  • Unwrapping the Mystery of Christmas Presents
Format: Hardcover
Lisa Unger’s Christmas Presents is a great read for the holiday season. The novella is a thrilling mystery with a picturesque, cozy setting that is great the holidays. Madeline Martin, the young owner of a thriving bookstore, has built herself a life despite her tragic past. Everything seems fine until Harley Granger, a failed novelist turned true crime podcaster, enters her shop and starts digging up her painful past. Madeline is the only surviving victim of Evan Handy, who was convicted for the murder of her best friend. Granger, meanwhile, is interested in the case since three other young women have gone missing since Handy went to jail, including Lolly. Madeline and her childhood friend Badger team up to trace Lolly’s whereabouts and uncover the truth that was closer to home than they thought. Christmas PresentsLisa Unger has executed an intriguing plot that keeps the readers hooked from start to finish. Her contrasting tones between the cozy and picturesque setting of the story and the dark, unsettling murder mystery provides an excellent balance. Unger does an excellent job of building tension, leaving shocking revelations throughout the story to keep the readers engaged. The book’s characters are realistically crafted, with their sketches etched with strong emotions and backstories that provide depth. Madeline’s character is meticulously detailed, with her tragic and painful past. Her personality is mild and gentle, but her perseverance and determination to uncover the truth are commendable. Unger does an excellent job of creating rich and genuine characters that captivate the reader. However, the book falls a tad bit short when it comes to the ending. The book ends too conveniently, and the lack of a more profound conclusion makes it seem incomplete, especially after a well-crafted plot and beautifully etched characters. Christmas Presents is a great holiday mystery read that captures the essence of the season while providing a tense thriller to keep readers engaged. The book’s picturesque setting and its well-crafted characters make it enjoyable, and the book’s genre provides the perfect atmosphere for the season. Although the book has its flaws, it is perfect for those who want to enjoy a light read during the holidays. ... show more

  • A fun Christmas thriller!
Format: Hardcover
Madeline has built a life for herself as the owner of a thriving bookshop despite her tragic childhood and needing to care for her infirm father. When Harley, a failed novelist turned true crime podcaster, drifts into her shop, he seems intent on digging up events that Madeline would much rather forget. She's the only surviving victim of Evan Handy, the man convicted of murdering her best friend. Since Evan went to jail, three other young women have gone missing, the latest being Lolly. Are they connected? As Christmas approaches, Madeline and her childhood friend Badger return to the past, discovering that the truth is much closer to home than they think. CHRISTMAS PRESENTS is an exceptionally crafted Christmas thriller about Madeline's escape from a killer and the past that comes back to haunt her. Considering the horrifying ordeal that left her almost dead, Madeline has made a life for herself as a bookshop owner. Off the bat, I respected Madeline's strength in moving on, especially when the love for books is involved! I instantly felt connected to Madeline and quickly sympathized when Harley, the popular true crime podcaster, came around to reopen the investigation. Madeline not only lost her best friend, but her two other close friends were missing, a wound with no closure. With a recently missing person, Harley decides to pick at it. Little did he know his actions would open Pandora's box and rock Madeline's world again. Unger's narrative was written with multiple POVs, transitioning effortlessly and establishing her talented, seasoned authorship. I had so much fun peeling back the layers and learning more about what Madeline went through. Although I cracked the case early on and wasn't startled by the reveal, it didn't detract from the mystery. Unger's storytelling, as a whole, didn't disappoint, especially how she blended the cozy Christmas season into one murderous plot. I positively recommend CHRISTMAS PRESENTS; it's a thrilling gift that keeps on giving! ... show more

