are timeless. I've had many people compliment me on these simple boots. The beeswax color is an orangish light brown when you first get them. Personally I didn't care for that color, so I bought some dark brown leather dye that I applied 2 coats to. Once they broke in the dark dye added a new dimension to them as the creases remained the dark brown and the material above the creases came back closer to the original color. This gave them a fantastic aged look. I would redye these every couple of months and the depth in color got better and better. They're pretty old now, so I haven't applied any dye for at least 8-10 months. The crepe is a cream type color. It was too bright for my taste, so I used a black conti crayon to darken it up a bit. It helped blend the soles with the dark brown dye on the beeswax leather. Over time I assume dirt would turn the crepe a similar color, I just didn't want to wait. Weather Conditions: These boots are called "Desert Boots" for a reason. They do not handle water well at all. The crepe sole is basically smooth, so any slightly slippery surface will turn these into skates. The crepe also absorbs water at an insane pace. These are not ideal for rainy climates. These also do not hold up well in the snowy winter months. As I stated before they are very slick on ice/slush/snow. I have come close to falling down so many times in just 1 month this winter. Any time I walk through any type of snow my feet get soaked. First from snow falling in from the top of the boot because they're not very tall. They're just about even with your ankle. Second from the edges where the sole connects to the leather body of the shoe. I also get water seeping in through the bottom of the shoe. It seems as though they'er little sponges connected to leather. That might be an overstatment, but there is a little water that will come from underneath if you're standing in water for long enough. Lastly, these are not very thick at all, so they will not keep your feet very warm. I've tried wearing bigger socks and it still doesn't help too much. I live in Chicago and I ride my bike year round. I'm able to cover up enough to ride in 10 degree weather and probably lower, but I refuse to because my feet get too cold. 15 degrees is my cutoff point. Overall I definitely recommend these. They look great, feel pretty good, and they are pretty affordable. ... show more

  • Clarks Desert Boots compared
So, this may be a long winded review but I hope it helps those who are thinking of buying the Desert Boots, and which ones to choose. My introduction to Clarks was a few months ago when I walked into one of their outlet stores, tried on their Bushacres, and immediately bought a pair. However, the Bushacre boots (for those looking to buy them), within a week of wearing them, started to come undone in the sole area where they are glued together. They also had one of the hardest soles I'd ever walked on, so it wasn't at all comfortable. I returned them and then looked for a pair of the original Desert Boots in Beeswax, which I ended up getting from a local retailer. The Beeswax desert boots took well over a week to break in, and I'm still kind of breaking them in. The process has been rather painful, much as everyone described, but they are becoming very comfortable, since I added an old insole and even a heel liner where it was rubbing up against my heel. The crepe sole on the Beeswax is rigid and tough, not the most comfortable without an insole. After wearing them for a whole day, the bottom of my feet would be pretty sore. A note on sizing, all these pairs came a half size smaller than my usual US size, but when looking at a size chart, I noticed that the US size actually matched up with my European size. So, in a way, they are true to size for me in European sizes but not American sizes. I have slightly wide feet, so sizing down even more would've been too narrow for my toes. The Beeswax pair has stretched out somewhat in the toe box area and my usual toe problems have not appeared. Lengthwise, they've stretched out ever so slightly but that's made them more comfortable. Now, on to the pair that I bought from Amazon and for which I'm writing this review. I bought the Brown suede boots when Amazon was having a sale and I managed to get them for under $60, which is a steal. I got the boots with free shipping and it took less than a week to receive them. For the Beeswax boots, I paid double in store. In any case, the brown suede boots are entirely more comfortable than the Beeswax and the Bushacre. The suede is high quality, supple, and not rigid at all. The crepe sole, surprisingly, is bouncier and more comfortable than on my Beeswax boots. I don't plan on putting an insole in the brown suede boots like I have in the Beeswax. Sizing wise, the brown suede fits better than the beeswax and is more accommodating for my wide toe box (same size as the Beeswax pair, 8.5). No heel rubbing or any of the other problems associated with the beeswax pair. In terms of looks, I think the brown suede are certainly sleeker looking and pretty low profile. I like the dark sole on them and feel that I can wear them with business casual attire, unlike the two-tone beeswax pair, which I wear only with jeans and sometimes khakis/chinos. I've tried wearing them with thick socks and it hasn't worked for me, because they become too small then. Regular socks work best for me with the Beeswax and the suede. Overall, very pleased with the purchase and happy to have bought them for such a low price. They do have a very slight, almost unnoticeable imperfection in the crepe sole, but I think that comes with the way the sole is made. No reason to return the pair. I would recommend the suede version over the beeswax, for those with slightly wider feet and for those who don't want to go through the somewhat painful breaking-in period of the Beeswax. I am glad that I have both, however. One star off for the fact that I've had to accommodate the Beeswax with an insole and heel liner, and the brown suede with a heel liner on one foot to keep it from flopping too much. Amazon service gets the five stars, however. ... show more
