Excellent title, good physical release

I’m sure you’ve already heard how amazing this game is, but I was personally a little skeptical because of how much praise it was getting. Turns out that all of it justified, I’m 15 hours in and I can’t put it down. The environments are gorgeous, the story immediately pulls you in with these compelling characters that are facing very difficult circumstances and trying to overcome them. Set in a world where there is this giant obelisk in the distance with a number on it (34 at the start of the game), no one older than that number is alive and everyone who is younger will not survive living past that age. There is this entity called “The Paintress” who draws a new number on the obelisk annually, counting downwards from 100 originally. 67 years have past since then, so the life expectancy of every human is being reduced annually by one year. The main characters set out on an expedition to leave the safety of their city in an attempt to change their fate, they are Expedition 33. They’re essentially putting themselves in danger in the hopes of changing everyone’s fate for the better. I have been wanting a physical copy of this game since spring but they were very hard to come by until the last few months. I’m really glad that Amazon got a special edition version with a unique Steel Book. I had to pick it up when I saw that it was available. The standard edition still routinely goes on back order, even now. What you get in the box is the physical copy, three art cards, the Steel Book, and the regular physical case for the game. There are 10 total art cards, I wish I would’ve gotten Maelle or Lune but it’s randomized as to which of the 3 you will receive (but you won’t get any duplicates). The disc has all of the game on it, you can’t take this for granted anymore with physical copies of games on PS5 or especially Switch 2.

I fell in love with this game. Returning to proper turn based combat was refreshing and the semi open world is beautiful. The music is amazing and the devs really put alot of effort and love into this game. I did struggle with the parrying mechanic, but that’s just me needing to get good. The story had alot of twists, tension, comedy and the characters had actual depth and growth.

What a game!! I’m sure this game doesn’t need this review but I must say, probably one of the most extraordinary games I have seen. The graphics and the storyline are original and fantastical! A feast for the eyes and a treat for the imagination. I wish I could give this game more than 5 stars because it deserves it!

Great RPG with cool story

If you like RPG's, you might like this game. I misunderstood the name of the antagonist and I believe that misunderstanding made me like the game more because the story took on a different meaning than the direction I thought it was heading in. For me, the story is what makes this game good.

Fun Experience

I was hesitant to go with this game being a turn based game. However, after months of mostly positive reviews, I decided to purchase it. I wasn’t looking to purchase this edition but the standard was sold out everywhere or shipping was going to take forever. For $10 more, this was just a few days. I am glad I did it. While not a perfect game, it has been quite enjoyable. I figure a 8.5/10. Combat is smooth, graphics are good (I use performance mode). The story and characters are well done as well as the music. This is a very dodge/parry heavy game. Parry preferred because of the powerful counters you can deliver. While I am not the best at timing parries in any game, I have been decent at this one. I am not beating bosses first attempt or overpowered so I am having to lose a few times to learn attacks and timing. While there is an easier setting, I don’t think it helped at all with parrying so I play on Expeditioner setting. I do feel all the cosmetics are pointless but if you want to platinum the game, my understanding is you have to get them all. Overall, this game is a fun experience and I recommend it.

Game of the Decade - An unforgettable masterpiece

It just recently won the most awards in history at The Game Awards. It deserved all the accolades. To me Expedition 33 isnt game of the year, it's the game of the decade. I've been playing games my whole life, and I've always been a huge RPG fan. Final Fantasy 7 put me in that path, and to date I've played dozens of RPGs. But as I got older, the magic kind of died off. Even with games that got great critical reviews, even if I personally felt they were objectively good like Metaphor Refantazio, I just couldn't help but feel like something was missing. That sense of wonder, the feeling that you're actually in a new world experiencing it for the first time. I chalked it off to just getting older. Of course at my age I wouldn't feel those things anymore right? And that's the real magic of Expedition 33. Yeah the combats great. Yes the music and story are amazing. Yes the visuals feel like pure art. But all of those pale in comparison to Expedition 33s greatest accomplishment. It let me feel that childhood wonder once again. The wonder I haven't felt in years with any videogame. And if you're like me, and you've bought dozens of games only to never beat them even though there wasn't anything objectively "wrong" with them, you owe it to yourself to give this one a shot. You may just feel like a kid again.