‘23 - 3 STARS DESCRIPTION : Madeline Martin has built a life for herself as the young owner of a thriving business, The Next Chapter Bookshop, despite her tragic childhood and now needing to care for her infirm father. When Harley Granger, a failed novelist turned true crime podcaster, drifts into her shop in the days before Christmas, he seems intent on digging up events that Madeline would much rather forget. She’s the only surviving victim of Evan Handy, the man who was convicted of murdering her best friend Steph, and is suspected in the disappearance of two sisters, also good friends of Madeline’s, who have been missing for nearly a decade. It’s an investigation that has obsessed her father Sheriff James Martin right up until his stroke took his faculties. Since Evan Handy went to jail, three other young women have gone missing, most recently a young college dropout named Lolly. Are they connected? Was Evan Handy innocent after all? Or was there some else there that night? Someone who is still satisfying his dark appetites? REVIEW : First 7 books by this author for me were pretty consistent (4/5 stars) thru 2017. Then something changed. ‘18 & ‘19 were 2 stars, ‘20 was 4 Stars and then ‘21 was 3 stars. I decided to skip ‘22 (SECLUDED CABIN SLEEPS 6) because reviews were all over the place and many negative reviews were saying too many characters & storylines. Last Girl Ghosted (‘21 - 3 Stars), Confessions on the 7:45 (‘20 - 4 Stars), The Stranger Inside (‘19 - 2 Stars), Under My Skin (‘18 - 2 Stars), The Red Hunter (‘17 - 4 Stars), Darkness My Old Friend (‘11 - Bk 2of5 Jones Cooper - Read ‘16 - 4 Stars), Ink and Bone (‘16 - Bk 5of5 Jones Cooper - 4 Stars), Fragile (‘10 BK 1of5 Jones Cooper - Read ‘15 - 4 Stars), Crazy Love You (‘15 - Bk 4of5 Jones Cooper - 5 Stars), In The Blood (‘14 - Bk 3of5 Jones Cooper - 5 Stars) and Beautiful Lies (‘06 - Read ‘14 - 4 Stars). Earned Double Kindle Reward Points with this purchase. A solid mystery that kept my interest the whole way. No surprises or thrills but kept me entertained. ... show more

  • Short Suspenseful Christmas Time Thriller
Format: Kindle
CHRISTMAS PRESENTS by Lisa Unger is a suspenseful thriller set a week before Christmas featuring the survivor of an attack from a sexual predator who killed one friend and is thought to be responsible for the disappearance of two sisters, also her friends, all on the same night. Now ten years later, she is having to relive that time in her life when a famous true-crime author and podcaster comes to town and is investigating the case. This story is a little longer than a normal novella, but shorter than a full-length novel. This thriller is told by Maddie in the present and is interspersed with chapters that are memories from the past and then there are also chapters told by Harley as he tries to dig up new facts about the old case and the missing girls. There are plenty of plot twists that continually had me changing my mind about guilt and/or innocence of the suspects. Ms. Unger handled Maggie’s trauma and survivor’s guilt even these ten years later with empathy that made it feel believable. Overall, I was satisfied with the conclusion of the missing girls’ case, but unless I missed something somewhere, I do not understand who shot two characters at the end of the story. Other than that, I enjoyed this fast-paced thriller. This is an engaging and suspenseful Christmas time short thriller. ... show more

  • Perfect thriller for Christmas season! Full of holiday vibes and suspense!
Format: Hardcover
Absolutely loved this! Wasn’t shocked to figure out “who” it was, but not disappointed by any means! Perfect thriller that was just what I was looking for during holiday season! Also thought I’d be disappointed by a “novella”, but this was a great read and not very short really! Read it by the coziness of the Christmas tree and lights for full effect 🎅 ... show more

  • Mystery for Christmas?
Format: Kindle
Lisa Unger knows how to keep her readers enthralled until the very end. A mix of mystery and thriller Christmas presents is a great book to settle in for a night of reading. I had it figured out early on, or at least I thought I did, but Lisa proved that she could pull out a twist or two. I love books that have a podcast plot line. The investigation that takes place brings a whole new level of interest to the reading. I'm looking for missing women, uncovering what happened a decade ago, and a murder. All of this has haunted Maddie and her family and friends for a decade. Until Harley Granger brings his podcast to Little Valley. Old wounds open up, and the truth finally comes out. High recommend!! ... show more

  • Hooked on Lisa Unger!
Format: Audiobook
This author has me in a chokehold; I cannot get enough of her stories! I read A LOT so that is very unusual, and I am not normally a mystery/thriller girlie. I bought a short story with an Audible credit and I was hooked

  • FLUFF -
Format: Hardcover
I really wanted to like this book as her other publications have been interesting. This one is best described as FLUFF. If you want to read a mystery with under developed characters and a story line that is not well developed this is for you. If you want a "mystery" that has happy endings for everyone, by all means this is the book for you. Personally I find the Hallmark Christmas series on TV to have more mystery/drama and plot lines. ... show more
